its telling you, "you can power down your machine now". it would be
pretty good if your machine had the power turned off yet, you still have
your box whirring! :)
as an aside, with an apm compliant bios and a recent kernel, you can
compile _into_ the kernel apm so that it will physically power-off the
box when you say things like
shutdown -h now
however if you dont have an apm compliant bios (check your motherboard
manual) then the kernel cant send a msg to the bios requesting the power
to be cut even if you can compile apm support into the kernel
also, if you have some understanding of what is happening when you tell
your linux (or indeed unix box) to shutdown, then once all the shutdown
scripts are run, then the msg that you are presented probably isnt very
confusing at all.

Have you tried tar's label feature, --label or its synonym -V.
You might look at "man tar" and "info tar" for more detail.
You can cat text to a tape but have to be careful not to over-
write something.

Try issuing this command a second time. You can use mt's status
command to see where the tape is positioned; before and after you
write the label. Also, I don't think you have to write EOF. The
writting should occur upon device closure, movement will do this.

Your Mileage May Vary. Hubs are getting pretty cheap these days. Sometimes
a crossover cable and a female/female RJ45 adaptor can cost as much as a
hub. If you can find a crossover cable at all. Crossover cables are never
advertised as loss leaders in the Sunday newspaper ad supplements, but a
hub ... you never know.
Pricing is insane. The last couple of ethercards I bought included 6'
straight cables. Similar cables packaged separately were priced higher than
the ethercards! I finally got irritated enough by the pricing that I went
to a lumberyard and spent $100 on a crimper, a couple of bags of RJ45
connectors, and a big roll of Cat 5 cable.

No, it only reports the error. It would also help if SILO would display
the silo.conf file, since i could see the path to the kernels.

You typically get a bus error from accessing a misaligned pointer. You
can not correct it without access to the source code.
Try waiting for a smarter reply than mine, or get another version of
Netscape.

What's difficult? Put all the files in the place you want them as a
final situation, list them, and run tar cvfCT mystuff.tgz / list_of_files.
run alien --to-rpm over the result.
To build Red Hat packages, alien must be called with the --to-rpm
parameter, and the name of the alien package to be converted. Alien
will then generate a spec file, and call rpm to build the package.
Note that rpm will by default place the new package under
/usr/src/redhat/ .

Yes, but so what? You want to build a binary package.

I don't understand. It sounds like you are trying to build a source
rpm, not a binary one! I clearly got the impression you wanted to
build binary ones.

I'm looking for a good soundcard with composite output that runs nicely

I've heard good things about the SBLive, but have also heard that it has

Specifically, I'm planning to use RH 6.2, but kernel upgrades are not out
of the question.
Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

Well I know about alien. But I would do it the other way around from
rpm to the tar file. Because producing a tar file, ie the possibility

Suppose you want to build say emacs, then ./configure will create you
an appropriate Makefile:
where to look for the libraries where to
install things etc.
So after running make you must modify the install option and this I
find risky. But you are right it is possible this way.

I'm porting a program from solaris to linux. When linking in linux, it seems
there is an undefined reference to 'swprintf' and 'wprintf' in a library I
created myself. Using the 'nm' command, I see that there is indeed a
reference in my library to these functions.
My guess is that I simply need to link another standard library, but I don't
know which one. (Being a new linux user, I don't know my way around these
libraries yet!)
(for the moment, I link with the following libraries: pthread, nsl, rt and
dl, and my own library)
What the simplest way to find out in what library I can find a certain
function?

Subject: Problems with Big partitions?
Date: 18 Sep 2000 14:52:34 GMT
Hi,
I still have the problem I asked about time ago, that is, a big
partition (around 50 Gbytes) gives a lot of problems. I followed the
suggestion to upgreade the kernel from 2.2.12 (RH 6.1) to 2.2.16 without
any improvement. I tried to upgrade NFS too as it is possible the
problem is triggered by the fact that the filesystem is accessed by NFS
(even if it is mounted read-only). No success, and anyway it seems the
corruption happens even when NFS is not used. After some time the
filesystem is unreadable both from NFS and from the local system, I can
umount it but it doesn't remount (it gives a "bad fs") and even fsck
cannot read it ("short read"). This keeps happening even after a reboot,
fsck, or even fdisk, can't read the partition . After a while I was able
to reread the disk (just retrying or maybe it was that I left the
machine off for a while resetting something?). I suppose one solution
could be to split the disk in two smaller partitions but I'd rather try
to avoid that as it could give problems organizing the content.
Summing up the hardware:
OS RedHat 6.1 (no X-win and / on a separate IDE disk)
with kernel 2.2.16 and nfs update
disc SEAGATE Model: ST150176LW
scsi Adaptec AHA-294X Ultra2 SCSI
the partition is (given by sfdisk -s /dev/sda1)
48845601
the filesystem is (given by df)
/dev/sda1 48078504 10178036 35458188 22% /vol00
Any suggestion?
Thanks,
