I have a Canon LBP 430 printer and every time I try to print anything from
it all I get is a bunch of garbage on the pages. I can print pure text on it
from a regular text session in linux but I can't print mail to it from X or
print anything off Netscape.
Is there a printer filter for this printer that anyone knows of?
Thanks

It's in /dev !!!
I don't think you'll be doing what you think you're going to do.
Quoting from page 261 of "Linux Device Drivers"
"initrd" is a facility that establishes a temporary running environment
before it mounts the real root filesystem. Modules are loaded from
within the the ramdisk being used as the temporary root file system.
Since the initrd process is run after all boot-time initialization is
completed (but before the real root file system has been mounted),
there's no difference between loading a normal module and one living in
the initrd ramdisk. If a driver can be correctly loaded and used as a
module, all Linux distributions that have initrd available can include
the driver on their installation disks without requiring you to hack in
the kernel source."

You could telnet into the box or set up a Xserver running on a remote
workstation as an X terminal. I won't claim to be an expert here so you
will have to find the deetail somewhere else.
If you can get the February copy of the Linux Journal they have an excellent
article called HUNTING HURRICANES. This very interesting article, which
I've already went back to a couple of times, has many interesting ideas on
the use of Linux in complex systems. The authors describe a complex
system, part of which is running RT-Linux, and the use of X terminals to
communicate with it. The whole article is very interesting as it focuses
on the use of Linux in an application domain that many do not associate
Linux with.

Have you tried looking at the wiring on the boards and checking
out APMD? You might be able to wire your servers power switch so
that it trips a gracefull shutdown and then powers off.
Seems like someone should write a howto on this.
Also, I suggest that you upgrade the kernel to the last stable
2.0.x. I think it was 2.0.37? But the local FTP site would
have it for sure.

Subject: Compaq Deskpro and PCI BIOS
Date: Fri, 12 Feb 1999 21:00:16 GMT
Hello all, OK, I think I've read all the readme's and Howto's before
coming here so I am desperate for any help. I need to get my onboard
NetFlex-3 PCI Ethernet card working in Linux. Everything else works great
with this RedHat 5.2 installation. I have a Compaq DeskPro 6000 with a
Pentium Pro 200, Adaptec 2940U PCI SCSI Host adapter with a 2 2GB seagate
hard drives, an IDE CD-ROM, 96MB RAM and a RedHat 5.2 Install CD. Currently I
have my 1st HD setup with 2 Partitions, NTFS for the c: drive and FAT for the
d: drive, both approximately 1GB each. On the second drive, I have a 24MB DOS
partition, a 47MB Swap partiton (sdb2) and a 1947MB Linux root partiton
(sdb1). Neither Linux, nor the Redhat Installer will recognize the
onboard PCI ethernet card. It is a NetFlex-3 PCI card. From what I've read,
this is because the PCI bios on this model is stored in Hi-MEM and is
inaccessible by Linux. Fair enough, I can find the Compaq movepci.exe file,
load it on a DOS bootable floopy and go. Problem is, hoe to get Linux
to boot from here so that I can take advantage of this change? Using
loadlin, I have gotten the error "Idle task could not sleep" which seems to
have a resolution and is posted all over the web in German. All I THINK I
need to do now is boot into Linux from this poitn and do an insmod and
ifconfig to get the card going. Is there an easier way to do all this? Am I
on the right track? Th kernel I'm using is copied right off the Linux root
partition and boots the machine fine from the NT boot.ini file. Any help
anyone could give me would be very appreciated. Thanks in advance. --Dave

You are probably setting up a default route onto eth0 (you have an
ehternet card in your machine I assume.) Kill off the default route
before you start up ppp-- eg in the script which stars up ppp.

