I see always patches with kernel sources, but I never
understand what is it importance?
Running Linux book from Oreilly say that all patches
must be teecharged from kernel x.x.x until that we will use know.
Someone can explain this.

Date: Tue, 04 Jul 2000 16:16:59 GMT
Hi,
I am trying to compile srilm package under RedHat 6.2 basic
install. Unfortunatly, there is some things gcc version
egcs-2.91 are very strict about and I got these errors, I
don't know how to correct them:
Vocab.cc: In method `int (* Vocab::compareIndex())(VocabIndex,
VocabIndex) const':
Vocab.cc:473: return to `int (*)(VocabIndex, VocabIndex)' from `int
(*)(const char *const *, const char *const *)'
Vocab.cc: In method `int (* Vocab::compareIndices())(const VocabIndex *,
const VocabIndex *) const':
Vocab.cc:480: return to `int (*)(const VocabIndex *, const VocabIndex
*)' from `int (*)(const char *const *, const char *const *)'
If someone want to take a look, you can download the code at:
http://www.speech.sri.com/projects/srilm/download.html
What you have to do to:
1.untar the sources
2.chmod u+w Makefile
3.edit Makefile to change SRILM variable to the unpack dir
4.do "make World"
If you have the same errors than me. Tell me. However, if you
got no problems at all to compile the code. Tell me what is
your configuration and what you did exactly.
Thanks!

And let's not forget that the performance of an Athlon-1000 with
PC-133 SDRAM and 133MHz FSB is only typically 2% faster than
an Athlon-850 on the same motherboard, for high-energy games and other
supposedly "power" uses... instead of the 12% one would "expect" from
just the CPU-speed numbers.

;-) Um, anyhow, I _think_ it's normal to have far more stuff in /dev
than MAKEDEV creates directly. Consider that if, for instance, I do
_not_ compile RTC clock support into my kernel: /dev/rtc will still
be there but `cat /dev/rtc' returns some kind of "no such file"
error, but of course `ls -l /dev/rtc' show the file. As I understand
it, the files in /dev are hooks into functionality of the kernel,
nothing more. I'd say it's not a problem, except for the clutter.

All good points. I compiled from source a half dozen times following
different instructions and sometimes repeating the same instructions. Not
because apache is so hard to get working, but because I was trying to
compile in support for php4 and mysql. And, I couldn't get php pages to
process. On the last time I compiled it. I deleted all of the files that I
could find so I was hopefully working with a clean slate. I know that I had
to change the path to apachectl in /etc/rc.d/rc.M (I think is where it was).
There could have been other references to the httpd.conf file in the startup
scripts that I didn't find. I'll try that ln -s idea first.
Thanks,

One of the features of Staroffice v. 5.2 is a standalone Player for
Staroffice Impress presentations. I installed it on my Red Hat 6.0

do not display. The chart displays fine when the presentation is
displayed full-screen with the full Staroffice suite on the same

Alas, I have encountered exactly the same experience! When I start
photopaint, it pops up a window "Initializing WINE", then another (I

progress bar hangs at 20%, then the sprew of "err:seh:..." as you said.
I'm using whatever came with RH 6.2, but using WindowMaker for the windows

The install log claims that the install was successful. (...Although I
got no icons on my window manager menus. I have to start from the

Hello, not sure if this is related,
I experienced problems with Netscape and RedHat 6.0. I had only 20Mb of
memory, and it was pointed out that 32Mb was a minimum for reliable
service, more if used with Gnome.
I never did get the memory, so I'm not sure if that would have solved
things, but it might be worth considering.

See 'man chat' to see how to tell what your connect speed is, but you have
to make sure that your modem displays DCE (modem2modem) speed instead of
DTE (cpu2modem) speed with a modem init string if necessary. However, at
best you will see download speed (not actual connect carrier upload speed)
After you disconnect pppd, you can connect to your modem with 'minicom -o'
and check either at&v1 (Rockwell) or ati11 (Lucent) to see what your
initial and last connect rates were in both directions and possibly how
many times it retrained.
To read AT commands from the command line you might take a look at the
Perl Device::SerialPort module. I have not gotten that to print out the
full at&v1 result, but it prints enough of it to see initial and final
connect rates.

With regard to "rewriting" partition tables...
I just moved some partition boundaries to give some more room to one, and
use some unused space on another (they were adjacent). I have Partition
Magic 4.0, but it refused to touch this disk, saying the partition table is
corrupted. (PM is fussy; both DOS fdisk and Linux fdisk will work with this
partition table. It was originally "messed" with using a version of EZDRIVE.)
On the other hand, I can't just delete and recreate partitions with Linux
fdisks, because it seems to scramble the device numbers.
But the version of PM that Caldera has built into their installer will let me
change the partition boundaries and rewrite the partition table. Then simply
reboot out of the installer. (I had previously backed up the partitions, and
restored after moving the boundaries. I'm not sure that the version of
PM that's in Caldera can move ext2 partitions.)
But the partition table rewriting capability is a good reason to keep a
copy of Caldera Open Linux around.

Some of the specifics depend on the specific distro. I use TurboLinux 6
(same for the old 3.6 and 4.0 too) which contain a chat script in
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/chat-ppp0. I simply modified mine to add
the specific option to the modem init sequence to report the full
connect string, then echo it. This works fine if the connection is made
from a console with '/sbin/ifup ppp0' (and killed with '/sbin/ifdown
ppp0'), but if the connection is from a GUI such as the modemlights
applet in Gnome, there is no output. Here is my chat file:
'REPORT' 'CONNECT'
'ABORT' 'BUSY'
'ABORT' 'ERROR'
'ABORT' 'NO CARRIER'
'ABORT' 'NO DIALTONE'
'ABORT' 'Invalid Login'
'ABORT' 'Login incorrect'
'' 'ATZ'
'OK\r\n' 'ATL2M1W2'
'OK\r\n' ',ATDTxxx-xxx-xxxx'
'CONNECT' ''
The first string echos out the connect string, the line after the 'ATZ'
sets speaker characteristics, but the key is the 'W2' which says to
report long connect strings. It works with a Hayes 33.6 and Motorola
BitSurfr 28.8 at least.

and I touched a ".noident" file in the home directory of a couple
users who are running daemons and I restarted the identd.
But, their usernames still show up on a nmap scan with one exception,
the user "nobody". If I put a ".noident" file in the "~/nobody"
directory, that username is hidden. With other users, identd doesn't
seem to respect the presence of a ".noident" file in their home
directory.
Can anyone test to see if they can get this "-N" option working on
their RedHat v6.2 system?

do a 'stty susp ^Z' this will set your suspend character to the
control Z. A stty -a will print out all your settings
