Even after doing the above change no increase in throughput :-)

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffer-cache reads:   128 MB in  1.83 seconds = 69.95 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads:  64 MB in 13.89 seconds =  4.61 MB/sec
