I have previously posted a very similar message in
comp.os.linux.hardware, so forgive me if you have read this already.
I will now post this question to general linux sites, in quest of the
caveats that may be overlooked when browsing the manufacturers'
websites.
Has any one experienced any issues regarding this combination?
I have several distros lying around here, so there is no
preference other than supporting sound and 3d applications
and maybe the second monitor out put to T.V.
(currently I am writing this from a win32 partition due to a cisco 605
dsl card- patiently waiting on the alternative o.s. friendly cisco
675)
some additional hardware that will go in is:
ram: at least 2 (Micron/ST 128M PC100 8ns)
Soundblaster pci128 + interact propad 6
3com etherlink 3c905b ethernet card
possibly a scsi card with symbios 53C875 chip, the kouwell 801v75
usb(?) devices: 1. efilm reader-4 (for smartmedia cards from camera)
2. Wacom Graphire 4x5 tablet (pen&mouse)
serial devices: 1. camera's uplink should the usb reader
fail- a
FUJI MX1200 model digital camera
2. a management port for the cisco 675
parallel devices: hp deskjet 600c printer
I realize that the camera may not really be an integrated device, but
I use it quite often.
the scsi card is listed as a "possible" because my server will be
using it, but ya never know...
this will be my "play" machine with multiple oses installed
namely:
Amiga dev hosted on linux
Amiga dev hosted on Win32
BeOs 5 personal edition
Freedos and bad seal interface
Gnu/linux with gnome interface
QNX RTP
ide devices are probably not important to list but they are:
a teac cdW54e with firmware 1.0x 4x4x32
a 36.5 gb hard drive - Maxtor 93652u8 (udma 66)
another hard drive, the model number escapes me at the moment
in the near future I may add some more hard drives (ata 100) to deal
with video and multimedia output using Broadcast2000 when it matures a
little bit more

Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2001 03:41:22 GMT
i'd like to automount my mail server's /var/spool/mail to a local
machine's /var/spool/mail and i have my auto.master setup
as:
/var/spool auto.mail --timeout 60
and my auto.mail as
mail -rw,soft,bg mail:/var/spool/mail
and it does mount /var/spool/mail, however all the other directories
under /var/spool disappear. ie, lpd etc do not show
up.
Is there a way to correct this very undesirable behaviour?
cheers.

Yes, mount it somewhere else and make /var/spool/mail a symbolic link
to the mount point.
Be aware that NFS mounted mail spools aren't the safest things in the
world; at the very least, Sun suggests using noac or actimeo=0 in the
NFS options (see /etc/init.d/sendmail -- this script issues a critical
syslog message if it is NFS mounted without one of these options).
IMAP and POP may be worth looking into.

This is my preferred usage. My desktop size is 1152x864 while
my screen resolution is normally at 640x480... though I often use
512x384 to "zoom in" to make an xterm full screen size.
(some games force me to "zoom out" to 1024x768)
Why anyone would want his desktop limited to screen size is
incomprehensible to me.
One way to "fix" it is to edit the appropriate screen section
of your XF86Config file to put your maximum resolution first
in the "Modes" line. Then when you startx, that resolution,
1024x768 will be come up as your default, and also having a
desktop size of 1024x768 will mean your entire desktop will fit
within the confines of your screen. Of course, everything will
be tiny.
Another approach is to try <alt><ctrl><keypad +> until you
get to the screen resolution you like.

I did the same thing when I installed a new hard drive one time. It
wouldn't boot without a floppy. What it was was I forgot to go into the
bios and detect the new hard drive. After that it booted up fine.

If you have an external DSL "modem", there's nothing to it. The "modem" is
nothing more than a router. Normally, the default settings on the router
should be fine, though you may have to configure it. As far as Linux is
concerned, there is no configuration whatever, except for DNS and gateway
addresses which should be supplied by your ISP.
The real issue is security. You will want to set up your Linux box as a
firewall. There are pre-packaged firewalls available, or you can roll your
own. I recommend the former, unless you have substantial experience with
ipchains and firewalling.
If your ISP actually "requires" you to use their software, then they are
not providing you with direct Internet access, but a path to the Internet
through their proprietary "portal". If this is the case, I suggest you
find another ISP.

The 'L' is from the first stage loader. When it finishes, it puts out 'I'.
So the first stage loader never completed loading the second stage loader.
Does your disk have BIOS support? What device code is it on? (0x80, 0x81).
I am not familiar with your controller; so I can only tell you what the series
of 'L' s mean. (The first stage loader would be re-trying with each 'L'.)
Not sure what the ultimate cause might be.

Eric,
Second thoughts.
Eliminate 'linear'. Let LILO do the mapping of disk geometry. And be sure
the BIOS and LILO report the same Cylinders/Heads/Sectors.
The utility diskette with the LILO distribution ("make floppy") will help with
this diagnosis. Get more information from the boot installation with:
/sbin/lilo -v <n> n = 1.. 5

Subject: iptables & 2.4.0
Date: Thu, 25 Jan 2001 23:29:23 -0600
Greetings,
I've run into a problem with firewalling under the 2.4.0 kernel on Red
Hat 6.2 .
My build of the kernel went smoothly. I compiled in the option for
NetFilter so that I could use iptables. Under the NetFilter
configuration options, I selected everything as modules except ipchains
and ipfwdm(?) support. After kernel installation I downloaded the
iptables package and installed it.
>From what I understand, that is all I need to do. However, when I try
to test iptables with a rule specified towards the loopback device
(iptables -A INPUT -s 127.0.0.1 -p icmp -j DROP...test as seen in the
iptables HOWTO), I get the following error message:
"iptables v1.2: can't initialize iptables table `filter': iptables who?
(do you need to insmod?)Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be
upgraded."
Now, I have checked and double checked my kernel configuration to make
sure it is correct--I've recompliled the kernel at least twice since
encountering this problem. And like I said, all the proper options for
NetFilter support seem to be in place. The 'support for NetFilter'
option under "networking" in xconfig is set to 'Y' and all NetFilter
config options (expcept the 2 specified above) were selected as
modules. Of course, all modules were built and installed after 'make
bzImage' at kernel compilation.
One interesting thing to note is that when I run the 'lsmod' command, I
see no modules loaded that seem to relate to packet filtering. Are
there modules that I need to manually install in order to get iptables
to work? If so, what are they? The error message seems to indicate that
some modules need to be loaded, but I thought the modules made for the
kernel were "loaded on demand" and that I didn't need to do anything.
I've searched newsgroups, read the iptables HOWTO, etc. but I've had no
luck figuring this problem out. I would very much appreciate any advice
on this issue.
Thanks in advance to all who reply

True, but if you are running the same version of the programs it is
exploiting then it could possibly be turned on other distro's as well if
the code was changed. Even a CRACKER might exploit it which would be
worse yet.
Care to risk it??

Look in /var/log/* directoies for a whole whole mass of files. You have

The last file of the archive was truncated. The archive was made from the
contents
of a directory. I added one file to the directory, which became the new last
file.
I recreated the archive. This time it got past the orignal last file, but
reported
I/O errors when it got to the new last file which was truncated. The previous
last
file extracted okay, but the current last file did not.
This second attempt should have caused the tape to run past the spot where it
had
stopped last time. This appears to indicate that it wasn't a bad spot on the
tape.
I made a third attempt to make the archive, but this time I changed the blocking
factor. On previous attempts, I had used the default which, according the the
info
pages is 20. On this last attempt I used a blocking factor of 128 and tar
reported
no errors when creating the archive, but it still "shoe shines" for a few
minutes
when it gets to the last file before verifying.
