Hello,
I tried to deny connctions to doubleclick.net by doing this:
ipchains -N doubl
ipchains -A output -j doubl
ipchains -A doubl -i ppp0 -d ad.doublclick.net -j DENY
ipchains -A doubl -i ppp0 -d m.doubleclick.net -j DENY
then save, flush and restore, the -L option gives a list of
IP-addresses, ok.
But I'm still able to ping to both adresses. Why's that??
thanks for help

Better yet, just being curious (and had booted up on win98se instead of dos),
I opened a "dos" window and did "format a: /s" and wonders of wonder, the
floppy was formatted and the "system" was written onto the floppy with the
command.com. Placed the bios files on the floppy and the bios upgrade
worked automatically as the files from the company also included an
autoexec.bat. A nervous moment did occur as when the system booted by
the floppy disk, a msg saying "starting windows install....." just before
the autoexec.bat ran and the bios updated.

it's always baffled me as to why mandrake continues to optimize for
pentium. how many people have i586 pentiums, that is, pentium-classic
or pentium-classic-mmx? note -- pentiumpro, pentium-ii/iii, celeron
are i686 *not* i586. optimizing for i586 makes things worse for
i686 when compared to either optimizing for i486 or i686.

hi
i'm trying to connect 2 computers directly to each other using ethernet
cards.
both cards have been installed and their drivers successfully loaded,

try
to ping one of the computers from the other, data is sent by the network
card,
but i receive a "Destination Host Unreachable" error ie. the other

does not receive the data.
the network cards are a 3Com Etherlink III (3c509) and an Intel

I'm running Linux 2.2.16 (Slackware 7.1)
I do the following:
1. at boot time, the driver for each card is loaded.
2. on machine 1:
ifconfig eth0 197.3.2.1 up
route add -host 197.3.2.1
on machine 2:
ifconfig eth0 197.3.2.2 up
route add -host 197.3.2.2
3. from one of the machines eg. machine 1:

Subject: sound mixer questions
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Sat, 20 Jan 2001 14:29:25 -0500
I'm running Mandrake 7.2 and I have a Soundblaster AWE64 Value sound card. I've
noticed two areas in which Linux's sound system behaves differently from
Windows, and I was wondering if there was any other way of doing it.
Most importantly, I have seen no mixer program that lets me mute a channel while
still recording from it. Under Windows, I can be recording from the line input,
and adjusting its level, while having it muted so I don't have to listen to it.
Under Linux, while I can select the input I wish to record, I can't turn it down
so I can listen to other channels. If I turn down the volume slider for that
input, the recording level goes down also. This is annoying because I like to
decode various digital signals from shortwave radio, but after I have them tuned
in I don't need to listen to them (I can monitor the level visually) not to
mention that some of them need to be a little louder than I like to listen to to
decode properly.
The second thing that bothers me is that at boot time, when the sound card is
initialized all inputs are on and the volume is at maximum. The mixer settings
are loaded immediately thereafter, but for a moment there's a burst of whatever
is connected to the input if I've left something connected to the input. This
is particulary annoying if I'm using headphones :-) The reason I don't always
remember to shut off my radio when booting into Linux is because under Windows,
I don't have such a problem. Somehow, the sound card is apparently initialized
with whatever my last settings were, even on a cold start. Under Linux, even on
a soft reboot the settings apparently get wiped.
I can live without a solution to the second problem, but I'd really like to have
something to take care of the first one.

