I just compiled the lread program in DOS so I can access Linux
partitions from DOS, and I was able to
copy my /root/.dialdir file to DOS and see my internet password in
that file. Is there a way to secure Linux files so DOS cant read certain
ones? Just thought I'd pass that info along...
Thanks!

I'll try this.
But as the above is clearly equivalent to
PWD=`basename `pwd``
this should be possible too. I think I've seen something like this once.
When you want a nested `, you have to use some special syntax, otherwise
the parser interprets `` as a single token.

I was looking for a free copy of the LINUX OS for my personal use. The
problem I am having is, I don't know enough about LINUX as of yet to know
what I need to start using or playing with the LINUX OS. Is there anyone
that can help? I don't know what files need to be downloaded. Or where to
find documentation. Let me know if it is possible to still get a free copy
of the LINUX OS.
Thanks!!

Actually they are clearly _not_ equivalent, since ` doesn't match like you
think it does. The first command you are running is "basename ", and the
second one is empty. If you want to nest, use $(). Better yet, just always
use $() so no one else will be led to the same mistaken impression you had.

Hello fellow Linuxers,
I guess quite a few of you have been following the development of
seti@home project. When the client finally became available to the
public I was a bit disappointed to see that there is no graphical
status display as the windows version has or will have.
Being a member of the Linux community I said to myself: "Hey, let's
propose such a beast that will put the Windows client to shame", so
here I stand on my soap box, looking for people who would be interested
in developing such an interface. I think perl/gtk would be nice as the
only way to get at performance data is the log file output, and of
course perl comes to mind first with such a format.
In case you've never heard of seti@home (the search for
extraterrestrial life on your computer), take a peek at
http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/
Regards & looking forward to hear from you,

So, yes, there are two licensing agreements but the GPL supersedes EULA. If
there were a situation where the two licensing agreements are in conflict you
can consider the GPL the authoritative license. This is perfectly legal but
I agree that the two licenses do seem to be at odds with each other on some
rather important points.

Thanks for the tips! There's one thing that I somtimes have trouble
coming to grips with, what exactly is the danger of running, say,
netscape or some other java application as root? What sort of things
can happen when doing this?
In an x-windows environment could I run as a regular user:
netscape, xterm, and mutt
and as root:
midnighcommander, xterm, and gvim
all the same time? and how would I go about starting these?
Thanks,

I am not sure if I understand what you mean exactly by a minimal boot
floppy or how you want to 'pick' which kernel to start but you could
certainly configure LILO to boot different kernels. If you are
upgrading your kernel you should do this so that you can rollback to
your original kernel if things go wrong.
You could configure LILO with the list of different kernels you want to
boot and install LILO on a floppy disk pretty easily. The LILO HOW-TO
explains how to do all of this

Your question is ambiguous, but I'll try to answer what I think you
are asking.
You need to set up a user account for your self and log on as that
user. If you need root permissions to make an adjustment, use the su
command. Craig gave a precis of it.
I've used YAST with SuSE 6.0 to create my user account. YAST just
frontends for some unix utility for creating users. Do a man on
useradd(8).
I know people are running as root the same way I know you posted with
vnWin. I see the news headers. I have seen quite a few root@hostname
from headers. I am concerned that accidents as root will give linux a
bad name. I also figure that people doing user type stuff as root are
newbies who are more likely to make the types of gaffs that could
destroy a unix system when running with root privilages.

If you don't, I won't see it.
What I do, first thing [in the morning], is I hop into the shower
stall. Then I hop right back out, because when I hopped in I landed
barefoot right on top of See Threepio, a little plastic robot character
from "Star Wars" whom my son, Robert, likes to pull the legs off of
while he showers. Then I hop right back into the stall because our
dog, Earnest, who has been alone in the basement all night building up
powerful dog emotions, has come bounding and quivering into the
bathroom and wants to greet me with 60 or 70 thousand playful nips, any
one of which -- bear in mind that I am naked and, without my contact
lenses, essentially blind -- could result in the kind of injury where
you have to learn a whole new part if you want to sing the "Messiah",
if you get my drift. Then I hop right back out, because Robert, with
that uncanny sixth sense some children have -- you cannot teach it;
they either have it or they don't -- has chosen exactly that moment to
flush one of the toilets. Perhaps several of them.

How do you get your mail? I have several POP3 accounts (including the
trashcan account) with my ISP because I don't have 24x7 connectivity
or an MX record. I use a program called fetchmail to collect my mail
from the POP3 account and deposit it in my user mail spool
/var/spool/mail/david. The .fetchmailrc file in my home directory has
a line that reads:
user foo there with password bar there is david here options no
rewrite
The mail ends up in my spool as expected and I am free to use any
e-mail program that can read from the spool file. It works.
If this helps you, great! If not, please post more information.
Perhaps someone can help you. Also, try DejaNews to look for your

Something is definatly wrong with your setup. I can run both in user
accounts. The only thing you need root for with ping is ping -f which
does a flood ping.
What distro are you using? Did you install rpms for that distribution
or is netscape installed some other way? Is it a particularly old
distribution? I am running SuSE 6.0 and it has had no problems like
you describe. Unfortunatly, while YAST is very good at getting a good
setup, it hides the user from the details of how a Linux system is
organized. I can't say what directories you should have or what the
permissions should be.
Most things on my system are root root. In my home directory,
everything is david user. There are some items owned by news and
other daemons.
I think if you get your system set up properly, you will be a lot
happier. Your system will also be a lot safer. I've done things that
made me glad I wasn't running as root.
