That's by your definition of standard. Not real standards.

Why should he be using software *compiled for other distros*? Name a
piece of software that doesn't exist either as source or as rpm packages
for Red Hat.
Besides, Mandrake now uses gcc 2.96 too.

It can be used on everything else that looks like a computer and has a
compiler. Ever heard of source code?

How can one "pirate" free software? Please tell me. Else I have
misunderstood the GPL and the concept of free software.

No. Why should I mean that?

In this case it does.

It was better in many areas than gcc 2.95.x. It still is.
I doubt Mandrake would decide to use it for their entire 8.x series if
it wasn't.

So I should be forced to dissaminate every feature in detail, leaving
you to be able to spread the FUD with loaded and false statements like
"it's worse" and no details or backup for your statements?
If you want the details, go to http://www.bero.org/gcc296.html . Then
come back and we can have a proper discussion based on actual merits and
qualities.

trying to create!

I believe that your / may be too small. In any case, I think you should
try not making any partitions at all if you have problems with the
partitioning and a whole 15 GB disk to devote to this Linux
installation. Just choose "automatic partitioning" and let the installer
create the partitions (with the proper sizes) for you!

There is a good chance that when the DHCP server starts it might actually
write some of its debugging of version information into the
/var/log/messages. If you want to see all the data that is passed around you
will have to provide the "-d" flag to put the server into debug mode.

Is this run level 2 or run level 3?, I suppose it all depends on whether you

Yes. Under Red Hat 7.1, with kernel 2.4, you don't need kgcc. Compiling
kernel 2.4 works just fine with gcc 2.96.
kgcc is just if you, for some reason, want to replace kernel 2.4 on RH
7.1 with a 2.2 kernel compiled on your own.

What do you mean by "offscreen"? Here I am in KDE (just for you ;) and I can
move windows off screen. The old trick is moving them off the top of the
screen, but click right button on the window border and you can choose
"Move" the window is moveable to the limits of the pointer against the edges
of the desktop.
There is nothing in KDE that I can see that would stop someone moving a
window offscreen to get at a particular part of it that is currently
offscreen. Unless all window borders are off screen but there's even ways
round that.

I still have no idea what you're on about with this WM virtual desktop size.
Actually I do but I can't remember anything that does it (apart from
Enlightenment maybe but it's ages since I've used it).

You don't need kgcc on Red Hat Linux 7.1. Compiling kernel 2.4 works

You only need kgcc if you for some reason want to compile 2.2 kernels.

For a number of reasons, all due to security, when you download any file
across the internet or even merely transfer it by ftp across your own lan,
the executable bit of the file will be removed. And it is necessary to set
that executable bit in order to execute the file.

RH 7.0, TNT2 32megs, XFree86 4.0.1, oms-0.1.2. I'm getting terrific video
output using omi_gtk (well, at least it seems terrific, ~35fps) but no
audio whatsoever. Does anyone have any ideas as to info I should post to
get some help on this? I'm using KDE 2.1.1 with Alsa drivers for my ac97.
Audio in general (non-OMS dvd) is very good - no complaints at all. If I
could just get past this last hurdle. Had no luck with Xine - tried 2
versions. Perhaps this whole thing has just made me braindead.

I recommend that you download and install linux-2.4.4 kernel, paying
particular attention during configuration to implementing DMA on your hard
drives and making certain that you include the drivers for your particular
motherboards (via82cxxx). You only have to compile it once, you know.

Try turning off anti-aliasing and see if it makes a difference.
I read somewhere that in XFree86 4.0.3, the font information has to be
loaded each time you launch one of these apps. The next release should
introduce caching, and apps are supposed to load faster.

Ahhh, I think I get what you're on about now. Most WMs have multiple
workspaces and there aren't any I've found that won't let you move a window
'off screen' but you're talking about one giant *continuous* workspace with
the screen as a single sized window onto it.
Well, KDE doesn't do this. Neither do the majority of WMs I've just tried.
In fact the only ones that do it like you say are fvwm (2/95 dunno about 1),
AfterStep and some other, qvwm I think. Enlightnement tries but it's only
half way there in that it does this horizontally, but vertically it's the
same story.
This is with a few mins going through configs/settings for each one to see
what could be turned on so if any others do it it's not overly obvious.
KDE doesn't shine out as being bad by this standard at all, in fact the
majority of WMs work contrary to what you expect in this regards but not
*one* prevents you just dragging a window up/down/left/right outside the
edges of the desktop.
Your customer could have tried about a dozen different WMs and had the same
problem.
