Subject: RH 6.0 For Sparc Hardware Requirements ?
Date: Wed, 21 Apr 1999 20:25:45 GMT
We currently run a web server on a Sun Sparcstation 20 using Redhat Linux 4.2
for Sparc. We believe this release is *not* Y2K compliant, and intend to buy
an upgrade to address that. Our preferred commercial Redhat supplier doesn't
currently stock Redhat 5.2 for Sparc, but say they *will* stock Redhat 6.0
for Sparc when it's released (any week now).
Lately I've seen reports that RH 6.0 will cost more than previous releases,
and uses kernel 2.2.x, so I'm starting to wonder whether this release will
need a chunkier bit of hardware to run on. The Sparcstation currently has 32
Mb RAM.
Does anyone know whether this will run RH 6.0 as happily as it has been
running 4.2 ?
Thanks,
Nick Boyce

Hi,
The file you're looking for is called XF86Config and you'll find it in
/etc.
It is a very good idea to take a backupcopy of that file once you've got X
up and running. Put it on a floppy. That way you'll always have a working X
configuration at hand if something should go wrong.

Many modern modems offer data compression using general purpose
algorithms. However, if you can predict the data content, you can
develop better specific purpose algorithms. For example, MPEG offers
better data compression for moving pictures than the general purpose
algorithms used in modems, and it also offers some hope of
resynchronising if any data gets missed out or corrupted.
dxpc is a class of compressor that is aware of the nature of an X data
stream and it uses that intelligence to provide compression. It should
do a better job than pure general purpose data compression.
The LBX extension (Low Bandwidth X) is also intended to reduce traffic.
I have never tried a combination of LBX and dxpc... that might be an
interesting experiment.
Cheers, JeremyC.

Hi,
"man X" describes the use of the XENVIRONMENT shell parameter and
explains that by default, it looks for ${HOME}/.Xdefaults-${hostname} .
I think this is what you want.

I know what you mean... I write code all day long using VFP6.0 on Win95
and even stepping carefully through the land-mines I still crash several
times each day.
I've had KDE running on my SuSE box since it came out beta last
September and have coded and compiled numerous programs. KDE hung only
once, and that was my fault. "Features" aren't of any value if one

Try going into your home directory and deleting all of the .gnome, .gtk
directories and files that you see there. Set your desktop up again and
see if it is more stable.
I have been using the latest version (1.08) of Gnome and find it to be
very stable.

cdrecord is quite capable of working in a pipe and writing the CD as
mkisofs generates the file system.
The man page even has examples of how to do it.

I have a number of desktop PCs with IDE hard disks in removable
racks. The racks have a passive IDE connection and do not claim to be
hot-swap capable.
Can I hot-swap with these drives? Kernel 2.0.xx has a config option
for removable IDE interfaces, and mentions an external utility to do the
job... Maybe something like sync; umount /dev/hdxx to umount, or maybe
fiddling with hdparm?
Any help welcome...

Hello,
I have recently downloaded the files necessary to upgrade to
kernel-2.2.5. I am using Redhat 5.2. I have a problem I can't figure
out. When I compile the kernel without module support everything goes
fine and I can boot up the new kernel (At boot up I can see that the new
kernel is installed). Unfortunately the kernel is rather large (I have
to compile using make bzImage) and so I want to compile the kernel with
module support. When I do this and try to boot up the system I get the
following messages:
request_module[block-major-8]: Root fs not mounted
VFS: Cannot open root device 08:08
Kernel panic: ---
I have checked the Changels file and I have all the appropriate versions
of the programs listed.
Also, I believe I am following the appropriate sequence for compiling
namely,
make xconfig -- then choose complete
make dep
make clean
make zlilo
make modules
make modules_install
then run lilo after placing vmlinuz in /boot and appropriately changing
/etc/lilo.conf
Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Eusebio

When in doubt, read your local friendly minicom manpages, paying attention
to the command line options; from a set:
-m Override command-key with the Meta or ALT key. This
can also be configured in one of minicom's menus, but
if you use different terminals all the time, of which
some don't have a Meta or ALT key, it's handy to set
the default command key to Ctrl-A and use this option
when you have a keyboard supporting Meta or ALT keys.
Minicom assumes that your Meta key sends the ESC pre-
fix, not the other variant that sets the highest bit
of the character.
-M Same as -m, but assumes that your Meta key sets the
8th bit of the character high (sends 128 + character
code).
Between these two, I haven't found a keyboard yet that didn't know what it
should do.

Hi, folks.
I've tried replacing my 2.2.1 kernel with 2.2.5 on a RedHat

My 2.2.1 kernel could detect the line printer and the parallel

cannot, When I boot 2.2.5 I get scsi: 0 hosts message and
mesages about not being able to load the ppa.o and lp.o modules

Clearly, I've missed something and I can't figure out what
it is.
If I do lsmod, I see that parport, parport_pc and parport_probe

Can anyone give me some ideas on what to check next? I'm at

hi,
nothing to add to the question except that they are perfectly recognized at

but i can't mount them.
i typed:
mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
and
mount -t ??? /dev/sda4 /mnt/zip

mount -t auto /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
...of course the dirs were created beforehand
i typed it in a kvt terminal, the cursor goes to the next line and then
nothing happens (i have to close the window with the cross)
seems to be the same in console mode.
what can i do as i assume that i'm typing the right commands.
moreover my 2 hds mount both with
mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/hdc ....etc.
work perfectly well and load in fstab at the beginning.
