If  u are game try hdparm -X68 /dev/hda. Thatr should put it in udma 66 mode. 

In any case, if it has not made a diff (and hopefully i can corroborate 
'morrow) , i think we should accept that hdparm is prbly broken with 
i810+kernel 2.4 and try bonnie to get the hdd results.
