Moreover once I log out the display goes altogether and I have to reboot the machine.
i think this was the problem in earlier versions of xfree (<= 4.2) but should have been resolved in 4.3 (i successfully used 4.2.99cvs without this problem).
try increasing the Frame-Buffer memory to 8 MB in the BIOS and see if it makes a difference
