I have a problem with my Adaptec 2940UW PCI controller. I currently
have Windows NT 4.0 and Linux 5.2 dual-booting from my system. My
system is a 200 PRO with 5-4.5 GB Wide SCSI drives, 1 CDROM, 1 CDR, 100
MB Ethernet, and USR ISDN. Everything works under NT (not my preferred
system, but I use it because everything works). Linux 5.2 works but
does not recognize the Ethernet adapter or ISDN adapter. I know that
6.0 supports both adapters in the machine, so I need to upgrade.
However, whenever I try to boot (either from the CD or diskette) it
simply keeps rescanning the SCSI bus without ever finding the adapter.
I had absolutely no problems installing 5.2. Any information would be
greatly appreciated.

You need to add these two lines to your /etc/resolv.conf file

search <your_domain_here>

I was wanting to do this, how did you setup the linux machine? I have
it where I can ping the other NIC, but nothing past it. I've got IP
forwarding enabled and have messed around with routing in setup, but so
far nothing has worked.

Then seek alternate documentation. You do not need the X Window System to
make your network work. In fact, you need some level of network function
to make X work.

Ignore the graphical configuration. You need a kernel with PPP compiled in
or loaded as a module. You need pppd. You need chat. You need an ISP
account that works.

Read the following HOWTO files: Serial, PPP, NET-3.

> I don't
>have the right display because I don't have the right server.

Leave that till later. You need the network first.

There is, but it's extra work, since you will be doing the PPP link anyway.

do this at your shell prompt:
  apropos XF86Config
  man XF86Config
  find / -name '*XF86Config*' -print 2>&1 | grep -v 'Permission denied' # this takes
a while
  locate XF86Config
  file /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XF86Config* /etc/X11/XF86Config*
Feels better already, doesn't it?

Good. cua2 is obsolete. Don't use it. Try this:
  dmesg | grep tty
  ls -l /dev/ttyS* /dev/cua*
  cat /proc/interrupts
  grep serial /proc/ioports
  file /dev/modem

I am having similar problems with my new RH 6.0 installation. I can
make the kernel image, fix up lilo and everything and be able to boot my
old kernel, but as soon as I hit that 'make_install' I am screwed. My
old kernel complains that it can't find the modules dependancies, and
the new image gets all upset about
not finding 'inet-pf-1'. Does anyone have any solutions here?

Also, I am confused as to how two different kernel images can now
peacefully co-exist when using modules? Don't they try and use the same
modules directory so that only one of them can have the
correct dependancies??? Can anyone offer some explanation?

Thanks so much for your help.

Try tail -f /var/log/vbox/vboxgetty-ttyI6.log so you can see 'real-time'
what happens.
I noticed vbox doesn't respond when I call from the same MSN as vbox is
listening to. So try to call with another number of change the number
vbox is listening to.

Looks ok, only the &E<your number> I'm not sure about. The format is
country dependant. in the Netherlands we have to remove the leading 0.

Try setting an user account in /etc/vbox/vboxd.conf this solved the
problem for me.
Seems the .vboxrc is not used at all btw. In some docs I read the
.vboxrc should also define the number of rings before answering. But
other doc's don't mention a keyword for that option.

Hope this helps, if not don't blame me I only got vbox working tonight

OK

For everyone, edit the /etc/profile script
For one person, edit that users ~/.profile script (i.e.
/home/myid/.profile)

change the line that says
   PATH=/some/path/name:/some/other/path/name
to include the additional directories

Some s!!t decided to trademark the name Linux, and sue loads of people. In
short, the Linux community told him where to go and the trademark got
reassigned to Linus Torvalds. So, yes, Linux is a trademark.

I wonder if the word 'Microsoft' appears in that document.....

I'd suspect a hardware problem. Try memtest-86 out on it. If that fails and

Nope. A file can be deleted iff you have write permission to its
parent directory. You don't need to own the file, but you do
need write permission to the directory, whether or not you own
the directory. (Obviously, if you own the directory but don't
have write permission to it you can simply grant yourself permission
and then delete the file.)

Hi,

I must confess that by blind luck I managed to get a working 800x600
resolution "screen" setting for my I7000, by using the XiGraphics
Drivers. This was about 6 months ago and I did not make a copy of my
XF86Config file. I just upgraded to RedHat 6.0 (not relevant to this
email) and it blew away the good XF86Config file.

I realized, while trying to get the XFree86 drivers going again, that I
really did not know some important information concerning the LCD and
its video card. For example the specs for refresh rate and sync rate are
always published for video monitors. I have not the slightest idea of
these specifications concerning my monitor and Dell is not forthcomming
about them either.

Can anyone help?

Thank You

Is your machine dual-boot Windows and Linux? If so, does the modem work fine
in Windows? If so, see what its settings are.

I had this sort of problem when my modem was COM3 IRQ5 and I'd forgotten to
use setserial to set /dev/ttyS2 to IRQ5 (instead of its default IRQ4).

Unlike windows, which looks in the current directory for executables,
unix systems only look in the directories listed in the PATH environment
variable. If you want your shell to find executables in the current
directory then you could add . to your path. On a multi user system
this is a security risk since anyone could, for example, put an
executable named ls in /tmp. Your upgrade must have changed the
default path setting, this is often done in /etc/profile.

I have the bash shell on my Suse 6.1, but it won't read my .bashrc (My
aliases in .bashrc don't work)!
Is this possible or am I gone totally crazy?!

Thanks,
