Subject: Floppy boot to linux-only scsi hardrive on Win95 PC?
Date: Sun, 04 Jul 1999 14:56:31 -0400
Hi folks, Is it a luxury to have a seperate disk dedicated to each OS
(95 & Linux) or am I just over-complicating things? Please tell me if
you have a better idea to accomplish this:
I have an old Acer Aspire P-90 Win95 PC.
The original IDE 1Gig hard drive is FULL of all Win95 stuff I'd like to
keep as-is; SO I have installed an Adaptec 1502 SCSI controller with a
Quantum XP32150 2Gig hard drive.
* I think I want the SCSI hard drive dedicated to Linux and the IDE hard
drive remain dedicated to Win95.
* I want the ability to transfer files between the two drives.
* I don't want to swap hardware to boot the other OS.
What's the best way to have both OSs co-exist?:
Can LILO be installed on my original drive, but most of Linux on the
SCSI drive? I have 10-50 MB I could give-up on the Win95 disk.
Boot from floppy when I want Linux running from SCSI hard drive?
Install a boot manager?
Which one? Any risks to my Win95 disk? Free?
Thanks in advance for your help/suggestions!
-John
PS: Please save the "Why keep 95 at all?" comments for another time. I
agree. Once I verify Linux works with ALL my hardware and teach my wife
Linux basics, I may ditch 95 altogeather.

i've figured it out. i had decided along the way that i didn't like that
users could read the /etc/passwd file. after i changed the file to mode
600, users' prompts stated "i have no name!@host". also, a startx
would not work correctly. i changed the /etc/passwd file back to 644 and
it now works. don't say duh, i'm new to all this.
if anyone cares to elaborate on all this, i'd love to hear more about how
all this works.
thanks in advance,

Most--maybe all--ibm-pc-clone bios cannot see above the 1024
cylinder. So all your /boot must be within this limit (typically,
this is 5-10 megs?). Suse is trying to keep you from wasting time
installing the program somewhere it cannot run from (without some
"kludge" like loadlin from an operating system installed low enough
that the bios can see it. All you need below is 1024 is /boot, or
/--if you have room.

Subject: CD-ROM Date Bug
I have noticed a problem with the ATAPI CD_ROM driver under Linux
recently.
If I use 'ls --full-time /mnt/cdrom' to list the contents of the root
directory on the
CD-ROM (or any directory on the CD-ROM for that matter), the time
displayed
for all of the files and directories is incorrect. I have listed the
same directory under
OS/2 and DOS and the file times agree for those two systems. However,
under Linux
the file times displayed are incorrect by 3 hours. A file time displayed
as 1:15 pm
under OS/2 and DOS is listed as 16:15 under Linux. The times for files
on the hard disk
and floppies are correct. Just the file times for the CD-ROM are
incorrect. The 3 hours
added by Linux to all file times couldn't be the GMT correction, since
that should be
4 hours - and why a GMT correction (or any "correction") would be added
to file times
is suspect. Since the file times for the hard disk and floppies are
correct, I have to assume
that the CD-ROM driver under Linux has a bug. Since both OS/2 and DOS
agree (2 out of 3)
I assume that the Linux driver as the odd man out is incorrect.
I am using Red Hat 5.2, the CD-ROM is an IDE ATAPI drive.
Is this a known bug and if so is there an updated driver? I don't
necessarily need the
corrected driver myself as yet, but I need to know if this problem is
known and or corrected.

Remember the famous Internet Worm?
Remember that one of the holes it used was in sendmail?
Did you know *why* that hole was in sendmail in the first place?
So the sendmail author could get root on his main test machine, where he
didn't have the root password.
Yes, the hole was deliberate. He just forgot to take it out again for
release.
Now why is it I won't ever trust sendmail or it's author again ...
Oh, and there is this story about the hole in login that is put there by a
hole in cc so you won't ever see it in the source ... IIRC you can search
for a title like "reflections on trusting trust" or something like that.

I run a duel boot acer 120mhz - 16mbyte ram - I have 2.0 under windows 95
and 1.1.7 under Linux. I write my programs on the Linux side and pass them
to and from the windows side via a windows partition. The programs run a
lot better and faster on the Linux side. The builds go a lot faster also. I
have a program- a fairly complex financial planner- that I converted to
Java. It does a lot of computations. The difference in the speed between C
and Java is remarkable. Soon 'll get me a 400+ machine and maybe the
difference won't be so noticible. I was thinking about marketing the Java
version but anyone with an older machine would be sending me hate mail.

General comments:
OK, assuming that your BIOS boots from the first IDE drive (your old
drive), your best option is to install LILO on the MBR of the IDE
drive. You can include options to boot Win95 and Linux. If you don't
want to mess with the MBR, then you can install LILO on a floppy.
Then Win95 will boot by default and you can use the floppy to boot
Linux.

LILO can be located entirely on the MBR. No need to mess with your
Win95 partition(s).

Um... LILO?
It is possible to loose the partition information for a drive when
rewriting the MBR and this is a risk when installing LILO there
(though I've never personally heard of it happening). If you are
squeamish about this, start with lilo on a floppy. Then once you have
Linux up and running, look at the lilo docs (actually they are an
excellent intro to basic disk concepts in general). Figure out how to
back up the current MBR and how to restore the backup if there is a
problem.

No, this actually *simplifies* things.

You might really want to get a better SCSI controller. You need a
controller with a BIOS to boot an O/S off it -- I don't know if the 1502
has a BIOS or not. Linux uses the 'AHA-152x' driver.

Should not be a problem.

So long as the partitions on /dev/hda are FAT16, Linux will happily
mount them. Warning: RedHat Linux defaults to mounting them as 'msdos',
with 8.3 file names with no gid, uid, or umask values in the fstab file
in /etc. This is fixable -- you just need to edit /etc/fstab and
re-mount the drives.

No need.

Yes, LILO will be happy to live in the MBR of /dev/hda. You won't need
to do anything to the Win95 partition. This assumes that the SCSI card
has BIOS support. Make sure it is set to assign drive letters to all
drives, not just the first 1-2 (I am not sure if this matters with only
1 IDE and 1 SCSI, but if you add either another IDE drive (or if you
have a IDE CD-ROM drive), it might. So long as your SCSI controller has
a BIOS on it, you won't need to mess with your Win95 file system, just
installing LILO in its MBR.

You can do this, if you prefer, but it is a bit of a pain -- lose the
boot floppy and you are screwed...

LILO is a free (simple) boot manager. Comes with Linux. LILO can boot both
Linux and Win95.
