I have a coulpe of questions for Star Office 5.1 users. First, can the
Linux version read both the Windows version and MS Office files
directly, or do you need to use a filter?

Star office 5.1 comes with a database. Does anyone know if it can
read/write MS Access files? What other db files can it read/write?

Thanks,
Dennis

I'd like to try installing some games and other programs. As I'm new to
Redhat, I think I'll stick with RPM's for now because even they can be
tricky. I set up Sabre and it just isn't running, it's not in the menu,
in its folder, clicking the icon does nothing.

With some BIOS you can allocate the 'save-to file' as a separate
partition, and if you do so, this save to disk feature doesn't
depend on the DOS/WIN partition and file system remain intact,
including the active boot partition flag.

Hi

When playing a wav file manually using "cat file.wav > /dev/audio" it
seems to be playing about 20% (my guess) too slowly. Has anyone else had
this problem with an sblive card? I'm using driver 0.3 with kernel 2.2.11.

Oracle 8i is resource intensive as well as full of bugs. I run Oracle 8.0.5
on a Dell Pentium 90 with 48 MB and performance is not a problem. I just
use it to study for the OCP since we only have Oracle 7 at work. For a
production environment my setup would be woefully inadequate.

I presume you're talking systems. A PPro 200 just isn't suitable for
me since they lack the power I want, and EDO RAM is damn expensive
these days.

Remember, the UK doesn't have the same education system as the US.
Our university is essentially your college I believe.

Besides, after spending 300 UKP upgrading my current machine, I'm
skint.

I never actually tried playing a wave file using cat - but I do remember
when I installed the 2.2.10 kernel initially I had many problems with my
soundcard. Sometimes the SBLive didn't even load at startup - and at others
the wave files were very slow.

I went back to 2.2.7 and have no problems. My guess would be the SBLive
drivers - they are still beta and I can only wait for a better copy really.

Thank you for your answer, but i managed to make it work after asking on
#debian . The problem was that the Windows partition was marked as ACTIVE and
Linux one wasn't. So, i used linux fdisk, to set windows partition to
non-active, set linux partition to active and run lilo again. It worked like
a charm!

startx starts an X server on the linux box - just what you are seeing

you have to have xdm (or kdm or gdm) running on the linux box and set up
an XDMCP session in your win9x x-server (exceed) to do what I think you want

take a look at

http://www.msu.edu/~mulksc/LinuxHints/win95xserv.html

for complete details as to how I did it using X-Win32

Put the cdrom in and as root type mount /mnt/cdrom. Then cd
/mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS

ls XF* to see what packages there are.

Hopefully you will have already looked to find what Server your card
needs. You can find that somewhere in the docs, but I'm not sure where.
You can also find a list at www.xfree.org. Because you do not want to
install ALL of this stuff. You want XFree86-3.3.2...rpm for sure. Also
75dpi and 100dpi. I'd recommend getting XF86Setup too. XF86Setup
is a nice tool for configuration of X. Oh, you will need the libs too

So that's XFree86, 100dpi, 75dpi, libs, XF86Setup, and of course the
server you need like SVGA or S3 or whatever. I don't see docs listed in
my RH5.2 manual in the back. If that is there, I'd take it too.

rpm -ivh XFree86..whatever.rpm It will probably have to be done in some
order and you will know because it will give failed dependencies and you
will have to go do another one first - like maybe libs will need to be
first. I'm not sure what the order would be.

I don't know Apache, but all I see in the book is apache and apache-devel;
so that one will be either just the one or possibly devel is required for
what you will be doing.

I've got it working w/o problem. It works with RH 5.1/5.2/6.0, so I guess it
should works with kernel 2.0.X and above (may be older kernels should work too
because it doesn't depends on the kernel but with the PCMCIA-CS package).

I think that Linux and Redhat due a bad job of supplying new users with,
particularily Windows defectors, with the info to run these machines.
I've had Redhat 6 for a couple of weeks now and still can't get some
basic stuff figured out. Very frustrating at times. But I hate Bill's
Box so bad that'll I'll stick it out, I just wish it were easier is all.
