One the advertising slogans against use of Free OSes on the desktop and in
the home is "There is no Jumbo Office Suite for any Free OS.". This is
false. There is more than one Jumbo Office Suite that runs on Free *n*ces.
Indeed, one of these Jumbo Office Suites is now licensed under the GPL:
http://www.openoffice.org
Another calumny against Free Software runs "But the total costs of Free
Software are higher." This is nonsense, and IBM will generously present a
detailed refutation at this meeting:

A prodigious programmer with many credits to his name, Linas Vepstas coded
the original S/390 mainframe port and contributed core pieces to the
OpenGL project before launching full time into GNUcash (www.gnucash.org)
The web site relates that Linas...
"... liked what he saw. The GUI was slick, the code was documented
and well structured, and it was all GPL'ed. And so he re-wrote it-
adding cell-widgets to XbaeMatrix, so that the combobox and arrows
would make an even slicker GUI, rewrote the X-Accountant internals
to add double-entry, an account hierarchy, split out a transaction
mini-engine, added support for stocks, and spiffed up the help
menus. This was version 1.0 as of January 1998."
Today, GNUcash is an easy-to-use personal finance application and
full-fledged accounting system that allows you to track bank accounts,
stocks, income and expenses. As quick and intuitive to use as a checkbook
register, it is based on professional accounting principles to ensure
balanced books and accurate reports. Take a look at these sceeenshots:
http://www.gnucash.org/gnome_screenshots.php3
Linas (www.linas.org) will take us through the business model, the
history, the back end and the front end of GNUcash and has asked that you
ask questions. He's coming all the way from Texas, so let's not dissapoint
him! This talk is an entry level discussion with some advanced sidebars.

Note: there is a typo in section 3.4.3 of the 'Release Notes' --
installation of the X server -- it swaps the name of the kernel module,
thus inviting you to install the kernel module a second time. (There are
two packages -- the server, and the kernel module).
BTW, I have the display working -- more or less, but setting up
XF86Config has always seemed like black-magic to me, and you can be
assured that Xconfigurator is not knowledgeable about I810.
However, I have _Not_ got my sound system working -- any ideas anyone?
Hope this helps,

Most linux distros, like their big brother unices, have their own
little quirks about where to store log / config files etc. One is
pretty much as good or as bad any other.
Having said that, for your purposes you might be better off getting the
free(ish) Intel version of Solaris from Sun. Dunno if you can download
it, but Sun charge in the region of $55 to cover their media and
distribution costs. Solaris is a commercial unix and will probably
serve you better for learning purposes.

Given that SO is free (at least in the monetary sense), it's probably worth getting
both.
SO is basically an MS office clone, so if you've used this you'll be at home straight
away.
SO is probably better at importing MS files, but also has a lot of the irritations of
MS
that made you want to try linux in the first place. The ``friendly'' interface often
gets in the way,
insists on giving unwanted advice, and not particularly stable. SO has the advantage
of running under
windoze as well as linux.
Applix has a much simpler interface, that does not try to control the whole machine
for you, and
will therefore appeal to *n*x users. It is more stable than SO, but lacks some of the
bells and whistles,
and is less good (but still OK) at importing MS files. Overall, if used in conjunction
with Gnome
(or presumabl KDE) I don't suppose there is anything much that one will do, but the
other can't.
One nice thing about having both is that as they can import and export overlapping
sets of file
formats, it's possible to get just about any file converted into any other.
Regards,
Mark

There is good documentation that will walk you through exactly what you have
to do to finish the installation of your network card at
http://www.linuxdocs.org. Depending on what version of Linux you are using,
there should be an administrative utility (i.e. Redhat has linuxconf) that
will make configuration of your network card very easy.

Hi,
I just read installation documentation of PHP, It says that it shall
uncompress the apache and php first and then re-compile, but I have
my apache already, what should I do? And my another server got
php3, how should I upgrade to php4 but without modifying my original
apache setting, or to the least, if possible.

Subject: Re: Try_Catch problem
Date: Wed, 18 Oct 2000 11:04:06 GMT
this is really a programming question and nothing to do with linux...
anyway, looking at the very skeleton code:
1stly, the line that says:
catch() {
is total rubbish - you must specify the type of object you wish to
catch... if you want a catch-all, do
catch (...) { // yep, that really is 3x .
// deal with it
}
now, secondly, the line that does the throw () is also rubbish since you
use that construct to re-throw and exception that you've just caught, do
something and then you want to propogate the execption to a higher
level.
ie
class MyException {};
int main()
{
try {
try {
cerr << "throwing... ";
throw MyException();
}
catch (const MyException& x)
cerr << "rethrowing... ";
throw;
}
}
catch (...) {
cerr << "caught" << endl;
}
return 0;
}
and fyi, sigabrt is the signal that is generated when an uncaught
exception propogates all the way to main() and its still not caught.
you maybe interested in the scott meyers books, "effective c++" and

regrds
ray
also, if NT allowed the code you showed us to work, then that compiler
you used is broken :)

This is very odd. You claim that you cannot boot windows when you
installed linux, but once you reinstalled linux, (and only god knows
where?) windows is up again? (probably just the MBR restored)I think
that the only problem you have is a badly configured lilo.conf, so I

Hello,
I've tried to submit this problem to RedHat's Bugzilla, but got no
response yet, so I'm trying to get some information this way.
I've recompiled 2.2.16-3 to support QLogic fibre channel card (reported
as 'scsi0 : QLogic ISP2100 SCSI on PCI bus 01 device 38 irq 36 base
0x2000' by 2.2.14-5 with the same compile options). While booting, I
get these messages:
...
scsi: unknown type 31
Vendor: Model: 0 <ASCII chaos>
Type: Unknown
<repeated several times>
...
kernel panic
Panic is probably caused by confused kernel which tries to find root
filesystem on sdb and there is no second scsi drive present.
HW: Dell PowerEdge 8450, PowerVault 650F array, 2 Xeons/450, 2g ram,
8.5g scsi disc.
If anybody knows what to do or met something similar, please let me
know. Thanks!

Funny that you should call me a "ms junkie"
I use Linux on a daily basis and enjoy doing so.
I don't, however, enjoy anything related to the internet experience provided
by Linux.
MS's offerings are far superior in my opinion, and for that reason and that
reason alone, I use MS products for web browsing, email, and usenet.
What the individual stated was pure FUD. I call them as I see them.
I don't approve of it when MS does it anymore than when it's done in here.
Please try and find a clue.
