For example eddieware (http://www.eddieware.com), with a combination
of intelligent HTTP gateway and a DNS server which implements load-

I don't know about 2.5.7 but rpm-2.90 at Rawhide was definitely
broken (confirmed by someone at RedHat). I had to install a tarball
version of an older rpm to be able to do anything. They don't call
it the bleeding edge for nothing!

How can I create a empty (actually filled with zero's) file with a
specified size ?
I know there's is a command arround like this on Solaris, but coudn't
find anything for Linux yet...
Maybe something like "touch" that enables me to create files of any size
instead of only 0-bytes.

Don't panic. The fix is easy, you just need to make a new boot floppy.
Is this the boot floppy RedHat made or one you made (using
rawrite.exe?)? If the later, you need to do it again. It is actually
best if you use dd on a UNIX box. If it is RedHat's, I guess you got a
bad floppy -- this is not a major problem, you can re-make it:
Boot your machine up (or any machine with both a CD and a floppy drive)
in either MS-Windows (or DOS) or Linux. If Windows, open a MS-DOS
prompt window and use the program rawrite (in <CD-ROM
driveletter>:\dosutils\) to copy the boot.img file in <CD-ROM
driveletter>:\images\ to the floppy drive. Under Linux, mount the
CD-ROM (as say /mnt/cdrom) and use dd to copy the image: 'dd
if=/mnt/cdrom/images/boot.img of=/dev/fd0 bs=9216'.
One point: DON'T power up/down the computer with the floppy in the
drive. Floppy drives are not stable during powering up or down and it is
possible a power spike can cause the drive to write junk on the floppy
during powering up or down. Wait for the memory test or BIOS copyright
notice, etc. then pop in the floppy disk.

Ya, Hummingbird Communications has been doing this for awhile. Its fair, but no where
compares to the Linux OS. Linux X11 emulating a MS environment is more
stable than MS Windows emulating a X11 Linux environment. NT crashes (BSOD) too much
when pushed by heavy apps.

Hya there,
I got a strange prob.... when trying to compile software (kvirc or
kthememanager or such) the configure script bails out at;
checking whether the C++ compiler (gcc ) works... no
... C++ compiler cannot create executables...
I'm using gcc 2.7.2.1-6 on SuSE 5.3. Tried with kernel 2.0.35 and 2.2.0.
Strange fact: kernel 2.2.0 compiles like a charm...
Solution anyone?
Looking forward to answers that work... :-)

Hello,
I was wondering what people are using these days to encode MP3 files
under Linux. I was using the 8hz encoder several months ago, and liked
it a lot, but now I see they've pulled it off their website due to
possible problems with Fraunhauer(sp?) :(
Is there anything comparable that people recommend, or other sites where
I could still get the 8hz encoder? I've looked around on the net a bit
and nothing jumped out at me.
Thanks,

Is your QIC02 card found at bootup ? If so, reading and writing
files from/onto the tape can be done with "tar" or "taper" .
The drive should be addressed as /dev/tpqic150 .
You can't mount it that way, though there is a tool out there
which would allow addressing the tape just like any other HD partition.

The simple answer is, of course, to open up port 20, which is FTP's data
port along with port 21. Look in your /etc/services file for the list
of various ports.

Hi,
You have to open port 20 as well for normal FTP.
Normal ftp works with a control connection and a data-connection on port
21 and 20 resp.
Check your /etc/services to see it...
