Define 'will not work'.
I'm going to make a guess here, either:
a) You don't have the #! as the very first two bytes.
(It is very important that there is nothing before
it)
or
b) You aren't calling the program correctly. Remember,
in Redhat (and most good distributions), the current
directory is not in your path. This means you have
to call the file like ./myfile.
or
c) Your script isn't marked as executable. chmod 755
the script and give it a try again.

you also probably want to check out the autoconf package - it can be a
godsend for setting up packages to compile on multiple platforms. find it

As far as I know (Slashdot, GGI mailing list, various other net sources),
the XFree86 team have not committed to a firm date, but are hinting at a
late summer/early fall timeframe.

What hardware do you have now? It is already possible to run multi-head
with certain cards under the currently existing XFree86. You will not have
a unified desktop across the two screens (I've not heard if 4.0 will even
have that), but you will have traditional multi-head support. I believe
that the Matrox Millenium I and II series cards had good support for this,
and they are now quite reasonable in price.
Another alternative if you're up to installing bleeding edge software would
be to try out the soon to be released new GGI beta with something like
XF86_FBDev or X-GGI.
Good luck,
Scott

Subject: Passwd locking ?

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I've got this problem with the passwd file.
Whenever I try to add a new user to the system, I get an error, saying
that the passwd file is locked, and that I should try again later. I do
try again later, but it always gives me the same error.
So, whenever I need to add a new user, I first manually delete the
.pwd.lock file in the /etc directory. Then it works.
So, it seems that the "adduser" program locks the passwd file, but
doesn't unlock it.
Does anyone know why ?
I've inherited looking after a Redhat5.1 machine, with the stock
standard kernels and utils that come with it. I'm running squid, and
using the machine as a mail server (POP and SMTP) for about 20 PCs on a
local ethernet. The "standard" daemons are running. The only
difference is that it appears to be running an ftp proxy on port 21, and
standard ftp services on port 36.
Thanks.

Linux is compatible with the later versions of ez-bios. My version of
ez-bios is 9.09W and it is compatible. It came with the 6.4GB WD Caviar
that I have running on this machine right now. I've never run Win98 but
I know it will work with Win95.

Hi,
Is there any HP 870cxi printer user, that could send-me
his /etc/printcap and filter (file pointed to by 'if' in /etc/printcap).
I am using this printer and have ghoscript installed with cdj850 driver,
but it prints very slow. Since the driver cdj850 is for the correct one
for this printer, I think that the problem might be due to a bad filter used.
Could any HP 870cxi user send me please its filter ??
Thanks in advance for your help,

If you can get the old jpeg6 routines, you can do this in two steps.
I say the "old" jpeg6 routines because the latest versions don't
seem to support GIF any longer.
You should be able to go to ftp.cdrom.com and look under /pub/linux
for the Slackware 3.4 distribution. Somewhere under there should
be a jpeg.tgz tarball.
Once you have that, you can use the cjpeg program to convert the
BMP file to JPG:
cjpeg file.bmp > file.jpg
You can then use djpeg to convert the JPG file to GIF:
djpeg -gif file.jpg > file.gif
Hope this helps.

I disagree. Numerous Netscape versions have crashed repeatedly on my linux
box, which is a standard configuration with no questionable settings and
plenty of available hardware resources. I have heard the same complaints from
a number of people.
Netscape's v. 4x browsers are generally less stable than v. 3x, on every
platform, from my experience.

other days you get the ultraviolet page.

Perhaps you could replace RCS with CVS. CVS has a central repository and
remote access features to it included and I think that the philosophy of
allowing concurrent access and resolving conflicts only after they
really have occurred is superior to RCS=B4 strict synchronizing.

Yes, but you don't have to (nor do you have to use Enlightenment

It does provide some functionality that you may or may not find

I take it RedHat is more secure than slackware. Please tell me what needs

This is good advice, or else all the backed up data will intrude on the

Tried it, this doesn't work.
I recall discussions on Usenet or mailing lists about lib dependencies
not being resolved. It's a somewhat obscure bug. IIRC it's RH 5.x or
RH 5.2 related.
So it remains:
- My library search path includes the libs WP fails to link
- ldd says they aren't found
- The RPM providing the libs is installed (is it current?)
- The RPM providing the libs validates
Ideas?