Subject: How I setup reiserfs (2.4.1 kernel)
Date: Sat, 20 Jan 2001 19:31:27 GMT
This is a short description of how I setup reiserfs on my RedHat
7.0 box. It may save some others a bit of work.
WARNING! Just my notes, maybe not complete or correct. WARNING!
WARNING! Proceed at YOUR OWN RISK! WARNING!
I have been compiling and running the 2.4.1 pre/test kernels and
around pre7 noticed that it supported reiserfs. Since I have
heard a lot about this, I decided to try installing it.
Steps I took:
0) compiled and installed 2.4.1-pre7 (and subsequently 8,9) with
reiserfs support; did this from tarballs and patches.
1) Downloaded some src.rpms:
reiser-utils-3.5.27-2.src.rpm
lilo-21.6-5mdk.src.rpm
mkbootdisk-1.2.8-2mf.src.rpm
(they also have, I didn't use them:
kernel-2.2.17-8.R.src.rpm
anaconda-7.0.1-7mf.src.rpm )
from a link off the www.namesys.com site (<- Reiserfs "home" ?):
http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/
and compiled and installed them.
2) Converted a "test" partition, /home, to see how it would go:
backed up the partition, umounted it, partitioned it as reiserfs:
/sbin/mkreiserfs /dev/hda6
then restored to the partition from backup.
3a) altered the /etc/fstab for /home:
/dev/hda6 /home reiserfs defaults,notail 0 2
Note that the usual fstab options, e.g., "check=none", valid
for ext2, will cause mount to boggle. And, according to various
faqs, you NEED "notail" on /.
3b) I was having problems mounting and umounting /home,
found by using strace that I needed to add a line to
/etc/filesystems:
# cat /etc/filesystems
ext2
nodev proc
nodev devpts
iso9660
vfat
reiserfs <--- I added this
4) "Installed" /sbin/fsck.reiserfs as a symbolic link:
/sbin/fsck.reiserfs -> /bin/true
5) rebooted, voila, it worked!
6) converted all other partitions except / and /boot:
-/boot < 32M, so cannot put reiserfs on it, anyhow not
recommended
-/ needs special attention
7) for / conversion, I followed a faq by Rob Bos:
-you need a spare partition on the same drive as that containing
/
-I made a spare partition, /dev/hda7, formatted it as ext2, and
backed up / to it.
-then altered /etc/lilo.conf to allow booting the alternate /,
"linux-bk":
# reiserfs
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=linux
read-only
root=/dev/hda3
# root is ext2 backup of reiserfs /;
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=linux-bk
read-only
root=/dev/hda7
-ran /sbin/lilo, re-booted to linux-bk, reformatted /dev/hda3 as
reiserfs (phew!), backed up /dev/hda3 from /dev/hda7.
-re-booted to "linux" where / = /dev/hda3
Reiserfs system!
Needed in California, where PG&E are playing power games with the
residents! (I have a UPS, tho, just in case.)
If anyone notices any mistakes, problems, or much better ways to
proceed, please post a followup and/or e-mail me and I will post a
correction if needed.
FWIW, Bob L.

I ran across this post the other day and it works great. Some websites
use a lot of doubleclick links like IDG.net and this will break some of
the links they use to redirect you to articles. If you are running your
own DNS then add these lines to /etc/named.conf and restart named.
zone "doubleclick.net" in {
notify no;
type master;
file "named.local";
};
If you don't run your own DNS and/or don't want Doubleclick links broken
and just want to block connections to doubleclick then you can block
them with this. The lines below may get wraped in email.
# The Doubleclick example will filter ALL types of traffic to the given
# class-C networks including WWW, SMTP(email, etc traffic. If you
# want a slightly less restrictive example, see the AOL example.
#

Subject: Re: printing

What linux distribution are you using? What kind of server is running
the print queue on your network?
RedHat provides a convenient configuration tool to get a linux node to
talk to a windows printer. I think it's a front end providing
information to samba; I know that 1) I've never had to configure samba
by hand or otherwise directly, 2) my box doesn't think that it has any
local printers at all, and 3) if I disable samba, I can't print anymore.
I don't know if any of the other distros provide this tool. RedHat
calls it printtool, and you can invoke it from the command line. You'll
need the name of the printer you want to talk to, the ip address of the
print server, and a couple of other pieces of information (it's
menu-driven and pretty clear).
good luck
