I have a directory, ~/bin for that. The permissions for ~/bin are 0700,
and likewise for ~, so the chances of someone putting a Trojan horse
into ~/bin are pretty small. If they can do that, they probably figured
out the super-user password already.

I had similar problems to you until someone in another newsgroup
suggested I upgrade my modutils to 2.4. This may well be in the
required software list someone else mentioned. Anyhow, I DLed modutils
at www.kernel.org (it's there, keep looking for it) and installed it
with rpm -Uvh. After that, my sound card no longer gave a "failed"
while loading. My lockd still does, but according to someone else in
this thread, that's supposed to do that. :-/

Hi,
I set HP8100 network printer in my workstation, I have checked "Fix
stair-stepping test", and I use lpr command to print it, but if the line is
too long in the file, the line will be truncated, not auto return and print
the line wholly.
Which opition should I use for lpr or which setting do I miss.

Hello,
I would recommend using tar, why?
It just works and is easy to handle if you really read:
man tar
man mt
You should start your backups with nohup and &, let tar write the blocks
it writes
to nohup.out, use a non rewinding device eg. /dev/nst0 the first time you
use it,
if it's done try the mt tell option to get the block the tape stoped,
now last_block_from_nohup.out/block_mt_tell_done gives you the factor you
have to devide
other block_numbers from the nohup.out, now you can position (mt seek)
your tape in a few seconds and
read the file you want...:-)
(Just make sure you have the nohup.out file (bzip2) compressed handy)
You can even script this and use it over ssh to backup to a central
backup-server, and send you nice mails if it's done including
the output from fdisk -l + (df -h) + cat /etc/fstab + (mount) (You'll
need them in case of a hd failure)
All those other backup tools, I looked up (if your serious, try to get
the great O'Reilly Book Unix Backup & Recovery),
just have some problems, one of them: If your machine with the tape
crashes, you have not only to re-install the system but your
shinny backup software too, and get it all running....
While you have tar & mt on every rescue distro system CD you could just
boot off and replay your system on a new hd...
Modules like SCSI support are loadable from my distro (SuSE) boot
CD....:-)
The most important about backup:
It's worth nothing if you can't recover in case of failure!
Good luck

Date: Thu, 11 Jan 2001 23:18:49 GMT
Hi,
Is there any software, commercial/non-commercial, for linux mirroring?
I have 2 NFS servers. Only one is used by clients. I want first server
(which is used by clients) to automatically mirror the data to another
NFS server at the same time. So whenever some transaction will be
updated on first nfs server that will also be updated on second nfs
server automatically. The second nfs server is for failover purposes.

i merely used setiathome as an example of a program that actively
runs. anything like a simulation, a computational program, busy
network daemons like hpptd/apache are also examples. it's not
intented as serious example of usage. hopefully you get my drift
anyway.

Subject: KDM Login Screen Customization
Date: Thu, 11 Jan 2001 16:03:05 -0800
I am trying to customize the KDM 2 login manager so that, in the
pulldown tab in the login screen, one can load either KDE,
Enlightenment, WindowMaker, or AfterStep. Now when I go into the KDM
login manager as a user I can't change the four tabs, but if I click
modify then I can after I enter the root password. But the changes I
make as root aren't there if I open the login manager again as a user
and aren't there at the login...they're just the same damn kde, gnome,
failsafe, etc. defaults. Before in KDE 1.1.2 (or so), when I modified
them, then in /etc/X11/xdm/Xclients (or Xsessions, I can't remember),
which I believe was one of the next files to be loaded I would export a
global variable based on the result of the menu item selected, and then
in ~/.Xsession it would read the value of the system variable and launch
the appropriate window manager. It used to work in KDE 1.1.2. What the
hell is going on with KDE 2? Does it not do things in that order?
Thanks much in advance,
Jason

I have had 24 setiathome W/U's running at the same time. Though it was
only to see if linux could and would do it, it did, and is possible but
slow. I will say one thing though I only run a max of 2 W/U's at once on
my system now, linux ran all 24 without complaining or crashing once.
Now that is power!!

