Try 'xv': xv -root -quit some.jpg (see the xv docs for more options).

I had redhat on my system, but I had to remove it cause I needed windoz
for work. :(

I am still commited to installing Linux
And I have D: = 300mg

I want to work on writing a cdrom driver(Panasonic KXL-783A)
but I like GUI.

So I need a fast/small kernel/version that will ride on dos
a fast/small desktop environment & c IDE.

Which is the best Zipslack or DosLinux???
Or am I way off and both are not what I am looking for.
Are there other choices?

And If I write a CDRom driver for these versions are will it
be compatable with regular linux.

chmod +s <some_file>

You have to setuid. Read up. Also there is this magical command called 'su'
that lets you put on the aluminumfoil crown of rootness and play in the big
sandbox.

As the bash manual states (in the `Pattern Matching' subsection of the section
on `Pathname Expansion'), you need to have set `extglob' with `shopt' for
this to work. Bash doesn't enable the ksh-style extended globbing functionality
automatically. If you run `shopt -s extglob', the example code prints `ok'
with bash-2.03.

comp.os.linux.networking was created to reduce posts to
comp.os.linux.misc and you're cheating by crossposting to both,
especially since your question is clearly networking related.

In some societies, where resources are scarce, people are abandoned to

society with a surfeit of wealth, there's no excuse for adopting that
attitude.

The answer to your question is: you're the "loser," a "man" whose

By install you mean compile? If yes, the problem is that it's looking under
/usr first and here you maybe have the old Glib/GTK+? If yes, rpm -e --nodeps
glib-devel gtk+-devel. Just keep the shared libraries for binary
compatibility (the old Glib/GTK+ apps neeeds them). Run ./configure --help
and look at --glib-prefix... options. First remove the RPMS and run
./configure. If it fails, use the configure options.

A state of D indicates that the process is waiting for the kernel to
complete some action for it. What is the application doing? What
do you have misconfigured that is causing the kernel to hang on that
resource?

As to Linux ``allocating'' CPU, it does not. It allocates time to
run only. During that time, the application is permitted to use
100% of the CPU available. Most efficiently written programs do
NOT use all the time allocated, thereby showing up as using less than
100% of the available CPU time. Also, when more than one program is
scheduled to run, usage may be less than 100% for each process.
This can depend on the niceness of each process.

>CPU in such a way? What was the 99% CPU used for? I never see such

If top says the CPU is 99% idle, then the CPU was literally idle.
During that time, it does not execute programs or consume much
power.

How can anyone tell, you only complain about some numbers. Lets
see some gritty facts: what are the apps, where are they hanging,
what are you doing?

Subject: How to use lpr -s switch? -r doesn't work....
Date: Fri, 23 Jul 1999 04:44:52 GMT

I'm having problems with lpr and the -s switch. Well, actually, lpr -s
works, but if I try to use the -r option together with the -s, it doesn't
work. ie: lpr -rs <filename>

Linux accepts the command, but depending upon the order of the -r and -s,
different things happen. lpr -rs causes the file to be copied to the spool
directory and deleted upon completion. lpr -r -s does the same.

lpr -sr creates a symbolic link in the spool directory (as desired), but
doesn't delete the file upon complete. Neither does lpr -s -r.

Does anyone know how I can use lpr to print using symbolic links (ie: the -s
switch), and have lpr automatically delete the original file upon
completion? I can't seem to get any combo of switches to work!

Am running RH 5.2. Looked for an lpr version number, but can't seem to
figure out how to find it.

THanks!

Eric

I tried to use kdat to do a backup tonight as it's been far too long since
I did one. I think kdat is seriously broken; it saw my that I had a tape in
the drive (Connor CTMS 3200) once and asked to format it. I let it format the
tape; after that, kdat insisted there was no tape in the drive.

Strikes me that you'd want your backup utility to be as reliable a piece of
software as you've got on your system. Even if you could get kdat to make
a backup, I don't think I'd trust it or rely on it. And if you can't do that,
it's a waste of disk space.

>Maybe I need to try a different backup utility? Thanks.

I had bought the Official Red Hat 5.0 distro a while back. This includes a
licensed version of BRU2000-PE (Personal Edition, version 15.0) together with
their xbru GUI frontend. It seems to work very well. BRU stands for Backup and
Restore Utility, BTW. http://www.estinc.com/

|Hello. I am building a network and have never put a Linux machine on it.
|I was wondering what 10/100 Network Interface Cards you use and if you have

I've not seen any problem with the following:

Netgear FA310TX Revision C* with DEC 21140 chip (tulip driver, cheap,
now hard to get any DEC 21140 based card)
Intel EtherExpress Pro100 (eepro100 driver, expensive)

The following are more problematical on Linux:

Netgear FA310TX Revision D* with Lite-On PNIC chip (tulip driver,
cheap) -- works in a computer with an Intel 430TX based
motherboard, but not in a computer with a VIA MVP3 based
        motherboard
CNet Pro110B with ASIX 88140 chip (tulip driver, cheap) -- does not
work at all even though it is recognized by the tulip driver

|Are there any that you would recommend? Also, is there a
|problem with putting 2 of the same type/make of NIC in the same computer?

No problem with two DEC 21140 based Netgear FA310TX in one computer.

Subject: Setting up variables for usage in scrpits...
Date: Fri, 23 Jul 1999 06:02:04 GMT

I was wondering how one would go about pulling settings from a file
and loading them into variables for usage in scripts. Example:

File contains:

IP=123.123.123.123
ROUTER=324.215.242.322

(ip addys are purely fictional (: )

And I wish to have a script that runs after execution of the dhcp client
(which creates the file) to set up the firewall using the information
contained in the above file.

Help is appriciated (:
