Oh please.. your pppd is not crashing, it just give out an error message because
it couldn't find a secret keyword to authenticate your logon. Add "noauth" (w/o
quotes of course) into /etc/ppp/options, that will do it. Most probably your PC
is connected to LAN and have default route set.

Firstly, sincere thanks to everyone that posted/mailed in response to my
earlier cry for help entitled "New to Linux: Help!".
One problem I'm having is that everything on the desktop is HUGE. The
consensus was that this was because in my XF86Config file, the
resolution was set to 640x480, whereas what I need is 800x600. I ran
XF86Configurator - no success here. So, I switched the modes around in
XF86Config by hand, with "800x600" first in line. Still no improvement.
What on earth is wrong?! (I can't use Ctrl-Alt-Minus/Plus because I
don't have a numeric keypad).
The machine is a Toshiba Satellite 310CDT (which the Linux Laptop page
at utexas.edu doesn't mention) with 800x600 LCD panel, and (I think) a
pretty standard SVGA card (which was autodetected with no difficulty).
If anyone has succeeded with Linux (I'm using RH6.1) on this machine I'd
love to hear from you. (I'm also having trouble with the keyboard
settings, though this can wait)
Cheers, Simon

This is an issue for the firewall, which nobody here knows anything
about, as it's a Linux newsgroup.
Of course, if the firewall were running Linux :-), then it would be a
simple case of compiling the ICQ masquerading module, then 'modprobe
masq_icq'.

This is the typical response when the module couldn't load for some
reason; if it was written well, then you may find a more helpful error
message in /var/log/messages.
>And I can't see my module in the loaded module list. I don't know what's
>going on. What is busy here ?
The module failed to load. At a guess, it may be because it failed to
find the card. I don't know about this driver, but check it's docs to
see if there are any paramaters you need to give it. If it's an ISA
card, you'll need to set up the PnP using pnpdump and isapnp first
(read the man pages).

This depends on how the driver does it. If it gets the modem to
emulate a COM port, then you need to use /dev/ttySx as the modem
device [where x = COM(x+1) ie COM1 = /dev/ttyS0 etc.]
Once you've got a device working, kppp is the easiest dialin I've
seen, and it's a lot like Windows dialup networking, so if you're
familiar with that...
>PPP is the only way I can get on line. If I can't get internet access,
>then linux would mean nothing to me.
You bought a modem which is only half a modem. I had one of these with
my computer, and Windows hung up the modem half the time for no reason
- I assume because the processor (PII 450) couldn't keep up. My
external one works fine.
Buying an external modem would be a good investment - there are, in my
experience, far more reliable.

It depends on what you put in /etc/apt/sources.list. You want
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian frozen main contrib non-free
deb ftp://non-us.debian.org/debian-non-US \
frozen non-US/main non-US/contrib non-US/non-free
# line broken only for usenet posting!
Recent word says that you must run
$ apt-get update apt
before updating the rest of the distribution.

Yes, if "." is not in PATH, then you will never inadvertently execute a
program just because your current working directory happens to be somewhere
unusual.
You should put "." last, if you have it in PATH at all. Then you will
never inadvertently execute a program (unless you misspell it ...) just
because your cwd happens to be somewhere unusual. If "." is not last, then
the behavior of scripts (and possibly other programs) may seem erratic,
depending on the cwd.

Make sure the device is readable by your uid, then I would try something
like:
tail -f /dev/ttyS2 >>/home/userid/log/logilename.log
Where /dev/ttyS2 is your serial port.
I have not done this but in theory it should work. Bes of luck...

Does anybody have any experience in upgrading SuSE Linux v6.0 to SuSE Linux

procedure would be less painful than that from v5.2 to v6.0 (ISTR my Linux
partition gaining 500 megs of who-knows-what, and system performance going

Or you could just install Debian, where a scheme similar to you've
described (it's what the pppd authors sugest) is standard and a menu driven
tool (pppconfig) is provided for creating the files. Set the permissions
and ownerships correctly and you can arrange for only the members of a
