Subject: message "no space left on device". what device??
Date: Wed, 07 Jul 1999 15:02:58 GMT

i have Linux 2.0.32 installed on a machine with 2 disk drives. i have
3 filesystem partitions and 2 swap partitions set up on them. as best
i can see none of these are anywhere near full. however, i am
intermittently getting messages "no space left on device" when i try
to do sommands like GZIP, STRIP and CP. the problem with CP only seems
to happen when i'm copying within a directory. also, in general, i
only have a problem within certain directories but not others. for
example right now i can copy in /bin but not in /usr/bin.
i'm having trouble with this because the message doesn't say what
"device" is full. also i can't see any difference between the
directories involved. has anybody had a problem like this? help!
TIA

Are you loading the correct SCSI (or any) module? Check messages to
see if successful, or what the problems are. Just a guess; but I don't
think you need to pass parameters to your controller.

Is it in the license agreement/warranty that you MUST use a Microsoft
OS?

If not, send the machine to them, and if they refuse to work on it under
warranty (or if you're paying for the service?) - sue them.

If it is; complain and raise a stink. Threaten to never buy from them
again. Things like that.

BTW - if anyone DOES find a reference like that in the Gateway (or any other)
license agreement; you should post it here for all of us to read and snicker
at.

When using ZMODEM with cu, minicom, etc. you should use crz/sz
instead of plain rz/sz. Rz/sz is designed to be used in the
server role. Crzsz is designed to be used in the client role.

File is crzsz.zip available at www.omen.com and elsewhere.

None of which *makes* a world war. You have missed the point. Define a
world war. In my *opinion* WWII didn't become a World War until the
participants (Britian, Russia and the U.S.) agreed on:

1. Who was the *enemy*
2. What goal(s) for victory

Until this event happened, the war was not unified.

Let's end this useless thread.

This is interesting. I returned my registration card when I bought a
Toshiba laptop few months ago, suggesting that there should be support for
Linux. Recently I received a personalized letter from Toshiba, thanking me
for my remarks (though not specifically mentioning Linux) and asking me to
join a small panel of users to give them feedback from time to time. In
view of what you say, this may well be connected with their apparent
conversion to supporting Linux. This is all good news.

  Have you tried "df"?

Hi,

I have a Gateway solo and it developed some problems which I am hoping
will get solved at the local Gateway country store.

Its a dual boot (win98 + Linux) machine. In the event that I have to
mail this back
to Gateway, will they create problems on finding that Linux has been
installed
on the machine?? Couple times their tech support people have tried to
pass the buck
on to stuff that did not come pre-loaded - for problems that were
absolutely unrelated -
so I am a little worried about warranty and realted issues.

I am just wondering if anyone has had to mail in their dual boot
machines - and could
share their experience. Maybe even provide suggestions for what
precautions to take.

Thanks in advance for your time,

Subject: free -vs- ps

I did
   ps max
to show the memory usage of all processes.
The 'm' flag shows memory usage.
The 'a' flag shows the jobs of all users.
The 'x' flag shows processes without a controlling terminal.

Then I looked at the 7th field, which shows the SIZE of each process.
Adding these up with
   ps max | gawk '{ mem+=$7 } ; END { print mem }'
I get 92552 kilobytes (about 92MB) for the memory usage of all processes.

None of the processes use swap.

Then I used the free command
   free
the result of which is
total used free shared buffers cached
   Mem: 158264 145092 13172 44740 52476 38536
   -/+ buffers/cache: 54080 104184
   Swap: 88320 0 88320

The strange thing is that free reports that 145092 kilobytes (about 145MB)
are used. Who is right -- ps or free?

While we're at it, please explain to me what is the meaning of the
line "-/+ buffers/cache".

Sorry, I don't know about something ready. But if you don't get something
better, the following thoughts might be a start:

- You might use an initial ramdisk. Then you burn the compressed kernel
image and the compressed ramdisk image to flash. I assume you don't
need a full unix system, so the script "linuxrc" might never exit, and
your initial ramdisk is quite final.

- Something has to load kernel and ramdisk image. Maybe syslinux can be
hacked to read the few needed "files" from flash?

- Do you have ethernet? For a small system I used etherboot during
development to load a tagged image including an initial ramdisk. Later
I burnt this tagged image to flash and hacked etherboot to "load" from
  flash instead of tftp.

Sure, every connection executes /etc/ip-up if you have one. Start a
timer which runs out in an hour, and make a log entry. If they log off
first, ip-down can be used to make another log entry. When you start the
timer you deduct from the hour the time already used in the day.

Beware boundary conditions, if someone starts a connect at 2355 you want
them to have 55 minutes in the next day, so if they have at least five
minutes left the timer should be set for 65 minutes. Also avoid charging
the full length of the connect against a day if some of the connect took
place in the previous day.

The boundary stuff makes what would be trivial into something really
ugly, assuming you want to do it right. Just define "right" before you
start.

In cu type the right escape characters:
        ~+ rz
or ~+ sz
Then it works.

Subject: format >2GB hard
Date: Wed, 07 Jul 1999 13:09:56 -0700

Hey guys;

I have a HP pentium II 233MHz machine with 6GB hard disk. I Want to have
both Windows and Linux on my machine. So I partitioned the system with
2.6GB (created as FAT32) for windows and 3.6GB for Linux. I've installed
linux RH6.0 without any problem. The problem is that I can only format
2GB of my windows partition (I used the boot disk from Windows98 to
format c). It doesnot let me to format more than 2GB. I used the
command

format c: /s

Note that the size of the partitions are correct on fdisk. How can I
format all of c:?

send me an email at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks.

Kamran.
