Subject: How to use justlinux's dynamic DNS client?
Date: Thu, 08 Apr 1999 08:41:37 GMT
Hi,
I just tried justlinux's dynamic DNS client
(http://www.justlinux.com/dynamic_dns.html).
I downloaded jclient.pl, ran jlclient.pl -c, and
everything seemed to be OK. But NOW
I fail to update my IP adress.
When I try, I get either "you don't own <my hostname>"
or "can't connect to <don't remember host name> on
port <something like 2345>"
1. Where do I have to run jlclient? In rc.local? As a cron job?
(My DHCP client renews the IP every hour)
2. How do I have to run jlclient? ./jlclient ? (does not work)
Thank you for your help
Amaury

It turns out there is a place in linuxconf (great utility!) that starts
and stops all the services.

Yes. You'll need to ensure that /etc/hosts.deny and allow let the
computer you want to connect from in. A line like
ALL : ipofothercomputer
or to be more restrictive
in.ftpd : ipofothercomputer
in /etc/hosts.allow should help.
Another thing, though, is that the fact that you can use ftp (the
program) to connect to *another* computer is nothing to do with whether
the other computer will be able to connect to you via ftp (the daemon),
as they are separate entities.
And that's the first time I've used the word "entity" on usenet.
Having said that I see from your other post that your /etc/inetd.conf
seems ok. Though AIUI, wu-ftpd is more secure and has better logs.
Perhaps you have something in /var/log/messages or /var/log/secure
saying what might be wrong??

Did u give chmod a+r for the .html files, too? It is not enough to give
read perm to the directories.
If u write cgi scripts, dont forget to give execute perms for all to
the binaries (just a hint).

Hi everybody,
I'd like to know if somebody has managed to setup multiple sound cards
under the new 2.2.x kernel using modular OSS drivers ? The only howto
I've found about that tells to make some changes to the autoconf.h file,
but is intended for kernel compiled driver...
We are planning to use two identical SoundBlaster compatible cards.
Thanks a lot, and best regards, - Patrick -

Not completely sure about that... unix shell syntax is much more
powerful than MS-DOSes command line; a mistake like:
rm -rf / some/directory/path
isn't as likely under MS-DOS.
(The quivalent "mistake" would be to do format c:, but you are less
liely to type that by accident.)

You can set up ppp so it can be started by any user!
If have it set up in that way.

Floppy's and CDs can be made to be mountable by "ordinary" users,
by setting suitable settings in /etc/fstab .

Sure, but you'd have to restore only your own data, which is much less
work than doing a full reinstallation/reconfiguration.

Well, perhaps not, except that you should feel some guilt. ;-)
Seriously though, when the system is set up properly, things like
PPP and mounting/unmounting can be done from the user account.
I only use the root account for installing and configuring software.
That's quite seldom; weeks pass without me su-ing into the root account.

I managed to make my AWE 32 PNP work under Suse Linux 6.0.
Now I would like to play Audio CD's with the CD players provided by KDE.
That works fine when I boot the system from scratch ( i.e. after power
on ) and the audio CD is already in my CDU55E.
If I eject the Audio-CD and mount a "normal" CD, from this moment on the
audio player does not recognize audio CD's anymore ( though I properly
unmounted the data CD-Rom before ). Instead the audio player always
indicates "CD ejected".
Any ideas ??
Thanks in advance.

It seems like the best solution to the problem is to pay more
attention to what you're doing. ;-) There are some graphical IDEs for
linux. Xwpe, Code Crusader and RHIDE are ones I can think of
offhand. I can't imagine what you were doing in the Windows IDEs that
can't be done in a good editor. Any good editor will allow you to
jump to error lines in the code. But missing punctuation or brackets
will typically create bizarrely irrelevant messages, anyway.
At any rate, GNU emacs does this. You can compile within the editor
and the *compilation* buffer pops up, listing any errors. Then
C-x ` steps you through the error lines in the code.

Hi!
I've looked through the documentation for Samba 2.0.3 but haven't found
the following.
I want my Samba PDC to establish a trust relationship with another PDC
running NT Server 4.0 SP3. Is this possible?
What I want is that the NT Domain trust's the samba-domain, so that you
log on with your nt wks to samba as usual and can map network-drives on
another NT Domain.
Thanks .. and answer via email since I don't read these groups very
often.

I'm not sure about the "trusted" domain. That would imply Samba's PDC
code was 100%. It ain't so. It is getting better, but, I have seen NT
clients crash while using Samba as a PDC. On the other hand, Samba as a
member of a domain and using an existing NT PDC works great, very
stable.
Why do you want it to be a PDC if you already have an NT box around?

Steve,
You need to create this file before the X server can pick it up. Usually there
is a tool that will guide you through the proccess, picking you video card etc.
I think in red hat it is Xconfigurator. you may have to run it a few times to
find a configuration that suits. You can also type setup at the prompt and set
it up that way, this is how you will set up a new sound card etc.
