Red Hat 6.1 is supposed to be a glibc-2.1 system. It seems that you have
not installed the (regular) libc development package(s). You appear to be
compiling using glibc-2.0.*.

Where are you logging in from?
It sounds like root login is disallowed on your system. On RedHat, I
know that console access is defined in the file
/etc/security/access.conf. You might try looking there. Usually root
login is disallowed from everything except the console, but it could be
it is denied from the console on your system as well.

I've been merrily making backups to a 100MB Iomega zip drive
(mounted under Linux as vfat) for quite a while, but recently
I've run into problems: when trying to restore stuff tar is
choking with "invalid compressed data--crc error".
This happens with all 4 disks I'm using. Suspecting the drive,
I booted Win98 and tried it from there: Winzip was able to
read the files OK. I tried recompiling kernel 2.2.14 using
gcc 2.7.2.3 instead of 2.95 but no change in tar's behavior.
In addition I'm sometimes seeing a filesystem panic on /dev/sda4
when trying to send new backup files to the zipdrive, with
complaints about "EOF not on block boundary".
Help! Anyone seen anything like this, or have any idea what
might be going on?

You can find many commands for Linux in Linux in a Nutshell from
O'Reilly & Associaties.
I don't know of a command that tells you who is fingering you. The
request is fulfilled by a finger daemon and happens outside of your
account. You can tell when someone reads your .plan file, and that
would let you know when you were being fingered. An interesting trick
based on this to automatically change your .plan file when read can be
found at:
http://www.twisted-helices.com/computing/plan/plan.html
It is also possible to tell the finger daemon to log finger requests.
That would give you more information on who is fingering you. Check out
the man pages for fingerd.

gnome/enlightenment as per redhat default, but with X 3.3.6 compiled from the

I've found that the trouble persists - i.e. logging out/rebooting still
leaves the problem, but that removing my .gnome*, .enlightenment, and related
(.e-conf, .gtkrc) directories "rectifies" the problem. I've also had this
happen mainly at times when I was copying/zipping/etc LARGE files, or
experiencing difficulties with network connections. It's almost as if gnome
is communicating through sockets and one of the sockets gets dropped.. although
I don't know why the problem would be persistent if that were the case.
I too have no clue as to what could be causing the problem.

Subject: Linux-Security
Date: Wed, 15 Mar 2000 20:41:06 GMT
I have a dual boot system Linux + NT, thus the system is using the
NTLDR. This is giving me a lot of trouble since it allows for security
leaks.
There are three problems:
1. I boot into Linux using single user mode and you can change the
root password. I have resolved this now by adding the following line to
the /etc/inittab file ~~:S:wait:/sbin/sulogin
2. A user can specify an alternate init program, as an example
try typing this in linux init=/bin/bash
This will get me into the root shell immediately. Which is a very
serious problem. In fact even adding the lines to
/etc/lilo.conf will not help due to the fact that this is a dual boot
machine. However works fine on a regular Linux RedHat system.
restricted
password=thisisthepassword
3. Specifying an alternate root partition can also be problematic, but
can be worked around restricting certain files only to root and read
access to the rest of the users. However a system with a seperate
filesystem with /tmp *filesystem* could still be vulnerable.
My greates problem is how to eliminate number "2", is there anyone who
has seen this before and can provide me with a solution.
The alternative would be a boot loader that would prompt a user for a
password if there is any typing done, and the tab is not used to select
the option. Does anyone know of such a boot loader, and where to find
it ?
One last question, can anyone post a URL where you find a bunch of
patches with an explanation ? Not a FTP site.
Thanks.

That would probably be MPPP (Multilink PPP). With MPPP you can turn
several PPP links into one single virtual link.
The place you are dialing to also has to support MPPP for this to work.
I don't remember the name off-hand, but I think there is an MPPP howto.
Have a look in /usr/doc/HOWTO, or see your local LDP mirror.

To turn several ethernet links into a single, you have to be connected
directly to a switch, and both the switch and your computer (eth drivers)
must talk the same "trunking" protocol.
Cisco has a proprietary protocol called EtherChannel. There is a patch
out there for the 2.2.x kernels (beowulf channel bonding stuff) that
adds this to Linux. I've never played with it so I don't know how hard
it is to get it running.
3Com, Bay and some other switch manufacturers use a different trunking
protocol, but I don't know if it is supported by Linux.

make zImage
the compiler runs until a error like the abowe hapends. Then I run make
zImage once more, and the compiler is able to compile a cuple of more files
and stops with a similar error message. It can not find the included file
(of coures - the file name has changed and gotten a wrong character like
lin}x/types.) Then I run make zImage once more, and I get one step further.
What can the problem be ?
