Telnet and ftp are very unsafe :). They send passwords in the clear.
Get ssh ( http://www.openssh.com ). This is a much more secure way of
doing remote administration.

Be just as concerned about a normal user password too. If some
malicious person gets a shell on your system, then local exploits are
possible too.

You could put your user in the same group as root (dangerous).

Hmmm, read about tcp_wrappers, put the name in /etc/hosts.allow
And deny all from hosts.deny.