On SuSE that command doesn't exist. Unless Andr runs the same system as you
he is out of luck.
lpq -Pqueue
tells what is on the queue
If for instance the queue is 676
lprm -Pqueue 676
will flush the printout.

You're right. I did a little fiddling to see how it works, since
the man page isn't clear. Looks like you can do "chown user.name:"
to change to user with a dot, but it has the side effect of also
changing the group ownership to the primary group of user.name. If
you go by the SYNOPSIS in the man page, the dot shouldn't work at
all.
It seems to me this is a bad choice, and it would be a better idea to
just go with the standard method and port old shell scripts rather
than making it incompatible with new scripts written on the many POSIX
standard systems. The other one of these that bugs me is bc
producing banner output which breaks any script that tries to parse
it. Sure you can avoid it with the -q option, but then your script
won't work anywhere else. Well, there's always perl scripts.

Is there a utility or something for the command line that will allow you
to control the size and type of fonts for printing, without putting the
file into an editor... also stuff like landscape printing, two-page per
page, etc...
One of the things that I miss the most from Windows (maybe by now the

I'm sure that there is a good way, but I can't find it...

Only problem you might have with tar is without multi-streaming or
buffering, you may not be able to keep the drive moving all the time.
If a streamer runs out of data, it has to backup and then come
back to speed which slows down the write considerably. You can
hear it doing it on a lot of drives. I was thinking the HP DAT
was a helical scan drive which isn't impacted that much by this
due to the slow transport speed, but I'm not familiar with that
particular model.
In any case, if you're backing up more than a few small systems,
I would always go with a commercial grade backup program. They
handle tape labeling, scheduling, indexing, and various other
things that are easy to mess up doing it manually. A lot of
shops don't like to plunk down the cash but it pays for itself
in labor saving and backup reliability.

Interesting. Modprobe only asks for ppp0 if it's asked to ask for it.
DO a strings /sbin/modprobe | grep ppp and you'll see both ppp0 and
ppp1. Try modprobe -c | grep ppp and you'll see ...
alias ppp0 ppp
alias ppp1 ppp
alias tty-ldisc-3 ppp
so one would suppose that ppp0 can be requested by the kernel, and
that it is translated to a call for the ppp module, which he has not
got (or it would be found).

Because the kernel is asked to access the network device which is known
as ppp0. Apparently it's ldisc-3.

The first error is from modprobe. I'd need to see an ifconfig ppp0.

I'm not Dale, but I had the same problem. The mail was getting

To fix this, relay your mail through your ISP.
I use postfix, and set relayost to my ISP'd mailserver in the

Did e2fsck say anything about removing directories/files/illegal blocks?
What's on /dev/hda7, anyway? /home, /usr, / ?
This sounds like a problem with X or one of the files it depends on to
me. If you boot the system with "linux 3", does the text-mode prompt
come up? If it does, log in as root and run XConfigurator again (in
case it was /etc/X11/XF86Config that got broken), then enter "startx" at
the prompt. If something else is wrong, then X should die and leave you
staring at a text console filled with error messages. Search this NG
and comp.os.linux.hardware for likely-sounding keywords in those error
messages before posting anything. You posted from Deja; I assume you
know where their powerful search facilities are.
If you can't find anything, then post the error messages. Include
about the last 20 or so lines from startx, and any line containing
"errno=111" is useless.
If booting with "linux 3" doesn't work, try booting with "linux S".
This bypasses the normal boot sequence and dumps you straight to
single-user mode, which *might* be useful. If "linux S" doesn't work,
then something has gone seriously wrong....

The dead-tree documentation if you bought a boxed set
Should help a bit. There's a lot of information out there; use it.

You checked the box that said "Auto-configure hostname from this IP" in
kppp's Setup menu. Uncheck that box. X uses the hostname of the
machine as one component of a magic cookie that determines which
processes are allowed to access the X-server; when the hostname suddenly
changes from "localhost" to "pm-154.32.23.modempool.isp.com", X gets
very confused.
You could also do "xhost +localhost" before starting kppp... IIRC
there's a place where you can tell kppp to execute a command before
dialing, and "xhost +localhost" could be a good choice.
