Subject: vmware and 'sub-optimal' system

www.vmware.com will tell you that a PII350 with 128 meg ram is the
recommended minimum, but it works beautifully on my p200, 48 meg ram
running slak and the best window manager out there (unashamed and
perhaps debatable plug for flwm).
There's one win app that I needed to run which the wine team hadn't
implemented libraries for (it's French and obscure) so I thought I'd see
what vmware would do on my machine. Not only does it boot Win95 in an
xwindow, but it runs the app I needed and Word97, and an ftp session to
my *nix host, all at the same time at a performance level comparable to a
486/100 with, say, 16 or 24 meg ram. Did I mention that I had Emacs
running on the side, with three open xterms? This thing isn't the drain
that they claim it is. It's actually a lot easier on resources than
wine.
It's an incredible piece of work. Ironically, I was finally able to
delete my windows partition only after 'installing' windows through
vmware. Vmware isn't wine, they aim to do two very different
things (the first runs a guest os, the second will eventually run win
executables _without_ any trace of windows itself). If you _must_ run
certain winapps, or just want to test your python freezes for
portability, don't let the PII350 disclaimer stop you from trying it
out.
And if you're migrating to this post from one of the other vmware threads
with a sanctimonius tone about how vmware offends your sense of *nix
purity, you're welcome to your point of view and you can post whatever
and wherever you like (of course), but stick it just the same.

Don't know exactly why this should be so, except that some elements in
your .emacs file might be incompatible with one version or the other.
For example, there are some variables used in Xemacs that are not
present in GNU emacs. I think this problem can be avoided with some
conditionals. I know I certainly have always had Xemacs & GNU emacs
both working on this box. I don't like Xemacs & don't use it,
however. I just use GNU emacs when I'm in X.

Sounds like 'updatedb' running. Look in your assorted crontabs
(especially root's) for it. It's updating the 'locate' database. 'man
updatedb' and 'man locate' will be enlightening...

Subject: Netscape Messenger hangs up when not connected, why?
Date: Thu, 08 Apr 1999 09:55:30 +0200
Hi,
I use Netscape Messenger to read my email using a POP3 server, I am
connected via ethernet. But when I try to launch Netscape Messenger
without connection at home it's blocked for some reason. ONly the
Messenger part, I dont have any problems using the NS Navigator.
I am running SuSE 5.3 and KDE, Netscape 4.5, and I use a DLink 660
PCMCIA Network card.
Does anybody know what could be the problem? Does Netscape try to get
some connection even if I dont try to get my Email? There is no
online/offline mode in the Linux Version of Netscape ...
Please send answers per email,
Thanks,
Christian

Subject: RAID PERC/2 problem (AAC-364 vs AIC-7897 ?) [Dell PowerEdge 6300]
Date: 8 Apr 1999 07:59:37 GMT
We've just purchased a new DELL PowerEdge 6300 (Quad Pentium III)
and a PERC/2 controller. It has 3 x SCSI disks and a SCSI cd-rom.
We cannot install RH 5.2 on it - the install stops when we attempt
to run Disk Druid or fdisk - it says that no drives have been found.
We've tried the updated RH 5.2 install disk images from Dell with
no success.
It seems that the PERC/2 controller is not the AMI MegaRAID one,
but one based on the Adaptec AAC-364. Looking at the board we've
also found two AIC-7897 chips.
Choosing AIC-7xxx for "other SCSI devices" doesn't work. Could this be
because the CD-ROM already uses the module or the chip to talk to in
this case would be AAC-364 ? There doesn't seem to be a driver
for it.
We can of course hook the SCSI disks directly to the "normal" SCSI
controller and bypass the PERC/2 card, but then we'd lose the RAID
functionality.
Does anybody know any way of getting the PERC/2 controller working
with Linux ?

I returned forma long trip to the Pacific to find my linux box giving

documentation on this and how to fix it? It's quite disconcerting to
see this everytime I start up the dumb term in my bedroom.

There is a version of mpg123 which was hacked to give output
to ESD. You can find it at:
http://www.tux.org/~ricdude/mpg123-0.59p-esd.tar.gz
You'll have to compile it yourself, of course...

The ftp daemon is running because I can grab files via ftp from outside (I
was wrong before, see below).
I looked at inetd.conf and it seemed fine.
Does host.allow or hosts.deny have something to do with it?

I wonder if it has to do with hosts.allow and/or hosts.deny? (Or is that
for telnet or what?)

The new versions of syslogd log this "-- MARK --" entry
during periods of inactivity so you can see that the daemon
was still active during that time.

You could either use some sysinit-editor. There is one available in the
RedHat's control-panel if you installed that. Otherwise you'll find the
init-scripts in the /dev/rc.d folder and you could edit them by hand
commenting out the undesired daemon.

I suggest you take a look at Mandrake (http://www.linux-mandrake.com/)
which basically consist of the RedHat-distro (http://www.redhat.com/),
which is widely popular and one of the easiest to install, and KDE
(http://www.kde.org/), which has a look and feel making it easy for
people used to the Windows-environment. Also, during the install you
will get the option to choose a workstation-installation which will
install and set up your computer in a useful way.
For the dual-boot question I suggest that you take a look at The
Linux-DOS-Win95-OS2'' mini-HOWTO
(http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/mini/Linux+DOS+Win95+OS2.html) and
some of the other HOWTO's at http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/.
Good luck,
