hi, thanks for the mail.
I am not very familiar with writing device drivers. I wrote a few small kernel
modules
on Linux. For Solaris, where can I get information about writing such code?
should I follow
similar procedure to Linux ie. rebooting the kernel, loading the kernel
modules etc.?
Is it not enough to just compile and run the code as 'root'? (I guess not! but
I just want to be sure)
Also, is it not possible that atleast code compilation takes place at user
level even for
Kernel modules? Or is there a separate procedure followed?
Id appreciate any help in terms of books/links.
thanks,
Vardhan

If you have no knowledge of Linux or BSD, and only know windows, and don't
have time/patience to learn Linux or BSD, then you'll have less headache if
you installed Win2K on both.
WinNT/2K borrowed a lot of code from BSD, because due to the licensing of
BSD, MS, or any company for that matter, can borrow code without revealing
it. As long as you stay away from Win9x, you should be fine.

Subject: How to configure my Windows keys in Gnome v1.4?
Date: Fri, 04 May 2001 05:47:19 GMT
I have been reading the newsgroups and trying to use xmodmap to
configure Windows keys in RedHat Linux v7.1. So far, I have been unable
to make them do anything. This is what I have so far in .Xmodmap file:
!Left Windows Key
keycode 115 = Alt_L
!Right Windows Key
keycode 116 = Meta_R
!Windows Menu Key
keycode 117 = Menu
I would like to make my Windows keys to bring up my Gnome Start
Favorites menu. I can't even make my Windows keys to do anything (i.e.
make CAPS on and off.
Any ideas on what I did wrong? I look forward to receiving replies
soon. :)

Pretty damn stable. I have it on three machines.
Only problems were that one of my cdrom drives
didn't like dma, resulting in it getting added
to the dma blacklist for anaconda (Bug # 38397),
and a learning curve I am going through now
to set up the host to host communications, now
that the security deal has been beefed up a
little. As it says in the Bug recommendation,
at the boot prompt I had to do:
boot: linux ide=nodma
and that solved the problem - anaconda didn't
crash that time.
I couldn't get my CDRW to work with 6.2 at all,
nor with 7.1 (beta), Wolverine, but it works
great under 7.1 Seawolf's X-CD-Roast which is on the
start menu with KDE 2. I play audio CDs on it
and then burn software, then audio CDs, then
go back and listen. It does it all, correctly.
I even tried both CD-R and CD-RW, and everything
worked fine.
You'll like the new KDE and the 2.4 kernel also.

kppp, the connection is established BUT nothing works! i tried netscape and

ping a machine i know from the console, it didn't reply. my kppp settings
are as follows:
authentication: PAP
pppd arguments: noauth
IP: Dynamic IP Address
Auto-configure hostname from this IP: Unchecked
DNS: tried to leave it empty and to put in a couple of DNSs
Disable existing DNS Servers during Connection: Unchecked
Domain Name: empty

I have seen this also going from win 2k to linux (RH 7.1 beta), never
did find out why. The win machine I see it on has had all updates from
the windowsupdate URL listed above. I suspect it is something stupid,
like end-of-line termination quirks.

I average about 1.1MB/s regardless of vfat or ext2. What does the zip look
like at boot time in dmesg? What is the output of dumpe2fs /dev/sda? How
do you mount it?

thnx a lot. Unfortunately this directives can only be used in 'other'-
sections and not in image-sections :-(
At least I downloaded recent lilo-sourcecode and found a programm called
activate coming with it. I wonder if I can rewrite the source to make it a
deactivate ...

Is it possible to see the output of your debugging log and the actual
"options" file that you are using. The debug log normally provides a lot of
valuable information. You might like to check your routing table after you
have formed a connection. This should tell you whether or not a route was
created or not. It is quite possible that a default route is not being
inserted into your system.
See ya

You can work around this ofcourse, but there may be better solutions:
chain two lilo's.
The first has an others section that can use (de)activate and points to the
partition where the normal LILO is stored

Tim,
Your a star! I rechecked the mount options that I'd copied from a
autofs file for a parallel version ...
zip -fstype=ext2,rw,sync
:/dev/hdd1
I removed the sync - and now its SOOO much better!

IIRC, there is a patch that supposedly allows R/W access to HPFS partitions, but I

There's a couple on hobbes.nmsu.edu:
hpfs_103.txt 862 2001/04/04 Linux driver for reading and
writing HPFS partitions
hpfs_203.txt 862 2001/04/03 Linux driver for reading and
writing HPFS partitions
The "103" version is for the 2.0.x linux kernels and the "203"
version is for the 2.2.x kernels.

I'm not aware of any way to read or write OS/2 extended
attributes from linux. You can use the OS/2 "EAUTIL" program to
split the extended attributes into a separate file if you wish.

I believe the original poster is referring to OS/2's HPFS
filesystem. The stock linux kernel includes read-only support
for HPFS filesystems. There are other patches to give read/write
support for HPFS.
Isn't the Mac's filesystem "HFS"?

xterm usually binds that to shift pageup/shift pagedown.
