Hi :-)

Actually you really don't need to worry ( I run a dual boot box with
win98 and Linux SuSE 6.2)

Since you want to install them separately you only must watch out when
you select the drive for Linux i.e. hda would be your first drive and
hdb your second if you use EIDE drives if they are SCSI then it is sda
and sdb.

It would be a good Idea to put Linux on the second Drive unless NT is
able to boot from the second drive.
To boot you system ( for the time being) you could use a floppy and
when you know more about Linux you can use Lilo or loadlin or any other
boot manager that would boot linux.
This way the there is only one entry in the MBR. Not to forget to change
in the BIOS C to A-drive at start up.

Since you install a SuSE :-) one more tip there is a installations
option install as server do _not_ use this option because SuSE will be
using _both_ HDD's....

Other then that I don't really see any problems installing your Linux
:-)

Have fun <- as your Linux team would say :-)

i changed the setting in /etc/ineted.conf and it worked as intended.
but strange thing happened. the file suddenly changed back to what it
was like before i edit it! for example, i commented out the finger
service and did a "killall -HUP inetd", 12 hours later it became uncommented.
same thing happen to /etc/issue.net.
i don't think anyone has access to my sistem, so what exactly is going on?

Hi,

I increased my swap size by creating tempoarary swapfile according to the
man page of mkswap. However, I forgot to disable the temp swapfile before
reboot the system. After reboot, the temp swapfile disappear in ls
directory but it still allocate disk space (as shown in df). How can I
release the unused disk space?

Thanks in advance.

Get a boot disk and rescue disk. Boot from boot disk and enter into

Are you sure you are not doing something wrong? It is not that you could not
figure out how to do this, but if you wish to deny access to some files or
file systems, would not the way be to do it with file permissions? What if
you are logged in and want those partitions mounted, and someone else is also
logged in for whom you want the partitions unmounted? Linux, unlike some
other operating systems, is not a single-user operating system.

Is this now sweeping the dirt under the carpet? While synchronizing your clock
to another more reliable one on the Internet is probably a good idea, if your
clock gains 30 minutes per week, something else is wrong and should be tracked
down and fixed.

It is not a Linux problem, in the sense that neither of my two machines have
it. This machine loses about 3 seconds a day. My other machine, I cannot tell,
because it synchronizes itself with this one about once an hour, and is never
off by more than one second.

It might be a Linux problem, in a way, if your /etc/adjtime file may be messed
up. The easiest way to fix that is to just delete it. It will be replaced with
another one that is initialized to something that is much less likely to have
your system gain 30 minutes per week.

I have NO problems with Netscape 6 beta2. With flash I can navigate the

Linux isn't for everyone, and it's sad the fact that HW companies are less
inclined to support it.

Sounds to me as though someone has set up a daemon (perhaps by setting up a cron
job somewhere) that is changing it back. Perhaps you are mistaken and someone
does have access to your system and cracked it. Better check all the files
referred to in /etc/crontab as well as all the files in /var/spool/cron and
maybe /var/spool/at. Be sure to look at ALL of them; i.e., even (especially)
those whose names start with a dot. Do ls -la.

Hi,

I'm using Red Hat 6.1 on a sparc based mashine.
I would like to emulate solaris to use some little solaris-based
programs.
I already copied the required files from my solaris 7 system to

/usr/gnemul/solaris/

But it seems that my linux kernel doesn't own the solaris kernel module
:

[root@dawe-sparc10 /]# insmod solaris
insmod: solaris: no module by that name found
[root@dawe-sparc10 /]#

Does someone know where to get a (precompiled) solaris-kernel module ?

Greetings,

Daniel

more likely: they want or need a computer, go to the next store and
get told that ms is the only thing available. not being experts, they

Most of the folks I know in the retail business don't know how to
operate anything but windows. The technicians may know how, but the
money is in working on MS boxes. It's a "volume" thing.

Subject: msdos fdisk does not see linux swap partition

Hello,

Don't tell me I'm posting to the wrong newsgroup. Here at least, I
stand a chance of getting an answer.

I had three normal partitions on my drive, NT, Linux, W98, and an
extended partition for Linux Swap.

I went into W98 to add an extra partition for it. Fdisk (and foolish
me) did not notice the linux swap, and would only allow a 1.9Gb of the
13Gb that were available. I created the partition, killing the Linux
Swap. Well, I remade the swap space, and Linux is running happily on
the UDMA66 disk, thinking it is on ide0 (boot append
ide0=0xd400,0xd802).

W98 however, is not that happy. When booting, it assigns all available
drive letters, C & D are ok, but E=C and F=D, and G=C and H=D, ... up
to Y=C and Z=D. This disables the use of the CDROM, so I can't
reinstall. W98 gives a warning: logical drives past Z exist and will be
ignored.

Before the error, W98 ran without problem on this configuration.

Shall I delete the extended partition and start over?

Any idea will be greatly appreciated, I know some of you have one now
and then.

Gerard
