Subject: Where to find program libraries
Hi
When I install or rather, attempt to install various programs onto my
Redhat 7 system, the most often occurance is
that it stops and says there is a dependency problem and names some
files.
The last program I tried(WILLOW)I would REALLY like to get working, but
again missing files.
The name of 1 was libX.os.v
I have not been able to find it.
Can someone please direct me to a site where I will be able to find this
file and others like it.
Thanx/pete

You may want to be careful with that. You do not want to overheat any
components to the point of causing failure where there was none
before. Likewise, if you chill some components too quickly, you can
damage them as well.
When I used to test hardware to meet military environmental
specifications (MIL-E-5400 was the one I used the most, but that was
about 3 to 4 decades ago), we tested things from -55C to +85C, and a
lot of severe vibration testing too. But we were only supposed to
change the temperature a certain number of degrees per hour except for
the temperature shock test (where we pumped liquid carbon dioxide into
the test chamber to suddenly reduce the temperature from +85C to
-55C). You do not really want to temperature shock your machine.
I suggest you read the specification for your machine and do not
exceed those limits. This may not be enough to accelerate some
problems, but the idea is to detect an existing problem, not to cause
new ones.
I notice that one memory test program (memtest86) deliberately reduces
the refresh rate on the memory in order to increase the chances for
failure. This kind of thing would not damage the memory, but should
certainly increase the likelihood of noticing marginal memory. Since
you are not likely to have an environmental test chamber around the
house, I am not sure how to go about changing the temperature of
modern components without risking causing new problems. I guess I
would keep the hair dryer at least 24 inches away from the item under
test. The trouble with this is that it will be difficult to identify
the problem component this way.
Likewise, do not actually allow the freezing spray (typically Freon in
the old days) to actually touch anything.

I have RH 7 with Gnome. I clicked something that removed the Netscape icon
button and all of the task bars at the bottom of the screen. It even warned
me before I said OK but I didn't understand it would take this action and
for some reason I thought it was what I needed at the time to fix something
else...
Can I get it back like it was? Possibly I need to reinstall Gnome?...If so
can anyone point me in the right direction?
I need Netscape especially, and I don't know how to launch it without the
desktop button. Thanks.

There are plenty of image viewers that will create thumbnails from the
contents of a directory. Clicking on the thumbnail will then display the
full size image. And most such programs also allow you to zoom, pan,
edit, run a slide show, and so on. gqview and electric eyes are two such
programs that come with Mandrake, for example.
There are also programs available that can create a web page containing
all the images in a directory. http://freshmeat.net/ is one place to look
for this kind of thing.

Compression obviously _eliminates_ random access as well as memory
mapping of files, and those being the sorts of things that filesystem
implementors are trying to support, it's not too surprising that this
wouldn't be high on the list of things to add in.
For good measure, consider that:
-> Image files are already commonly compressed internally, which
would eliminate any would-be benefits.
-> Applications that need to access this sort of thing can use zlib.
-> People have written interceptors for open() that detect if there's
compressed data inside a file, and automagically attach a gzip to
it.
I'd suggest that you take a look at ReiserFS or ext3, from the
"journalling" perspective, and look for user space solutions for
compression/decompression.

I have been looking for a Database that runs on Linux natively
I am used too using R:Base and Approach and miss them since moving to Linux.
Dual booting is a pain!!
Does anyone know of a native Linux that can compare to these and RUNS on
Caldera 2.4.
I don't need an enterprise heavy weight with a 10 year learning curve but
Star Offices Starbase as an example can't do the job.
Thanks Mike

Do you actually have an Adaptec AIC7xxx SCSI host adaptor on your
system? If not, drop it from the kernel config and recompile.
Do you really need the initrd? If you have an AIC7xxx adaptor,
try building it into the kernel instead of as a module and drop
initrd altogether.
NTFS support comes at a much higher level than the HD device
support. You can configure it under the filesystems section of
the kernel configuration utility.

