Maybe you are missing the file pak0.pak in your baseq2 dir. The file colormap.pcx is
packed into pak0.pak. Since this is file is about 180 mb it doesn't come with the
q2-packages for linux. You can get it from a windoze-version of q2.
Good luck!

Date: Thu, 15 Jul 1999 12:23:43 GMT
Hi all,
I have a Quantum PowerStor L200 with a DLT 4000 tape drive. It is used
to backup a Redhat 5.2 (kernel 2.2.9) Linux box.
I use DLTtape IV cartridges.
When I try to backup a big amount of data, it stops at the end of the
tape asking for the next tape.
Problem is that sometimes it stops after 20 GB and somtimes after 35
GB.
I have tried both tar and bru with the same result.
Do you have any idea why?
Should I set up the density with mt? And where should I get the value
for it?
Is it a problem with the BOT of the tape? How can I change it?
Thanks for any hint

I installed lilo on the MBR, but it didn't make any difference. The system
booted to '98 right after ez-bios. It seems the most appropriate thing to do
is try to remove ez-bios and reinstall everything. The problem is that I
really prefer to put nt, but don't know why it crashes.
i'm using slackware 3.6 and linux's fdisk warns me that the drive parameters
are more than what it recognizes. This is no problem for me because this is
not the hdd that has linux on it. i'm only trying to put lilo on that drive.

To answer your question....yes, Linux and Windows can see each other.
I have a Linux box connected to my DSL line and the Windows machine
connected to the linux box. So that way I can still have my DSL
service and have my server at the same time. The way I have it set up
is that I have two nics on the linux box, one connected to the DSL and
the other connected to a hub. And the Windows machine connnected to
the hub. Now the IP address I set up from the the nic connected to
the hub, I have as the gateway address for the Windows machine in the
newtork control panel. If you want to have a private network going
on, you can use something like 192.168.x.x (class C) as your IP
address. This is usually reserved for private network. Hope this
helps....

Since you use RedHat 6.0 it is easy to just the printconf tool. If you
have installed Samba you just choose to install a SMB/Windows 95/NT
Printer and off you go. I use it all the time and the only drawback is
that you can't see the que with lpq.

Date: 15 Jul 1999 06:38:25 PDT
I had a print job going yesterday, and I needed to leave the computer in
windows for the next person. I told it :
shutdown -r 15
And it gave me the message: system going down for reboot in 15 minutes.
I saw that it was going to take longer than I thought when I was about
to leave, so I did Ctrl-C to break, and it said Shutdown Cancelled.
Then I issued shutdown -r 30.
Nothing was printed to the screen to acknowledge what I had typed, but
the system did go down, because I found it in windows later.
When I went back into linux and tried to login as myself, it told me
System going down for reboot at <<date>><<time>> where the date and
time were what they were when the system went down. Then it told me my
login was incorrect and wouldn't let me in.
I can only login as root.
Any ideas?

Just as a guess - have you tried checking that all the memory is actually
okay? If you're now only using a quarter of the memory, it seems
reasonable to suspect that some of the now unused memory may be duff.

See "man shutdown".
You had two active shutdowns - so you'll need to run shutdown -c to cancel
the running shutdown.

That's not less, but more than is necessary on SuSE Linux. Install
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse_update/suse60/a1/opatch6.rpm (info is from
the SuSE support database, search was for 'oracle') and read
/usr/doc/packages/oracle/README.SuSE.english
Also contains /etc/rc.d/rc?.d/S..oracle init scripts.
Of course, it's not really more or less you have to do on either redhat
or suse, it really comes down to the same steps. You have to follow the
Oracle Installation guide for Linux, and twice you have to make a manual
adjustment - once for linking something with -ltcl (which doesn't exist
on SuSE because there's a -ltcl7.6 and a -ltcl8.0 because there are
still Tcl7.6 apps out there) - can be solved by creating a link in
/usr/lib temporarily or in the Oracle Makefile - and once for
/usr/bin/sh (create link -> /bin/sh), which is an unusual place for sh
(because /usr is often a separate partition and the very basic system
tools like the standard shell belong on the root-partition in /bin, for
those who don't know).

Fear what?

I've installed RH5.2 on Toshisba Satelites and Tecra 8000 and everything
worked almost out the box (well with a little help, thanks linux
community!). On the Tecra RH5.2 installed well and a only a little
tuning was needed to get xwindows working. As far as sound, I really
had to experiment, but I got it to work (I believe the tecra 8000 uses
crystal, or yamaha)
I really liked the Toshiba's. I'm currently using a Dell Inspiron 7000
running RH5.2, it took a little more work to get xwindows to work, but
its running really well right now. Unfortunatally, no sound. The
current workaround (as far as I know) is to run a DOS app to "turn on"
the card.
I can recommend both, but if you need sound from a portable Toshiba or
maybe an Apple. BTW - RH6.0 with the new kernel may work with more
sound cards.
Good Luck and happy linuxing,
Tom De.

They're not that strange when you are used to them (you can access files
in the directory with "x" but not read the directory list itself "r").
They can be useful. One example is when you have a web server with user
home page support. The user places the pages in ~/public_html which
must be world readable and accessible. Therefore the home directory
needs at least "x" access but by not granting "r" you can stop
other people seeing what you have in your home directry whilst still
allowing them at public_html.
If public_html has "rx" permission then people can list it. For example:
bob$ cd ~joe
bob$ ls
Permission Denied
bob$ cd public_html
bob$ ls
index.html
blah.gif
...

Being a newbie myself and "finally" figuring out how to do this so I can

Press Alt+Ctrl+F3 to get to a terminal and log in as root. Run "XF86Setup".
Change you monitor resolution here be sure to run xvidmon (sp?) to get
refresh/size/position right and then save it. Once complete press Alt+F7 to
go back to the KDE. Sometimes your KDE may be blank because you have
changed your resolution so press Alt+Ctrl+F3 again and enter "reboot".

Depends if you do 'tar cf tarfile *' or 'tar cf tarfile .'. Do 'set -x'
and try and see the difference between the two variants. The explanation

I have been thinking of backup solutions for a little while, and, if you
are willing to remove your hard-drive for the backup, you should be able
to do the following...
buy a "big" but cheap IDE drive. Spend some bucks on a 18 gig, or maybe
a 10gig monster. (If your system is small, then go for even smaller).
plug it in, and back-up and compress the backup to the new disk. This
should allow for a number of backups to the same disk. It is not
necessarily a good thing, but it is better than nothing. Frankly, I am
intending to get a cheapish IDE disk (I use SCSI moslty), just for
backup.
just a thought. you will end up spending a fortune at a third party
backup "place".

If you turn off your modem, start netscape, go for a coffee
(perhaps decaf... <shudder> :) wait patiently while all the
timeouts expire... eventually you will get IIRC 3 different
error messages that tell you important URLs at netscape.com
cannot be contacted from your computer. What're you doing?
Remember how in George Orwell's 1984 the TV was two-way and
accepted typed-in commands? Big Brother could see what you
were doing anytime the TV was on? Cue the music from Jaws!
