The old QIC-02 adapters are supported by Linux. At least I found a
module with the drivers in my RedHat installation. I don't know how
well it works.

1 - beta means not ready for prime time, use at your own risk.
2 - try reinstalling, pay close attention to what packages failed
during
the install, be sure to create a boot disk.

Such problems can occur if you're freq/viewmode settings are incorrect. Try
to find a
XF86Config file for your board/screen. Lots of distributions have tools to
configure/test.

I have to say it. Those packages _may_ have been very important. The
fact they had errors is usually an indication that something is wrong.
What were the error messages? What were the packeages?

[ker-snap! Hideous error messages and other scary stuff...]

Something else which struck me when I first read your message was the
line:

"I choose linux and I get this error and the laptop freezes..."

Key word being 'laptop'. As far as I'm aware, laptop hardware support is
usually quite low-down on a devoloper's list of priorities, since many
laptop parts are vendor-specific. Also, in a direct quote from
Mandrake's website:

"MandrakeSoft is happy to announce the new Beta (Beta 3) of the
upcoming
   7.2 release: Ulysses.
Please keep in mind that Ulysses is an experimental Operating System,
it's not for daily use! The goal of beta testing is to help debug it
and
Ulyssesn is sure to contain things that are broken. Use with care!"

So - you are now officially a beta tester. You accepted that things may
not work - and surprise-surprise - they don't. That is what being a beta
tester is about. Form a bug report, and then read:

http://www.linux-mandrake.com/bugs/Reporting.html

and perhaps you should then send your bug to Mandrake. :-) Well done for
making the world a better place.

Now, for your actual problem. I would suggest you obtain a *stable*
release of Mandrake (currently 7.1), and try that. If that doesn't work,
read this 'Linux on Laptops' site and see if there is any specific
information on your particular make and model:

http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/kharker/linux-laptop/

That is about the best advice I can offer. :-)

Cheers,

Dave. :-)

Hi,

This is for home use (ADSL) so I'm not looking for Pentagon security,
but is it completely insane to use a Linux box both for firewalling AND
web services like http, ftp and mail server?
I'm thinking of binding the services only to the private/inner network
adapter and only opening up the necessary ports to the outside/public
network adapter via the firewall software? In addition to the web
services that are accessible from the outside/Internet, I also need
telnet, Samba and X to be accessible from my private network.

I know that the less amount of code you run on the firewall the safer
you are, but as I said, I'm not Pentagon, or even commercial.

Thanks in advance!

I think you are right. In the Oracle install document, this stuff all
takes place in the section "Tasks to perform as the Oracle user", so
naturally, I was trying all of this as Oracle, not root.

After posting the question last night (about an hour after 8-)), I
tried "xhost +" as root, and voila! It said anyone could log in from
anywhere.

They need to make the docs a little clearer.

Thanks for your help.

The KRN in Suse 6.4 is probably still 0.6.0, which is 18 months old. You
should try 0.6.12 instead. You can get it from
http://krn.sourceforge.net.

The RPM will probably not work, but you can build your own out of the
src.rpm.

Depends.

If you need http and ftp to be visible to the outside world, you might as
well. The argument can be made that securing one box would be easier then
securing two(firewall and web server, for instance).

If it ONLY needs to be visible to the inside network, then placing it on a
separate machine from the firewall would be a good idea. THat way, remote
exploits for the http/ftp servers would be pretty much blocked from the
outside world.

Also, with the two harddrives that mentioned above, I created a RAID 1

according to the results from "hdparm -t" and bonnie++, the performance of
the array is even worse than the slow drive by itself! Can someone tell me
what is wrong with my setup? What I want from RAID is read performance,
does RAID1 provide the best performance boost or should I switch to

Perhaps your right. lnx4win does sound like the culprit here. I have
installed LM 7.0 on another machine with no problems. That's why I came
back to put 7.1 on this laptop. I didn't have to use lnx4win last time.
So, I'll take your suggestion and try autoboot.bat and give that a shot
and post the results.

CORRECTION: lnx4win is a Piece Of Shit!! :)

How do you know it's 512 Mb? Do you deduce it from the array sizes,
from e.g. 'top' or from some warning/error message? Are you sure it's
not a limit in the compiler? Does the operating system recognize the
whole gigabyte? How much memory is actually free when you try to run
the application?

As others have pointed out, mpg123 is a command line app; however, if you
decide to keep it nad not go to xmms, you can use gqmpeg as a front end
which is quite nice and graphical. It does playlists, has lots of nice
skins, etc. There are also windowmaker dockapps for mpg123.
