Sorry if this is not the right NG. Please point me in the right direction :)
Does anybody know of a booking system for Linux. I plan to use it at a small local
theater, wich has
a max. seating of 1500 people. It must be able to handle several bookings a once, also
with
different number of seats.
I tried looking as SourceForge but they only had hotel booking software.

My new RedHat6.2 (writes too thin) doesn't know fontconfig.
/etc/rc.d/seems to have a sub-dir for each of the VTs
but no rc.font.
A 2 hour 'tour' via related man(s) cycled me around the complexities
of unicode, ISO ??, bla-bla. I don't want to do a Ph.D !!
My old Slakwr allows font selection at installation/configuration.

I had a dual boot system, with Windows on the main disk, and Linux on the
second. I had LILO running on the main drive so when I booted, I could
choose which to boot.
That Windows drive died, so I lost my LILO.
I was wondering what the path was to get my Linux drive to boot.
I have the Red Hat 6.2 package.
Any hints are appreciated.

X is defined by that and the drivers you need, applications, services,
etc. What software it takes to make your computer system workable.

I will give you that, if it makes you happy.
However, you should consider the fact that we are just beginning to
build distributed applications and environments today. Just beginning
as we are, do we really understand the nature of distributed
computational environments so well that we have nothing to gain by
considering the nature of distributed computing?
By comparison with nature, we dont even build distributed systems.
For example, the average human is constructed of something in the order
of 1 trillion cells. Each of these cells (sans blood cells and sex
cells) contain a complete copy of the whole installation library
(DNA). Based on a cell's role, it differentiates in response to its
environment and other factors. Differentiation is performed by
selective expression of characteristics from a common library of
possible traits. Expression results in RNA. RNA builds the proteins
that drive the processes that make some cells those brain cells you
refer to, while others become muscles, skin, etc. The very definition
of distributed computation.
Do our software architectures scale? Not when compared to nature.
Consider that the same DNA mechanism scales from bacteria to elephants
and whales, works in extreme cold, and in extreme heat. A trait, like
a gene that produces insulin, can be put it into a bacterias DNA and
it just works.
Then consider that the very purpose of Sex. Sex is about the selection
of better libraries of functionality so that the organisms that result
take the best set of features forward through time. Sex doesnt have
much to do with evolution, which is about adding or changing the genes
that comprise DNA. (You can view development as a form of evolution
since it adds to the possible features that one might have in the X for
a computer system.) Sex is about distributing the very best features
as widely possible, while balancing the need to retain as many options
as possible.
Consider the asexual approach to configuring computer systems. This
would work if we had one definition, provided from one source. That
definition would provide for all the possibilities one might encounter
in building computer systems. To allow scaling from embedded systems
to servers, this definition would provide predefined configurations for
each type of system. You know, this sounds quite a bit like
Microsofts .Net idea. Except that changes and distributions of
features cant be avoided, unless all these distributions happen to be
perfect. What are the odds of that?
Sex isnt a dirty word, it is the basis for configuration management of
living organisms. Genetic diversity refers to a rich set of features
within a set of organisms which can be used to support those organisms
though a range of conditions through time. The better the feature set,
the more successful the organisms. Open software (like Linux) is about
building up the genetic diversity in computer systems. This is as
opposed to Microsoft, which is about owning the genetic diversity that
we all depend upon.
Do we really have nothing to learn here?

I need HELP fast! - I downloaded the free ver of corels linux ahile ago
and installed it using the some free space on my existing drive rather
than letting it run thru windows 98. Everything worked ok, with this
install to use it you started windows 98 in safe mode and ran it from a
dos prompt. All cool so far. I aquired another hard disk recently and
thought that I'd use it as a Linux only disk, so I booted from the
Corel cd, picked the use entire hard disk option, and created a linux
and swap partition on the new drive. Now when I start the computer it
goes to the Linux menu, with no option for the windows operating system
on the c: drive, and there is no way I can see any of my 10 gigs of
data on the c: drive. If I take out the new drive I just get an
operating system error when it tries to boot off of the c: drive. I
even installed another clean drive, re installed windows on it, but I
still cant see the data on the original drive. I am at a complete loss
here, when I installed Linux I pointed it specifically to the "d" drive
to install its files on, but it has done something to the c drive so
that I cant see it. I understood that Linux would still be able to see
the windows files, but I can't even do that. I'd be happy just to be
able to get at my data so I can copy it then fdisk the original c:
drive and re install win 98. I think the data is still there but dont
know why I can't run windows or see it.

I agree, and yield. Occasionally I don't process English all that
well, (thinking "expressions" when I am writing "equations"). This is
a sad state, given English is the only spoken language I use ;)
Still, chemical equations are valid, and don't contain an equals sign,
and are appropriate for describing processes such as transcription and

| That is not true. You can use for example the aic7x module with an
| initial ramdisk (you have to mkinitrd and specify it in lilo.conf) and
| then boot up the system through a aic7x based controller without hassle.
Putting it in the initrd instead of the kernel certainly makes
generating a new kernel harder, but in terms of getting the benefits of
using a module it doesn't buy you much. You can do the boot and two
stage load, but other than as a proof of concept it isn't all that
useful.
That said, in the 2.2 kernel you need uni and SMP versions of modules,
so you can select the initrd to get the ones you need. That makes sense
on a distribution disk which must be flexible, but for regular users
it's probably not worth the effort, since an SMP kernel seems to run
okay on uni, if somewhat slower.
The need for separate modules is supposed to go away in 2.4, although
I have NOT verified it.

