Mandrake 7.1 did not have gcc-2.96. It's too old for that. The problem
with replacing 2.96 with 2.95.2 or .3 is dependencies. The system simply
quits working.

In your case, you were upgrading and not replacing your existing gcc files.

Not sure about this. You can # cat /etc/fstab and see if your win partition
is listed. If it is you do something like (su)# mount -o vfat,ro,noauto
/dev/hdb? /mountpoint. Check # man mount.

The P3 is from the monitor control buttons.

Which version? The latest Sun JDK (1.3.1) works OK with RH 7.1, older
ones may need some special tricks (see the Red Hat release notes).

Well, it's not the "wrong" way, so much as "not the currently
fashionable way". He can certainly use a umsdos root partition.
It's usual to have the files under a directory called /linux
in the root. The kernel searches for that setup when you give the
umsdos partition as the root fs.

As to umsdos not using the vfat long file names .. that certainly used
to be the case, and used to be mended by applying the dmsdos patch. I
don't know what the situation is nowadays. I imagine that it might
use native vfat long filenames, if asked to.

Hello;
I have read about the utility IDE-DMA. It sais that it can
enhance the performance of IDE devices but that it can
corrupt the data. Has anyone more information about this
utility and how can it be used safely?. Thanks.