Subject: Linux + NT, moving from floppy boot to harddisk boot
Date: Fri, 12 Feb 1999 16:15:54 -0500
When I installed Linux I chose to boot from floppy. Now however, I would like to
boot from the hard drive. BUT I am also running NT, so I looked at the NT OS
Loader + Linux mini-HOWTO at
http://metalab.unc.edu/mdw/HOWTO/mini/Linux+NT-Loader.html
because I want to use the NT boot loader because I don't want to mess with the
NT bootsector.
My config is the following. I have two hard disks, one IDE and one SCSI. NT is
on the IDE, and Linux on the SCSI. My Linux drive has a root partition (sda6)
and a boot partition (sda1).
When I boot from the floppy, LILO says to press enter to boot from sda6. (Why
doesn't it boot from sda1 which is my boot partition where /boot resides?)
Anyway, I config lilo.config so LILO should put the bootsector on sda1 (or sda6,
I've tried both). Then I run lilo. Then I peel off the bootsector from sda1 (or
sda6) and throw it into C:\bootsect.lnx of my NT filesystem. This is what the
mini-HOWTO says to do.
Now, when I choose Linux in the NT boot loader, it starts up fine, goes much
faster than using the floppy. But it stops with a panic, where it tries to mount
or find the root partition. When successfully booting from a floppy, it says at
one point: "found compressed kernel image at 0" or something similar. When
trying to boot from the hard drive it stops at that point with something like
"VMA: could not find root".
What am I doing wrong here?

Hi everybody,

I thought that by using lp4, it should be able to
print color image, but still it becomes bw color. Did
I misunderstand anything? I tried printing some PS doc

I will appreciate any advice. It is a pain to go back

You might run a find /usr/src/linux -size 0 first. Might be some
object file got messed up and I cannot tell which C file those functions
are in. It's really not easy to say what is going on and what is to
blame, but take a look in /usr/src/linux/net first.

I had two Matrox Millenium cards, two monitors and Metro-X.
I could run X on both monitors, but it worked like 2 desktops of
a "pager" like KDE or FVWM or Window Maker have.
I could not run 2 seperate X sessions! I couldn't run a console on one
and X on the other! I wanted to be able to run X -query to another
machine on one monitor and X locally on the other... Couldn't do it.
I even called Metro-X and they said it could be done but that they
didn't
have any plans to do it.
As far as I know X11R6 has no restrictions on the number of X Displays
you can have on one box (i.e. 10.10.10.10:0 10.10.10.10:1
10.10.10.10:n....)
But XFree86 has no provisions for handling this.

File caching and the like. I have 128M RAM, and at present I have
only 3156K free, allegedly, even though I'm really only running
XEmacs, X and Netscape (each under 15M), a bunch of <1M processes and
a few a little bigger (GNOME processes ~3M, with 2.5M shared).
If you're interested in specific programs, then look at their usage,
not usage over the whole system. A properly written OS will use as
much memory as you've got, if only to cache files and things.
(Obviously, the OS ought to gracefully release such cached memory on
request, too.)

I didn't do the upgrade (hadn't even heard about it 'til now),
but sndconfig auto-detected my Ensoniq (1370) with no problems.
It played the sample fine too... it's just that the drivers with
RH 5.2 suck... :(

? there are specific drivers for the 1370 and 1371 chipsets...
as I said, though... they aren't so good.

Mark,
I ran sndconfig from root & it auto-detected the
Ensoniq Audio PCI w/no input from me- I did the
Creative Labs upgrade on the card (from Ensoniq's
old site) before I ever loaded Linux, don't know if that
would make a difference...

Subject: jumpers for ide card
Date: 13 Feb 1999 14:38:20 GMT
I have an IDE controller (multi io) card I want to use as a secondary
controller.
I need to set it's IRQ to 15 and Port address to 170h - 177h
The problem is I don't know what the jumper settings are. Can anyone help ?
The card looks prety standard. It has UMC controller chips on it, it has
parallel, serial, game, FDD, and HDD connections.
The jumpers that it has are:
j1 ..
j2 .. (This one is used for the HDD light on the front of the
case)
jp1 xx.
jp2 xx.
jp3 xx.
jp4 xx.
jp5 xx.
jp6 xx.
jp7 xx.
jp8 xx.
jp9 xx.
jp10 xx.
NB xx indicates current jumpers
"." represents and empty pin
If anyone can help that would be fantastic
thanks
Wilson

Hi folks,
I'm having problem installing "lyx 1.0.0" in my system. Before I was
running "lyx 0.12" fine without any problem.
Anyway, when I try to install "lyx 1.0.0" by typing "./configure" ---
- it gives me following error message -
[root@redhat lyx-1.0.0]# ./configure
loading cache ./config.cache
configuring LyX version 1.0.0
checking for prefix by checking for lyx... no
checking whether make sets ${MAKE}... yes
checking for a BSD compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking for a working C++ compiler... configure: error: Unable to find
a working C++ compiler
As far as I know I have "egcs / gcc" installed. Is there anything I am
doing wrong?
Thanks very much.
