Hi,

Has anyone had any luck in compiling kicq-2.0.0b1 on a SuSE-7.0 Pro Distro
Linux? It has been a nightmare for me to compile such beast. For now, I
will have to play with kicq-1.0.0 until someone can lend his/her hand to
help me out.

TIA.

What I would try is getting the gdm rpm already installed; on my
RH7 box this is:

$ rpm -qv gdm
gdm-2.0beta2-37

and as root reinstall it:

# rpm -Uvh --replacepkgs blah-blah.rpm

How do I make a nfs server redundant?
Example:
Say I have 5 web servers and 1 nfs server.
The 5 webservers are all nfs mounted on to the
nfs server because they need to share html
pages.
The single point of failure here is the nfs server. How do
I make it (nfs server) redundant?

Erk. Lose-modems strikes USB, that's bad news.

FWIW, mine's a (graphite) MacSurfer USB v90 modem (says `Swann' on the
front). Tom, anything else you need to know about it, sing out by all
means.

Can anyone recommend a GUI mail client that will allow multiple IMAP
accounts that use the same server name? I have been using StarOffice 5.2=

but I'm getting tired of always having to synchronize the inboxes. Also,=

StarOffice does not seem to remove deleted mail from the server when

the same.

I tried to install a couple of packages, one of them is jdk1.3 and the
other is firestarter (firewall) and in both cases I get errors of files
missing. For java:
mydir/appletviewer:/usr/bin/head: No such file or directory
mydir/appletviewer:/usr/bin/cut: No such file or directory
mydir/native_threads/appletviewer:error in loading shared libraries:
libjvm.so: cannot open shared object file: no such file or directory

for firestarter:
gtk+ >= 1.2.1 is needed by firestarter-0.5.1-1
gnome-libs >= 1.0.0 is needed by fire..
ipchains >= 1.3.9 is needed by fire...
...
..
libSM.so.6
...
..

Where can I find those? It seems i'm missing this gtk application, but
what about the rest and where can i find them?

Thanks

Subject: Windows 98 dialing to RH Linux ppp help!
Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2001 23:09:37 GMT

My problem I'm sure has been solved a zillion times but I'm really stuck
and in a time crunch - I need to get a windows 98 box to open a dial-up
PPP link to a redhat 6.2 linux box running pppd.

I have successfully worked out two likely pre-requisites:

WINDOWS 98 HYPERTERM GETS A SHELL LOG-IN SUCCESSFULLY ON LINUX BOX.
TRUMPET 3 WINDOWS 3.1 DIALER CONNECTS PPP SUCCESSFULLY ON LINUX BOX.

However, now that I have those two tests done, I need to get the Windows
98 box (which will be the production environment) to dial to the linux
box, and the Windows 98 dialer won't complete the log-in sequence.

I have not set up PAP or CHAP - there is no default routing planned in
the linux box, no expected security issue, etc. The two machines each
have a fixed IP address (which worked OK with Trumpet 3/Windows 3.1)
which are the only options issued to pppd. Based on perusing the
archives of these USENET groups it seems likely I'll need to grapple
with this, so what I'm looking for is a simple cookbook advice that
would achieve this particular end.

Any advice/examples would be so much appreciated!

Tnx,

Dave

Subject: Bad sizing behavior with sawfish/Netscape 6
Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2001 23:22:31 GMT

System: Slackware 7.1, sawfish window manager, netscape 6.0

The sizing hints in netscape 6 don't work well with sawfish. The
dialogs netscape pops up are the same class name as the browser
window, so sawfish makes them the same size. Say, you bring up
the "find in page" dialog, it comes up the same size as the browser
window. If you size it down, the next browser window comes up
small. Netscape 4.* gives the dialogs a differant class name, so
this isn't a problem.

The question is, is it possible to just turn off the sizing hints
for a given class name? It's a nice feature for most applications,
but almost makes netscape 6 unusable.

You might try the Gnome configuration tool.
Should be in the bottom panel.
This has a section just for pilot/cal/card configuration.

These are gccs with added pentium/athlon support. They seem to work for

Good luck!

Can you please advise where you get such good deals on RAM;

I am mostly interested in a version that is fast, stable and w/out

I have a complete set of unix manuals from ATT, but not sure how much

Subject: RPM 3.0 -> 4.0 foxhole
Date: Thu, 11 Jan 2001 00:31:52 GMT

Hello,
I wanted to upgrade RPM to RPM 4.0 because i was getting the now
infamous "only packages with major nos <= 3 are supported by this
version of RPM" error. So i carefully removed the rpm package manager
and all programs with associations with it and tried to install rpm-4.0
tar.gz in /usr/local/bin where it lived before. The ./autogen command
complained i needed libtool-1.3.5, autoconf-2.13 and automake-1.4 (which
i did have but earlier versions). I downloaded the gzipped tape archives
of those files, of which autoconf and automake installed but not
libtool. libtool during ./configure says:

checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no
configure: error: no acceptable cc found in $PATH

I changed the path in .bash_profile so it would find the compiler:
export PATH=$PATH:/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i386-redhat-linux/egcs-2.91.6 and it
still didn't work. Doesn't seem to matter anyway, because in frustration
i tried to install rpm 4.0 anyway without libtool and it doesn't
acknowlege the upgraded versions of autoconf or automake. With all this
in mind, how do i accomplish installing rpm 4.0?
Many, many thanks in advance.

Just nevermind. I'm getting different answers from each person and I'm
tired of messing with it. Obviously this isn't like Windows, even though
I wish it was as I have no problem logging inot my ISP using WIndows. I
dont have to worry about version numbers or my pap secrets file being
just right or making sure i got the debug option turned on for pppd and
making sure my script file is ok. I dont have to worry about any of
that with Windows.

i'll just do it by myself.

this seems to bee a very old package. i like the depth of analysis in
the docu as well as the concept, but on our system the script
complained not to find some old program versions (libc.so.4).
Maybe i'd be able to work through these problems, but i seems that this
package is discontinued for 'tob', and even tob is 'discontinued',
see 'http://www.fgf.de/doc/packages/afio/SCRIPTS'.
So my question is, where can i find an actual version of such a
package, or is backup 'out' and 'uncool'?

continue seeking, help would be nice,

Scientific theories, according to Sir Karl Popper, can be "falsified," or

Unscientific theories -Marxist dialectical history and Freudian psychology
