I fully agree with you. I really like exim+fetchmail+mutt+vim
combination. (It is another matter that my friend thinks otherwise)

Yes, I found this program. Its TODO list still talks about 
including an SMTP module "if there is enough demand for it".
I think there will never be a demand for the SMTP module.

After all this search, I think pine comes closest to what my
friend wants. Maybe Pine will support SMTP AUTH soon (as Suresh
Ramasubramanian said ). Till then I think he (my friend) will 
have to fetch the mails before sending (he is also on softhome
and it supports POP before SMTP.)

By the way, while searching for the "All Purpose console Mail
Program", I found a program called sendEmail (a nice Perl script
with enough documentation within the program itself to help me
start learning a bit of Perl.)
When I learn enough Python programming, I hope to write a simple
MUA and interface it with `sendEmail' (after translating it to Python).
Anyway, that's my TODO list :-)
