Did you re-run lilo after editing lilo.conf and _before_ stripping the boot
sector? If I remember correctly the circumstances leading me to have this
same problem, I had stripped a different boot sector than the one LILO was
expecting. So, the steps are:
1) Edit /etc/lilo.conf to reflect what you want
2) As root, /sbin/lilo -v
3) As root, dd if=/dev/hda6 of=bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1
4) cp bootsect.lnx to c:\
5) (assuming the linux option is already in c:\boot.ini) Reboot, select
Linux from NT's bootloader, and you should be good to go.
Let us know if it works. Good luck!

I have an ess 1868 audiodrive. I have used sndconfig to set it up

though, just not in programs)
Any suggestions? This card appears to be supported by Linux, am I doing

You can't while X is running. You can only change color depth on starting
X. You can however start two X servers (each one on a different VT) with
different color depths.

They are. It's silly to try and model the whole world by simple,
orthogonal principles. The world is fuzzy, complex and chaotic. Any
way of thinking needs to take this in account.

Most people adhering to any ideology have `watered' it somehow in
order for it to go with their common sense. You will observe that this
is often the case with the most reasonable of politicians: they
seldomly go 100% with their party's doctrines.
In ESR's case, though, I can't see anything but fanaticism. That's
what I call silly.

I haven't got a crystal ball reay. What exactly is your problem? BTW,
colour depths are an X issue and themes are either a GTK+ issue or a
window manager issue; this isn't about Gnome (but Gnome provides a
theme selector for GTK+, that's true).

The problem also occurs with the same zip disk i.e. it mount ok, unmounts ok
but won't remount. The zip disk is behaving as a non-exchangeable medium. I
have tried using scsi emulation instead of the atapi-floppy but this is
behaving in the same way. I am on kernel 2.2.2.

Linux is not the BIOS. It uses a time representation which works until
2037 or so. If an _application_ chooses to represent the date wrong,
it's not Linux's problem.

Where do you shop for computers? In this country they are bought in
giant stores where you can't even find a sales person, much less ask
them a questions. (Which is good, because they can't answer them
anyway). Most other people just buy them over the web.

Perhaps MS might just pay the "development" costs of such a system to
the CPU manufactures. No other hardware companies would have to play.
If you bought a CPU from Intel or AMD you are already opted in.

This assumes that cracking is no harder than it is today where clever
dissassembly by kids will get it done. I am worried about a future
where Intel puts the encyption right on the CPU and takes great pains
to make reverse engineering cost hundreds of millions of dollars.

I haven't found a fix for the librvplayer.so plugin, however, I use
mimeplugin to configure all the plugins for Netscape. With that, I
simply use the mimeplugin.conf file to call up rvplayer for use
with Real files. Works very nicely.
By the way, I originally "fixed" rvplayer with the "dd" script found
in the Changes file that comes with the 2.2.x kernel series. Found
that rvplayer worked nicely standalone, but not when called through
mimeplugin. Turns out that pre-loading the "rpopen" program before
calling rvplayer fixes that problem. So, I went back to the original,
unmodified rvplayer file.
I hope all this made sense. If not, please send me an e-mail and
we can talk about it.

Will be unless you plan on doing host routing, which raises the

It means you have no VT running. To correct this you should change
/etc/inittab:
============ a pice of inittab ==============
# Run gettys in standard runlevels
1:12345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty1
2:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty2
3:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty3

5:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty5
6:2345:respawn:/sbin/mingetty tty6
=============================================
The second filed indicates in which runlevels should each VT run. Xdm (Kdm)
usually runs in 5. So you have to add 5 to each line (as showed above).
You can edit it from X and then type (in xterminal) 'init q' it orders init
to reread it's configuration.

Of course there is. You can install lilo on your linux partition and set it
(the partition) active with linux fdisk. You can also install lilo into
MBR. In both cases you have to add something like this to your lilo.conf:
other=/dev/hda1

to mount anything type:
mount /dev/hdx /where/do/you/want/to/mount/it
hdx is the name of disk and partition (hda1 - first drive first partition
and so on (IDE), sda1 the same (SCSI) Don't forget cdrom usually don't have
partitions, so don't use numbers for them.

Yes, I have to reboot windoze a great deal too.

Then surely the system should do something about it.

We have operating systems so we don't have to think of every detail of
every event whoich might happen. If I wanted to plan in detail I'd go
run DOS.

I understand the problem, I just don't understand why you don't think
there should be a solution.

Subject: printerqueue disabled; only root can print

I almost made the setup of my samba-printer, but now only root can print.
when a user attempts to print, he gets the message:
lpr: Printer queue is disabled
in the lpr-man I get the hint, that spooling for users seems to be
disabled. how the hell do I enable it ?!
(I looked at the permissions of my spooling-folders. look quite ok so
far)
thanks
