In his obvious haste, Muzh <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> babbled thusly:
: bzip2 compresses about 30% more than gzip, resulting in smaller
: archives. Apart from that, I don't know --
bzip also requires about 9 Meg of memory to do maximum compression.
(That's why the compression is better. It uses a massive amount of memory as
a buffer and work area...)

Just put the remote terminals that you want to allow root to log in to in it.
typically these are ttyp*. To make sure that you'll be able to log in, put
several of them in that file in case some of them are being used in an X windows
session. A sample file would be:
% cat /etc/securetty
ttyp1
ttyp2
ttyp3
ttyp4
ttyp5
ttyp6
%
You don't have to stick with just 6 -- put as many terminals as you want.

.Xmodmap is actually the best approach, XKB ain't worth shit as the dead keys
don't work. You can use xkeycaps to create your own .Xmodmap. I updated it to
support the two French Canadian keyboards.

Well, if it is frozen at what RedHat 5.9 is we're in a fix. Better wait for
RedHat 6.1
After installing I've had core dump on all sound programs under X as well as all
of gnome's games. It is not ready for release unless major changes have been made
to 5.9.

To find out about -- MARK -- try the following:
man sysklogd
/MARK
To get rid of the "ppp-compress-*" add the following to /etc/conf.modules:
alias ppp-compress-26 ppp_deflate
alias ppp-compress-24 ppp_deflate

Hello Dustin,
Make sure "depmod -a" is run in one of your startup scripts (I am not
sure were OpenLinux keeps them).
If it is use "modprobe" instead of insmod. By using modprobe you can
probably disregard those unresolved symbol messages you get. modprobe
takes care of module dependacies.
I get a few unresolved symbols errors but those modules still work with
modprobe.

The filename is "Fig" and not "Xfig".
If you are using xfig.3.2.2, the file must contain
"Fig.version: 3.2.2".

No, the files (there are two) are named "Fig" and "Fig-color"
It sounds like you installed a new xfig but didn't install the app-defaults files
(by doing a "make install").
This is the only reason xfig would complain that you have old app-defaults files.
There is a version at the top of the Fig app-default file like this:
Fig.version: 3.2.3
Make sure it matches the version of xfig you are running.

The current thinking is probably to go with mySQL initially, while the
database is a bit smaller. As the database grows we then rethink the
decision and if necessary change to Oracle or some other commercial DBMS if
necessary.

Well, you're at odds with the majority of software designers, information
architects, and usability experts. If it were truly easier for everyone to
use a keyboard, we'd all still be using DOS. There's a good reason the Mac
took the world by storm in the eighties, and why MS subsequently bet the
farm on Windows.
Do you really think it's better to be locked into a CLI? Why not have the
option of either the mouse or keyboard at all times?
Mac and Windows still have the best UIs, which is what makes them more
usable for most people. Even if the underlying OS is crap, it's good enough
for most users. More demanding users will come to Linux for a more solid
OS, and put up with a clunky UI, if they can run the apps they need to get
their work done.

I used to play q2 on the net a lot on my P200,
and I wasn't even that bad ;)
The playability is comparable to that of windows, altough I noticed the
framerate is slight less. I also noticed the max mouse sensitivity is
quite
low compared to win, but I don't know if this is a q2 or
a linux problem.
A friend of mine also tried Quake 2 on a Silicon Graphics linux box
and he says it really rocks!
But overall, it's very playable :)

Unix *is* an IDE! Its power derives from its interoperability,

If you really want to get a feel for Unix, the best thing to do is
to find some high-powered programmer whose native language is Unix.
Find someone who has been at this for many years, and just watch them

Just a thought... maybe you can write a 'wrapper script' for rmdir, that logs
the user who invokes it (via 'whoami') and the directory being deleted to a
file in /var/log/delete.log (or whatever), then calls the appropriate rmdir
command, which you have renamed to something else (preferably obscure, if you
don't want users to immediately know you're doing this). Also, make the script
executable by all, but readable only by root, if you don't want others to know
the 'real' rmdir command. This isn't really foolproof, but it should do the job.
Good luck,

First come first serve, you pay all costs and provide shipping material
unless you want to risk mailing in an envelope (doesn't bother me, I
will never want them back so if they get there broken...well...:P). I
have exactly 1 copy of each. When Slackware 4.0 comes out I will have a
slackware 3.6 CD up for grabs :P
