Does anyone have some example code to open the ppp0 interface and fetch
PPP stats?

The current code I have for 2.0.13 wouldn't even compile with 2.2.15, it
looks like
there were some major changes.

Could someone please help me, this information is needed to upgrade
XPPPConsole
to 2.2.x kernels.

RH 6.0 didn't detect most of my cards (scsi, network, modem, sound), even
if I entered the irq and address manually during install. I had to later
manually (using linuxconf) set up the network card which is now working.
but have yet to resolve and get working the scsi,modem,sound....

What a coincidence, I just picked up an US$80 NEC ATAPI ZIP drive.

I used CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEFLOPPY.

Well you need to get a kernel or module with CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEFLOPPY.

Zeroing out a fresh disk which came with a macintosh FS, I get a strange
error:
kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev 16:41 (hdd), sector 196544
kernel: hdd: The drive reports both 100663296 and 100646912 bytes as its capacity

The DOS partition table comes in with the right sizes.

>
>However, if I format as
>mke2fs /dev/hdc4

Then you're letting the driver decide how big the partition can be,
and the driver gets the wrong answer. Do this:

mke2fs -c -m0 /dev/hdc4 98270

or whatever number you get with wc /dev/hdc4 or
dd conv=noerror if=/dev/hdc4 of=/dev/null bs=1k

>So the default mke2fs, which reserves 5% of disk space, does

The 95% user space has nothing to do with it. Your mkfs
was just writing past the end of the media because the
driver gave it the wrong size.

>However, if I then do
>mount -t ext2 /dev/hdc4 /mnt/zipln

This will only work if there was a directory /mnt/zipln
when you started.

>There is some mention of problems with fdisk and DOS 6.0 in the man

Fdisk is broken. Use cfdisk if you can't live with it.

>Can anybody else duplicate this behaviour on built in ZIP drives?

Once you know the media size they work great.

Wie ich neulich erfahren habe, hat Linux auch mit dem K7 (Athlon) keine
Probleme, das System muss weder angepasst noch optimiert werden. Was bei
solch neuen Systemen aber unter Linux problematisch sein kann, ist
manchmal die Ultra-DMA-=DCbetragung f=FCr die Festplatte. Hier muss man h=
in
und wieder von Hand gewisse Dinge manipulieren, um optimale Performance
herauszubekommen. Das hat mit dem AMD K7 aber herzlich wenig zu tun.

I'm not sure about gdm, but you can kill xdm with CTRL-R,
which will leave you at the text "login:" prompt. From
there, a CTRL-ALT-DELETE should shutdown the machine.

If you really want something like Microsoft's Network Neighborhood, you
should download LinNeighborhood. This is a very nice X11 application,
which lists all computers in your Samba network. You can see a
computer's share list just by double-clicking on the copmutername.
Mounting file shares is easy, too. Do a double-click on the share you
want to be mounted and type in your username and password, that's all.
Then you can browse the share using your usual file manager (such as
TkDesk, xfm etc.).

You can find the tool at www.linuxapps.com, section Network, Samba.
Make sure you've GTK installed on your system!

Norbert

Haha funny you ask, I just applied for a job at Lucent Netherlands wich develop
the WaveLan products, they solely provide Windows Drivers for the WaveLan Cards.
But when I ge in, I will use the info to right Linux drivers asswell. What you
can do for now, is use the WaveLAN wireless bridge technology. This is a
MAC layer bridge that connets to your LAN and talks to another point with a
WireLess bridge. We have used this for MUMPS servers than needed to export LAT
from 2 sites it works great. And their are now drivers for MUMPS ;) at all.

My notes:
(a) after you delete the Win partition, you'll have three primary
    partitions to use,
(b) you want to have 3 partitions, so why not make them primary?
(c) unless you have a 2.0.x kernel, your swap partitions need not
be bounded by the 127MB limit (I have a 1G swap on one
    partition),
(d) so you really need only 2 partitions.

To summarize, it's probably possible to do *exactly* what you
outlined, but it's less dangerous and experimental, and quicker
to simply use 2 primary partitions.

first Windows I used was 3.0 or 3.1 in 1991; the very first versions

It's built in to perl.

perl -d

Or, from within emacs, Esc-x perldb
It's nice within emacs because it splits the window into two frames and
follows along in the source code in the 2nd frame

man perldebug:

If you invoke Perl with the -d switch, your script runs
under the Perl source debugger. This works like an
interactive Perl environment, prompting for debugger
commands that let you examine source code, set
breakpoints, get stack backtraces, change the values of
variables, etc. This is so convenient that you often fire
up the debugger all by itself just to test out Perl
constructs interactively to see what they do.

Subject: Re: <<<Lets face it...Linux is for geeks like u n me>>>

I am a user of both Microsoft Windows and Red Hat Linux on a dual boot
system - and I have to say that whilst I try to use Linux more and more
nowadays, I am still unwilling to completely erase Windows from my system.
I have to agree with the thousands that Linux is faster, more flexible, FREE
(a huge advantage), and offers much more choice. However, until there is
truly a system which can be used with real ease, I do not see Linux ever
overtaking the Windows market.

For a fact I know that many computer users are not computer literate. Many
think Windows IS the computer, and whilst you may say this is simply pure
ignorance - they cannot be blamed for the fact that not many people have had
the opportunity to use anything else, with most schools reluctant to install
Linux (- take mine for example). Although Windows may crash a lot, programs
are still easy to install, easy to upgrade, and are aesthetically pleasing
to use. We must not overlook the fact that Gnome also crashes though, and
even though a simple 'Ctrl + Alt + Backspace' does the trick its still a
fact that it crashes. If you read my other post today, you can see what
problems I had upgrading Apache...

Microsoft products may cost money, may be prone to security problems - but
there's none of that manual configuration stuff which I have to do in Linux.
A nice graphical Linuxconf may come eventually, as might the fully automated
installation program that doesn't require you to download a million
libraries before you can compile it -- but until that day comes, Linux is
still my secondary OS.

I guess that depends on how you are notified of the number change. I am
still setting up my free access, but I know I have to log in to get to a
web page with the numbers. I think I need to look at wget (to download)
and expect (to handle the login).

If you are using pppconfig, I would think there is no option but to

I can only agree with you. If you don't do nonsensical spiffy stuff,
GNOME is fast. It's so fast it zorches.

#1 on the list of nonsensical spiffy stuff that can arbitrarily slow
GNOME down is of course using a pixmap-based GTK+ theme.

#2 is using Enlightenment as your window manager with a huge theme
(1280x1024 TrueColour backgrounds, enormous amounts of graphics in
borders and buttons, stuff like that)

_Braveheart_? I think I'd take any film over _Braveheart_ anytime.
Especially _Judge_Dredd_. It's almost the same film. Perhaps they just
did some postprocessing on _Braveheart_ to produce it. Or was it the
other way 'round? -- mawa
