In fact, I have 19 copies in a "quarantined" folder, all from "internal"

one of the first to be upgraded to the new "corporate" e-mail server, so

I missed the beginning of the thread, so forgive me if any of this is
redundant. Netscape likes to grab the X server it is attached to (X
permits this unconditionally, unfortunately), and when Netscape barfs,
it can sometimes lock the X server completely. If you're not able to
get out of it by switching virtual consoles, then perhaps you can log
on from another machine on your network (if you are on a network, that
is), and manually kill the X server.
Perhaps there are better solutions than this, too, but it sure beats
rebooting.

Jay,
All you need to do is change the order of installation. Install the libraries
first (don't try to install kde from the top folder, select each unit
seperately via the package manager in your control panel. Then, if there is a
conflict, all you need to do is load the asked for package first.

anyone give me general rules, hints or any kind of information at all

I use an ensoniq pci card in my old 233mmx box. The card sounds fine, BUT when it was
first installed, it shared an irq. The irq sharing really diminished the sound
quality and in quake II it was unusable. My new box has an sblive which sounds
awesome (I don't run Linux on the new box, yet).

They can both run. I beleve that the X-enabled emacs is just a larger
package which can run under xwindows if you are in xwindows. If you use
it from a console or a telnet session it should work in standard mode.

Greetings,
Has anyone ever seen this problem before? I've tried gimp
1.0[234]/1.1.4, and the same thing occurs each time.
mikeh@goober:(/root)% gimp --verbose --console-messages --debug-handlers
parsing "/root/.gimp/gtkrc"
parsing "/usr/local/share/gimp/gimprc"
parsing "/root/.gimp/gimprc"
parsing "/root/.gimp/pluginrc"
gimp_process: Invalid argument
Starting extensions: extension_script_fu
I'm speaking specifically of "gimp_process: Invalid argument". Once the
gimp loads, everything but script-fu seems to work fine. I can bring up
the script-fu console and or server, but no scripts are listed in any of
the "Script-Fu" submenus, and they are most certainly installed.
I've spent plenty of frustrating hours trying to figure this one out,
and
have come up blank, so here I am :)

FSF Emacs behaves the same way. You can also use the '-nw' switch to
both GNU and XEmacs to force a "console-mode" startup, which is useful
e.g. in an xterm.
(To respond to another post: yes, in fact, XEmacs can meaningfully be
used only on the Linux console.)

Ouch.... Well, Midnight Commander 'mc' has an undelete function for ext2

Try to not write any new data onto the disk, which might overwrite your lost

Aah. I had this problem too. You have a KDE compiled for Mandrake systems.
There is a package (look for it in the mandrake distributions).. All it does
is
install a simple text file. Once you install it, you'll be able to install
KDE. You might be able to do a --force instead.

Yes, you have to create that folder. An easy way to do this is to
create one under /etc/skel . Then every new user will have public_html

Read the Encryption.txt in the textdocs directory. It will tell you everything
you need to know. NT and 98 use encrypted passwords by default. Also, upgrade to
the latest version of SAMBA if you have not done so already.
Also, once you get everything setup don't for get to enable your users:

Hack the source. :)
There's a 'esd_autostandby_secs' variable in esd.c for how long it
should hold the socket open after each play. You can set it on the
command line. Unfortunately, when gnome starts it up, it doesn't
specify a time out, and if you cheat and force it to start yourself, it
won't go away when you log out. A quick hack to the code (as in change
the default timeout to be 3 seconds) and a recompile makes it work
really nicely.

Subject: Error when booting; bad magic number in super-block; please help!
Date: Wed, 07 Apr 1999 12:11:46 -0400
I am new to the Linux world and am having lots of fun learning how to
use it.
I ran into a problem yesterday. Upon booting, Linux reports:
**********************************************
[/sbin/fsck.ext2] fsck.ext2 -a /dev/hdb
hdb:hdb4
fsck.ext2: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/hdb
/dev/hdb:
The super-block could not be read or does not describe a correct
ext2 filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
filesystem(and not swap or ufs or something else), then the super-block
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate
super-block:
e2fsck -b 8193 <device>
**********************************************
Linux then gives me a root prompt to correct the problem. I had done
two things (that I can think of) at my last login before I started
getting this error: 1) installed KDE (worked fine), and 2) forgot to
unmount my Zip drive (hdb4) before shutting down my system. I tend to
think it may be a problem with not umount(ing) before shutdown. I had
used my zip drive to read files from a disk formatted under windows. I
tried the suggested e2fsck but this did not help (as far as I can tell).
What do I do? Is this a problem from not umount(ing) the zip drive
before shutdown? Can this be fixed with out having to re-install
anything?
I'm using RedHat 5.2 on a PC. I boot from a floppy instead of having
LILO in the MBR.
Thanks in advance,
Bo