Obviously. If it's a definition, it presupposes that it
needs to be predefined.

Well, this is a darn good analogy, even if it is slightly
overstated. Let's carry it a bit further, though. There is a
definite "cost" to sexual reproduction. It takes energy and
time to locate a mate and to exchange genetic material.
There are hosts of organisms, who live in relatively stable
environments, that are entirely incapable of sexual
reproduction. Many of them have existed for billions of
years so they must be doing something right!
Some organisms adopt a sort of dual strategy (eg
Athropoda:Cladocera _Daphnia_ sp.) When times are good and
relatively stable, they roll out one, fixed set of code (one
configuration) for all systems, to use your words. During
times of stress, however, be that low temperature or low
oxygen tension or whatever, they begin to reproduce
sexually, swapping code with others, in order to enhance
variability in the resultant individuals, presumably to
enhance the probability that those individuals will survive
uncertain times ahead.
So, if we're going to roll out "one definition," that fixed
solution doesn't have to be perfect, as you imply in the
last sentence. It needs only be sufficiently good that the
cost of rolling out a more diverse "definition" is
prohibitive given the expected conditions.
>Sex isnt a dirty word, it is the basis for configuration

Of _some_ living organisms...

Well, again, this is an overstatement. The best level of
diversity is that which is appropriate, and not much more,
for the conditions likely to be met. It makes little sense
to carry around a whole bunch of code you're likely never to
require unless the cost of carrying around that information
is small.
>Open software (like Linux) is about building up the genetic
diversity
>in computer systems.
I don't see how this follows, and I'm certainly not trying
to be recalcitrant, refractory nor obtuse. I think it's more
like the two vying participants in the Human Genome project.
One group is motivated to do it because it could have
enormous repercussions for humanity and because, well,
frankly, because it's an exciting challenge. The other...
>This is as opposed to Microsoft, which is about owning the
genetic
>diversity that we all depend upon.
Well, this is the other, who figures if humanity is gonna
benefit from something then, by golly, I'm gonna make a
fistful of bucks from it. I'm afraid if you want to argue
that Open Source is better at producing diversity (which I'm
not necessarily denying,) you're going to have to back it up
with some arguments.

Hi, thanks for taking the time to read the post.... ;-)
I have a Dell 2300 Server(ish) Machine with 3 2940u2w's, an AIC7890 and
AIC7860. I added an Adaptec 2930 which from the posts I've seen should
be recognized just fine with the AIC7xxx driver. I cannot see it
though. It has one device hanging externally, a DLT4000 tape drive.
The card initialized just fine and recognized the drive. The SCSI bios
is not being installed (though neither are 4 of the other 5) but I
don't think this is the problem.
This is what I am seeing in /proc/pci:
Bus 0, device 12, function 0:
SCSI storage controller: Adaptec Unknown device (rev 3).
Vendor id=9004. Device id=3860.
Medium devsel. Fast back-to-back capable. IRQ 22. Master
Capable. Latency=32. Min Gnt=4.Max Lat=4.
I/O at 0xc800 [0xc801].
Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xfe201000 [0xfe201000].
But I also find this little gem at the bottom:
warning: page-size limit reached!
Any thoughts? Should I force another driver or will the AIC7xxx driver
work? Should I replace the card with something else?
Thanks!!!

That did not work, at least not in the way I tried it. EZ bios only creates
windows partitions, and did not allow linux fdisk to write to the partition
table.
What I try now is doing it without EZ-bios. Using linux fdisk I first
created primary linux partion for /boot, then within, the area supported by
the bios, I created two primary partitions for windows (type c, fat32 for
LBA disks), and then a extended partion containing the rest of my linux
partitions. But windows did recognize my partiontable!
Can windows work with two primary partitions, allthough windows Fdisk,
can't create them? I suppose I can boot win95 from the second partition
with lilo. Do I have to start partioning in linux fdisk with the o command
(create new dos partition table)? Or can I better forget lilo, and try
loadlin? But then I still have to create linux partions with linux fdisk on
a disk with EZ-bios.

I really don't know AOL and MSN instant messenger but to know the port
used, I think you just need to use something like iptraf to read the port
used by the packets.

Alas Grega, I am no DNS wizard. My understanding is limited to ACL's
and that is about it.
There will be MUCH better advisors to this topic than I.
I have discovered that killing and restarting a caching name server
on a crontab can bring in a continuous stream of cache poisioning
from an unsuspecting adversary. Continuous streams of such bad data
can be very usefull to the people who watch for such things.

I am sorry I am not able to answer such an important question.
