Just 'cuz I have the OSes installed here and play with them from time

I've heard good things about 4.51 but I still use 3.04; it's small and
almost never crashes.

I have a Toshiba 410CDT on which the sound works perfectly. I used Red
Hat's "sndconfig" utility to set it up and it worked first time out. Since
Mandrake is based on Red Hat, I would suggest trying that, and seeing if it
works. Not much help, I know, but it's worth a try.
One caveat: I think sndconfig expects your sound drivers to be compiled as
modules, so if you compiled support directly into the kernel, you might
have trouble getting it to work.
Good luck!

If diald is working ok, then you may want to try dialmon. You can get it
from quaking.demon.co.uk (I think, you can find it in a back issue of lg).
It is a server/client system that lets users on remote machines manually
bring the link up/down using diald. Its very simple to use/setup, and works
really well. Another option you have is masqdialer, I dont know what the
address is, but you can find it on freshmeat. Its similar in design to
dialmon but it doesnt require diald to work. of the two I prefer dialmon,
its a little more polished, but it does require diald.

If you have the money, get one that understands Postscript. That saves A
LOT of trouble! NEC and Lexmark (not on your list, unfortunetly) offer
small laser printers for about $300-$350US that have optional Postscript
modules that cost an additional ~$100. Otherwise, most laser printers
that understand Postscript cost at least $1200.

I can't reinstall netscape ! Why ? (I unfortunately moved the installed

minutes later after I read, that I mustn't do that because of the

Use setclock on redhat system. It takes no arguments an it will do the
right thing.
SETCLOCK(8) SETCLOCK(8)
NAME
setclock - sets the hardware clock from the system clock
SYNOPSIS
setclock
DESCRIPTION
setclock sets the hardware clock on the current system to
the current time stored in the system clock. /etc/syscon-
fig/clock is read to discover the format the time should
be converted to before storage. This is the same method
used by the standard Red Hat startup scripts and timecon-
fig(8).

I can't seem to find the latest binutils on tsx-11.mit.edu or
sunsite.unc.edu. I am building glibc and the INSTALL says I need
2.9.1, 2.9.1.0.16, or later 2.9.1.0.x release. I have
binutils-2.9.1.0.7. Anyone know where I can get the latest and
greatest?

See attached and/or refer to followups to my Usenet post(s).
I had a subsequent library linking problem I got around with the
attached script which points to my install directory. I think I've got
a bad 'ldd' which doesn't work with libc5 libraries. I'm trying to
research it.

The tarball is one of the options on the download page. This may or may
not be a dynamically generated page, meaning I cannot bookmark it or
refer to it directly.
It's the page you see after filling out your registration information.
The tarball is one of the listed files, IIRC.

When I tried this the ntp lost synchronization with the server as soon
as the IDSN line hung up. With demand dialing you will get widely
varying response dealys from the server as the response delay will
include the time it takes to dial the connection. This delay is measured
by xntp in an attempt to get a more accurate value for the current time,
and if it varies too much it gets in trouble.
Also, the xntp tend to create just enough traffic to keep the ISDN
conection permanently on-line, which is not a good idea when you pay
for your connect time.
I have good experience with chrony. You can have a chron job putting
chrony in online mode for a few minutes and them put in offline mode.
While it is in offline mode it will keep on freewheeling until next
time it is brought online.

That is also a solution, and it is easier to implement.