Naw, just got new memory, and am waiting to see what happens.
Took a power hit last night, and reboot's fsck gave me
'Deleted inode xxxx has zero dtime. FIXED'
Those are the kind of things that got accumulated before,
without hostile shutdowns.
We'll see..

Subject: Please Help (Xterm problems with RedHat Linux 6.2)
Date: Sat, 05 May 2001 22:37:03 -0400
I'm running Redhat Linux 6.2 Professional (with updated kernel) on a
System with:
Pentium 233 MMX
128 MB Ram
4 MB Video
60.5 GB HDD
When I try to load Xterm (Start Button -> Utilities -> Regular Xterm), I
get a message saying:
Warning: Cannot allocate colormap entry for "Wheat"
Warning: Cannot allocate colormap entry for "Orchid"
After the message, Xterm loads, but I don't see anything that I'm typing
in the window. I'm assuming that the foreground & background colors are
the same (black) since it cannot allocate the colormap for the correct
colors...
I've tried everything to resolve this problem. I've tried changing the
resolution, etc., but nothing helps. Been at this for weeks.
NOTE: I can use Color Xterm (from the Utilities Menu) or Terminal (from
the Toolbar), and they both work ok, except for Regular Xterm.
Please help.

Ok, I've been searching, and have gotten close with my SB 16 card.
Here are some questions I'm hoping someone can answer:
I rebuilt the kernel with ensoniq 1371 loaded. I DO get sound,
but it's kinda staticy
However, 'cat /dev/sndstat' gives me Device not found.
It was there when I had tried building the kernel with SB16 support.
But now it's not there...
Is this correct? Or does it mean something is wrong?
(this drove me crazy rebuilding, re-booting, over and over again,
thinking I didn't have sound, as it was my test. Then I
'cat sound.au >/dev/audio' and it WORKS!)
I'm also trying to figure out modules, but haven't gotten the
hang of it yet. See my other thread.

Subject: Loading modules
Date: Sat, 05 May 2001 21:52:24 -0500
Using Slackware 7.1, kernel 2.2.16:
When I rebuilt the kernel with drivers as modules, they didn't load.
I'm trying to trace the boot flow to see how they are loaded, and
can't quite figure it out. It looks like it's called from rc.S.
I added modules to /etc/rc.d/modules.rc but that didn't seem to do it.
Can anyone explain this, or point me to something besides the howto?
When I do a kernel rebuild, and 'make modules' the modules
are compiled, but not moved to /lib/modules/2.2.16/...
Do I have to move them manually?
'make bzlilo' installs the kernel for me, am I just too spoiled by this?
As an example, I added sound support to my kernel. Was it even
nessesary to rebuild? Could I have just loaded sound.o and
es1371.o? I couldn't figure out where to get those to load.
(lsmod didn't show them as loaded)
kerneld is specified as needed to load and unload modules. But
the only place it appears is in rc.modules, and it's commented
out.
I'm a little lost on modules. If I knew at least one place to
start, I could slowly start to learn this. But none of the
stuff I can find starts out that simple. It all seems to assume
a lot further understanding than where I'm starting from.
Thanks for any help.

I've got Slackware 7.12, 2.2.16, and SB PCI 16 card.
It's all working. I believe it's good enough.
Real Player 8 had trouble playing as anyone but root. I
chmod 666 the audio, mixer, dsp, sound, etc... Now it plays
as the regular user.
But, then I had to set it to http ONLY for all the protocols.
Why?
I tried running the autoconfig feature in it's preferences, and
it fails, saying it can't contact a server.
But I can browser the whole world with netscape just fine.
I've run real player on my MS Windows box behind the same firewall.
It's definitely NOT a network issue, or an issue with networking
on this specific linux box.
It's working for now, using HTTP, but I'd prefer to have it
running correctly.
Can anyone give me any ideas about this? Any help is
appreciated.
