Did your Linux installation detect it and provide the appropriate kernel

Try gedit. It may already be there as part of the gnome disribution
that gave you gnotepad+. If not go to www.gnome.org
For more editors than a person could possibly try in a lifetime, go to:

This is a very handy link for many of those searching for programs.

Having done a quick search on freshmeat.net for DNS tools that would
help automate the updating and maintaining process of domains, I came
away a bit frustrated. Most seem to be in development and many seem
partial to only specific uses. Has anyone found a useful tool that
would allow administrators to update DNS records on a more global sense
than just editing zones or named.conf files? Any good recommendations?
Editing all the zones by hand has become rather tedious and I was
looking for something to automate the entire process.
Thanks.

Been there, done that. Gnome has crashed my system a couple of times
now, necessitating a cold boot without shutdown. If the auto filesystem
check can't fix everything, you'll probably be prompted to enter the
root password for maintenance. The device should have been mounted in
read-only mode at this point, so when you get the root prompt, type
fsck /dev/{your device name here - for my system, the root partition is
hda1}
and press Enter. You need to do this for every filesystem that mounted
with errors. The system will tell you explicitly which ones this
happened to.
The computer will crunch around for a while, occasionally spitting out
various cryptic messages about short blocks, inodes, etc. etc. etc.
When it offers you a default, go with it.
When it finishes this, I do a proper shutdown and reboot. I don't know
if that's necessary but seemed like a good idea.

Date: 15 Sep 1999 09:34:12 -0500
I have Linux (2.0.36) and DOS on an NEC Versa-SX
laptop. If I boot either of these systems (using either
lilo or Partition Magic's boot manager) things work well.
I can suspend the laptop, and after 30 minutes it flushes the
memory to a disk file (on the DOS partition) and shuts down.
Note that this works from either Linux or DOS, provided
I boot Linux with lilo.
However, if I boot DOS, and then load Linux with
loadlin, then the save-to-disk feature no longer works.
I can go into suspend mode, but after 30 minutes instead of
saving to disk, the machine just locks up requiring a cold boot
(and consequent risk of damage to filesystem).
The reason I want to boot DOS and load Linux with
loadlin is because I need to run a DOS program to enable sound.
Can anyone offer any suggestions? Why should loadlin
screw up the APM BIOS in this way?

If you print lots of plain text stuff (e.g., monospaced, no fonts, etc.),
PasThru Text may be OK, and even advantageous on some systems because it
may be speedier than other options. For the most part, though, its uses
are quite limited.
PassThru PostScript is OK for 300 dpi monochrome printers, but it can
handle neither higher resolutions nor color. Both could be concerns for
the ESC 500, which can do 720 dpi color. (You'd still get 720 dpi from
built-in PostScript fonts and from fonts downloaded as such to the
printer; see my web page at
http://members.bellatlantic.net/~smithrod/wpfonts.html for more details.)

No I'm still trying emacs. I need these features:
- syntax highlighting - Perl, C, C++, html, other languages
- cut & paste rectangular blocks
- key bindings to keys I can hit really quickly for doing basic
things.
- ability to do all this by telnet. I can live without syntax
highlighting when telnetting
Does anyone use Emacs the way I want to?

It's a 176mb Windows .zip file, installs a ~550 mb version
of Mandrake 6.0 on a fat16/32 HDD. It runs an ext2fs in one
big file anywhere on a dos HDD. Installation is a snap, just=20
extract the .zip to <drive>:\Mandrake, and run linux.bat from
a DOS prompt. You'll need to add "mem=3Dxxx" to linux.bat if=20
your system has more than 64 mb ram. Phat installs a 64 mb
swap.
I installed it to take a look at Mandrake. I had also
tried ZipSlack (similar to Phat, but a version of Slackware 4),
but was unable to get my 3dfx video card configured. With Phat
I had my V3 up and going right away.=20
I've since installed the 'regular' Mandrake 6. The Phat=20
version has almost everything the regular version does. After=20
running both, I can tell you there's no apparent differences=20
other than the 'real' Mandrake runs a little faster.=20

I wonder does it possible to run shockwave in Linux OS. If possible, it run
on Nestcape or Internet Explorer? Please give some guides on how to
implement it. And how the shockwave Plug-in works in Linux browser?
Please mail me (or cc) instead of post the reply to the newsgroup. I have
post this news to so many newsgroup so it is really trouble for me to check
from one newsgroup to another. Hope can receive your reply soon.
Thanks...

and do a ". /etc/rc.d/rc.local" (the space between . and / is
intentional) to activate the change ; exit the current
login session by using "exit" or "Ctrl D" to see new /etc/issue
in action .
what I mean by the above rant is that "Do not reboot your computer to
activate the changes!"
