I've tried and don't think it can be done. The javavm which comes with
Oracle hangs as soon as you start ./runInstall.
It installs on a system using glibc-2.1.3 but not on a system using
glibc-2.2.2. Install Mandrake-7.2 or an earlier version of RedHat which
uses either glibc-2.1.2 or glibc-2.1.3. I know it installs on Mandrake-7.2
and I was using Oracle-8.1.7.0.1.
Or, you might try to find the lib dependencies inside the Oracle jre and
attempt to symlink the required lib names. Haven't tried that, but it
_may_ work.

Perhaps if I crank up my AC power frequency, over clocked the CPU,

Subject: Strange minor problems with CD and 2.2.19
Date: Sat, 05 May 2001 18:31:12 +0100
This machine started out as RH5.2 2.0.36. I'm running VMWare 1.1-317
(which is quite old but they want $300 for an upgrade - a bit steep
compared to the $99 I paid originally) and xcdroast 0.96ex as a
convenient front end to cdrecord etc. I have both an IDE CD-ROM and a
SCSI CD-RW. The IDE is hdc and is the one mapped by VMWare to its
virtual machines' CD drives and defined to xcdroast as the input device
for copying CDs. I have since put in kernel 2.2.19 and all its
prerequisites.
When the kernel was 2.0.36 there was a small problem with VMWare's
closing the CD door as soon as I had opened it when a Windows virtual
machine was running, making inserting CDs a little tricky, and another
with cdrecord's failing to allocate DMA memory, both of which now seem
to be gone (hopefully in the latter case, as it was intermittent).
However, a new problem has arisen which is common to both VMWare and
xcdroast. Both try to access the CD drive on startup, and should not
care whether it has a disk in at the time. VMWare has been told to use
/dev/cdrom which is a symlink to hdc; xcdroast hasn't been told anything
and should detect CD drives. Intermittently, both fail to find it.
VMWare complains that it cannot open /dev/cdrom because there is "no
media found", and xcdroast deletes the IDE CD from its list of eligible
devices, although it always finds the SCSI CD writer. Both operate fine
if there is a disk in the drive at startup, and intermittently if there
isn't (I get an impression that it's dependant on how long since the
device was last used, but it's not modules being unloaded, as `lsmod`
does not change between its working and not). It is never necessary to
mount the CD, just to insert one. Both continue to operate correctly
once they have been started with a CD loaded.
Another symptom is that VMWare intermittently complains that software
control over the CD drawer lock is not available, and advises that I
"upgrade" to 2.2.4 - when I am on 2.2.19. This doesn't matter to me.
I will experiment further, using xcdroast as I have the source, but if
anyone has seen this problem before I would be grateful for any
suggestions.
Regards, Ian

This is comp.os.linux.misc. This is not OT here.
There are newer versions of Oracle. Do you have a reason to stick to that
old one? Maybe a slow modem? :-)

Try reconfiguring with CardBus support enabled instead of i82365.
Then use the yenta_socket module in place of i82365 as your socket

That's simular to my position.
But after buying a modern HP Printer (HP1220/PS), I
was very very diapointed. HP told in Dec. 2000 a big Liar on their
Porductdiscription Website -- PosScript capable. So it would be fine for
Unix/Linux, but they are telling liars ... it's SW-PostScript in

Then I bought Epson, and all customers we consult also.

I haven't, but why don't you just try physically disconnecting your DVDROM (or
CDWriter), ie. remove the IDE cable from that drive and then try the
installation. There's no way you'd have the system look in the wrong
place if there's no connection.

Hello,
I am in the process of aquiring some Quad G100 MMS boards for a kiosk-type
system. The basic idea is a single computer with 4 monitors and 4 keyboard/
mose USB pair hooked up. I'm planning on configuring XFree to bind certain
keyboard/mouse
pairs to each display. While figuring this out I have come up with a few questions
that someone here may know:
1. Does XFree 4.x support the G100 MMS? I know MetroLink offers G100 drivers.
2. Can the TV Input feature be used with eigher the Linux drivers or the MetroLink
ones?
3. If the TV input can be used, can it be copied to each display?
Thanks for you time.

Hey all you Linux peoples...
I have been trying to install Linux PPC on my G4 450,128ram box...
I have partitioned the drives exactly how the instructions said:
/ (root)
swap
/home
/boot
And i setup a fifth partition to boot the installation of linuxPPC...
I got to the installer and i mounted ONLY ROOT (was that where i
went wrong?)
Then i selected the packages and some of them installed, and some
didn't: it gave me an error message saying that "NAME OF PACKAGE
could not be installed. Continue?" I pressed continue and went
along my merry way...then i set a password and all the network
settings. and rebooted. I got to the boot up screen and the linux
booting screen comes up and goes to 14%....then it stopped and gave
me an error.......
could anyone give me some insight into this matter????
Thanks alot and send responses to:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
thanks again...
P.S. please excuse my stupidity on this matter...i am just beginning to
join the linux revolution!

The newest version of 8i is the one which I cannot install on a glibc-2.2.2
system, 8.1.7.0.1. I checked otn.oracle.com yesterday and there are no
newer versions.
The fundamental problem appears to be the new glibc and the solution is to
install an older version of Linux, preferably Red Hat, and then upgrade the
kernel and any packages which have security problems.
I suppose it might be possible to replace Oracle's jre with one which will
run under glibc-2.2.2, but what other problems will that bring with it??

Go to www.workspot.com They will give you (free) a remote linux desktop
which can be used with a browser or a vnc viewer. I tried it with I.E.5
and win98, have never tried it with linux.
Follow the link for "remote linux desktop", and register.

, something like this wouldn't be accepted, if you can't handle the
