can do about the desktops but are initiating the replacement of MS Office with Openoffice and searching for a replacement of Outlook. BUt this would take time and right now they have asked me to do the best to stop/filter viruses at the proxy. So could you suggest something keeping the current scenario into consideration.
Initially, firewall off the windows messenger / file sharing type services (135-139 netbios ports for example) from the internet.
Make sure there are no open shares, and that critical data is kept in a linux fileserver running samba, that is regularly swept for viruses (clamav can do this for you) - stuff can be backed up etc there.
Have some policies that prevent employees from installing random junk that they download off the internet (bonzibuddy, spyware, cute "screensavers" they receive in email, etc) - both OS level and HR acceptable use policies.
Back it up with stuff like "if your computer is infected, we will just reinstall it from an approved image". Data? Email? Both are on the central fileserver and mailserver, regularly backed up / imap stores for email etc. Your cute wallpapers, downloads, mp3s etc? Sorry, they're gone.
Worked rather well for me when I was a corporate admin.
