When I try to compile kernel 2.2.0 with support for SB16 (not a clone, a
real Creative Labs one), the compilation ends with this message:

I'm using gcc version 2.7.2.3.

On older kernels (2.0.36 for instance) I had noticed a bug if you used
"make xconfig" to configure sound support. The trick was to use "make
config" the first time around, and everything would be fine. Now however
even this does not work. I even tried with a freshly untar'ed kernel,
and never used xconfig on it.

Anyone know a work around for this? Would it help to upgrade to 2.2.1 (I
would really hate to download the patch, patch the kernel, configure and
compile, just to find that it STILL doesn't work).

I'd appreciate if any answers are forwarded to my mail address
([EMAIL PROTECTED]) as well as to this group, because I rarely get
a chance of reading ng's these days.

Thesis? What subject? A standard layout file can easily be modified to
your needs. Also, the margins and other things that are so fussed over in
theses are easy to set-and-forget in LyX.

LyX does give you some added help, though, in that you see the real
equation, and if you misstype, you will clearly see that it is wrong. It
cuts down on error-corrections. It also allows these shortcuts, which are
faster but only if you remember them.

There are a few extra tricks added -- but maybe that was before 0.12. It
is now possible to have layout files include standard bits from generic
files (look at how that ams* stuff is done now), but your old layout files
should work without modification.

You might want to post it to the LyX lists as well; it might become a new
standard.

I have heard of someone who ran loadlin similar to you (boot into win, then
restart in dos mode) and it wouldn't work. It did work, however, if they didn't
boot into win first - do a cold boot, and when it says starting windows 9x, hist
the F8 key, and choose "Command Prompt Only", or even better (probably more
likely to work:): "Safe Mode Command Prompt Only." The latter will totally skip
loading any piece of M$ software that's not necesary to give you a prompt. Then
try your loadlin...linux shouldn't have trouble throwing out M$ then..

Other possibility: Make sure your kernel supports: FAT, FAT32 (VFAT), and
UMSDOS. All three.

Worst case scenario: boot disk. Or chop your partition, and lilo...

Pah. There are much better alternatives. For example, "microemacs"
and "jove".

The former if you just have to run something with "emacs" in its name.
The latter if you actually want to do things like compile+debug in your
editor.
jove compiles to something like a 100k executable.

I taught myself DOS and later Windows, but I never needed an
instruction manual. Windows is only difficult for users who don't have
the guts to do anything they don't know about. For Linux however, I do
need a manual. In DOS, some 6 years ago, I discovered that typing HELP
gave the answer to my questions. Linux should have something as easy
to use. In fact, in Linux you absolutely need to know the (most
important) key-combinations because else you're doomed.

Hello,

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System

   /dev/sdb8 506 522 136521 82 Linux swap

However, mkswap fails with error :

# mkswap /dev/sdb8

while there's no problem if primary partition is used. Would anyone please
help ?

Thanks a lot.

Date: Fri, 05 Feb 1999 21:20:57 GMT

Greetings,

I have a DTC 2278E VLB controller card on a 486DX4 100 running RH 5.1 Linux .
I don't think the card is running at its fullest potential, meaning DOS and
Win 3.11 with the latest DTC drivers were loading a lot faster. The system
had 32MB of Ram, so memory shouldn't be an issue. I also read some of the
past post which suggested I put the following in the first line of Lilo.conf
"append dtc2278e". I did, and there was no speed difference. I then went on
the Red Hat digest newsgroup and read their V98 #411 issue, and a gentlemen
had the same problem. However, he was able to get the dtc2278.c module or
Linux driver and recompiled his kernel, and noticed an increase in speed. I
am new to Linux and would like to know the best way to approach this? Where
can I get the dtc2278.c module or driver and how do I recompile the kernel to
use the driver?

Thank You

-James

FAT32: Have you set permissions for the directory where the partition
is mounted? It should be writable by 'other'.

CDROM: Check the permissions for the file that the link /dev/cdrom points to.
It should be readable by 'other'.

I've been using partition magic for several years and find it to be a
great tool and very reliable. But to use it, you must have a dos
machine available to create a partition magic disk which you would boot
from, and do whatever partition changes you want. Partition magic
doesn't run on linux although, if you also have NT or Win 9x in another
partition of your linux machine, you can run partition magic from there.

I think it goes without saying that you back up your machine regularly
and especially before running partition magic or similar tools! Be sure
that you have a linux boot disk for your system, especially. That way
if the boot sector with LILO gets damaged or removed, you can easily
boot from your disk and re-install LILO.

for those who have more than 16 Mb of RAM:

before you do anything . . .try to run free -m from an xterm. this will
give you the amount of memory that linux "recognizes". i was running linux
so slowly before until last night when somebody posted a recommendation on
this thread (i think).

i found out that my linux was only running on 16 Mb (i had 96 Mb) w/c
explains why it was taking sooo looong to load the appps (especially
netscape). another way of doing this is to run the "process list" app or
"sysinfo" from the Info tab in Windowmaker or After Step. look at the
headings (upper right value) and check whether you are using the actual RAM
that you have.

i tried to do the append="mem=96M" in my lilo.conf then run /sbin/lilo and
reboot. after that, linux recognized my 96 Mb RAM as reflected in another
free -m command from xterm. apps were loading superfast!!! i was impressed
 . . . but then . . . .

BIG PROBLEM!!!! ---------------- my system hangs up in the middle of
running apps . . .

if i'm not mistaken, there might be another option when you compile a
kernel w/c allows you to make use of more than 16 Mb RAM. i'll have to do
that still . . .

the bottom line is that linux runs fast. some say that 2.0.36 recognizes
more than 16 Mb RAM but the rpm kernel installation from RH did not
probably check this option since they were gearing for a minimum
installation.

Why don't you ask the folks who make Opera? As an alternative to
Netscape, I use grail, which seems to cope better with some web pages,
but is usually slower.

Soon, the open-source Mozilla will be the small, beautiful and fast
browser we all want.

While I have a very high opinion of O'Reilly books,
I don't agree in this case.

There are 2 standard LaTeX books:
The LaTeX manual (LaTeX2e edition) by Lamport,
and The LaTeX Companion (Goossens et al).

All LaTeX software is available from the CTANs, eg ftp.tex.ac.uk .
There is a very good manual there in /tex-archive/info/lshort
(in several languages)
which might substitute for the LaTeX manual.

This video card does not appear in the list when configuring X. And when
probing for card specifics it returns an error!
Can someone please help me?
I installed Linux and used it for the first time this tuesday, so, please be
rather specific when describing HOWTO.

Calle

KDE is not a window manager.

Bonus! The lack of multitasking is one of the most important reasons
why DOS destroyed Unix in the marketplace.
