If you're asking what distributions have a "whole bunch of prepackaged
stuff so that you don't have to spend your time maintaining them," then
the answer is that whichever ones most diminish the time you have to spend
on maintenance are likely preferable to those that provide less assistance
with this.

I guess it begs the question:

-> Do you want some minimal assistance with this?
If so, then virtually _ANY_ distribution will suffice.

-> Do you want a hack-it-yourself distribution, that provides _no_
   assistance with system management?
If so, then you really aren't asking the right questions.
You should be asking which variation on Slackware you should be
   using.

OK, so you're using a PPTP VPN. You'll need a client to
be able to connect to it.

I can't tell you how to set it up, but it's probably

7.1 uses 'grub' or you can specify 'lilo'. Neither have the

From: David Steuber <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I have the Gateway Solo 5150 laptop computer running kernel 2.2.16 and
pcmcia-cs 3.1.16. Occasionally, when I am xfering data over the
network ( 3COM 575B pcmcia NIC ), the networking services freeze up
quite hard. The only cure is to open up cardmanager and reset the
NIC.

david@solo:> /sbin/lsmod
Module Size Used by
3c575_cb 19948 2
cb_enabler 2280 2 [3c575_cb]
ds 6728 2 [cb_enabler]
i82365 23612 2
pcmcia_core 47680 0 [cb_enabler ds i82365]

Either there is a bug in pcmcia-cs, the driver for the NIC, or the NIC
has a hardware bug. How do I find out which it is? I suppose the bug
could also be in the kernel or NFS.

This problem has existed for all earlier kernels that I have used in
the 2.2.x and 2.0.36 series. I have used earlier versions of
pcmcia-cs as well. In some cases, I used the versions as they came
from SuSE, and others I have been using my own builds. I am currently
running SuSE 6.2 and my own compiled kernel and pcmcia-cs.

The compiler makes no difference either.

This bug has a high probability of occuring when I am listening to
music over the lan. My other machine has a larger HD, so I keep my
mp3 files there, but I occasionally play them on the laptop and listen
with headphones. I use NFS to mount the disks from the other machine.

I have on occasion moved large amounts of data over the network, using
NFS, without problem. This is one of those 'intermitent' bugs.

Any useful suggestions that help track down and kill the culprit will
be gratefully accepted.

you're right, the driver for NTFS is quite alpha 'til now. I have a dual
boot system running here with NT 4 and Linux.
I dared to install the NTFS read/write access. Without any problems. I
guess you might find your files permissions messed up somehow but I never
expirienced any damage to my NTFS partition. Only one thing: Don't forget
to unmount it properly.
Anyway: The file is already damaged. So you've got nothing to lose ...

One problem I noticed it that Linux dump ONLY dumps complete filesystems, even
though the man page says it dumps filesystems and directories!

I've got everything on one partition (/usr /home /etc...), but I only
want to backup /home. Is there an easy way to do this?

BTW, I also discovered that TAR has a 2GB file limit!!! So I can't use
this one either...

Any help is appreciated,

Hi,

I am pretty new to Linux. I have installed Mandrake 7.1 (linux 2.2.14)
When I connect to the net (Freewwweb is the ISP) using a 56K modem and
kppp, the connection tells me it connected at 50K. But when I bring up
netscape, it takes 5 minutes to load http://www.linux-mandrake.com !!!
It takes that much time, for almost any site on net.

I tried tuning my irqs (giving higher interrupt for the modem) it still
didn't imporove much. Is there anything I can do to get atleast 28.8 ?
I have a P-III w/128MB ram.

Thanks!

nfs-utils is not an NFS server -- it's simply the tools that work with
knfsd. Kaz is correct -- you need to enable kernel NFS server support.

but when I try to play mp3s with xmms, it gives me the same error it did

If someone could tell me how to detect the setup or if there's something

I'm about to get one of those laptop thingies and I was wondering
how feasible it is to use X without the mouse. All I really want
to do is have access to an xterm and an editor. The editor is
an X only editor and can't be used in console mode.

Does anybody have experience in this?

Can window managers be configured to behave intelligently without
mouse input? I'm currently using a highly configured fvwm95 (ie
remove the task bar etc).

Thanks in advance

I am using fvwm95 and sometimes with the wrong mouse (PS/2 v. Serial).
I can't change the mouse type, since I am running it off a cd. As long
as you have at lease one xterm upon startup, you can start additional
xterms from it and background them (&). You can Alt-Tab between xterms
as well.

I have one HD with one FAT32 partition which has Win98 and the ZipSlack
version of SlackWare. When using the kernel image that came with zipslack,
if boots using umsdos perfectly. Then I downloaded and compiled the
2.3.99-pre9 experimental kernel, and enabled all the relevant filesystem
kernel options (saying Y not Module to UMSDOS and msdos fs and FAT support).

When I try to boot using loadlin like I did with the previous kernel:

C:\LINUX> LOADLIN bzimage root=/dev/hde1 rw

... I get something like this near the end of the kernel messages:

VFS mounted root /dev/hde1 (msdos filesystem)

whereas the previous kernel said "(umsdos filesystem fast msdos)" and had
the umsdos initialization messages right above that line

then at the very end it says it can't find the INIT and craps out with
kernel panic.

now, this leaves me asking, what extra configuration do i need besides
enabling UMSDOS in the kernel to get it to work?

Try the package mpfun or mpfun++:

mpfun++ A C++ implementation of MPFUN. The package
                        performs multi-precision floating point
arithmetic with arbitrary precision level. It
takes advantage of C++ operator overloading and
argument matching facility to provide a smooth
                        transition from primitive arithmetic types.

Go to http://www.google.com/linux and do a search on mpfun.

It is possible. I have seen this question come up a number of times on the

So, at which point during the installation should I mount it? Should
I allow the installation program to really copy the files to there?
As there should really be no need to copy the files to there again,
can I skip this step somehow?

I am using three nics for three networks. (Fairly large network at home)

One is for my DSL connection and I will be using IPCHAINS for filtering...I
hope.

Anyone have a preference of IPFILTER over IPCAHINS? Why? Vice versa? Why?

One is for an internal network that I would like to access the internet, but
not all the time. I will be performing a "down" and "up" on this network
card when I need this network to access the internet. Unless someone knows
of a better idea.
The other is for my systems that I would like to always have connected to
the internet.

I haven't had much time to work on this since my last post because of a
project I'm involved in, but I should get more time at it this evening. I
would be happy to see just two NICs work and I am very close to just putting
in different vendors for each network card, but what kind of IT pro would I
be if I did that?? That is like cheating to me. Nah, I'll be sticking this
one out until it works. I'm documenting all along the way so that I can see
my shortcoming and not duplicate it.

What distribution are you building your box with? (Curiousity)

That's funny. The dump that I use which ships with RedHat 6.2 seems to
dump just what I told it to. So if you just want to dump /home/a_user
you can do that. I did notice, however, when I did a subsequent compare
with "restore -C" that restore complained about other items in the file
system being missing from the tape. An annoyance, but liveable...
