Subject: newbie question
Date: Tue, 24 Oct 2000 17:32:16 GMT
How do I set up my Linux box as PPP server? I have this box connected
to the internet via DSL and I want to be able to dial in and access the
internet from a Windows machine. Can anyone help me out? I have mgetty
already installed and I am able to dial in with hyperterminal and login.
I am told I should be able to use a Windows dial up networking
connection to login, but I am not able to connect and after checking the
/var/log/messages it reads as follws:
FAILED LOGIN 1 FROM for AutoPPP User not known to the underlying
authentication module
If anyone can help me out or point me in the right direction I would
greatly appreciate it.
Thank you

But this won't preserve creation/modification/access times, which dump/restore
will. tar will preserve ctime and mtime, but not atime (I believe).

Linux connects to more networks and can read more file systems than any
mickysoft product ever will.
For example, this is a list of filesystems I can access with just my RH6.2
distribution:
adfs, affs, autofs, coda, coherent, devpts, efs, ext, ext2, hfs, hpfs,
iso9660, minix, msdos, ncpfs, nfs, ntfs, proc, qnx4, romfs, smbfs, sysv,

Subject: Printer spool won't start-lpd/lprng
Date: 24 Oct 2000 14:28:33 -0500
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Here's the problem:
During boot when services are started, it just hangs on "Starting
printer spooler", and hangs until I turn off the printer. If I try to
start the spooler from /etc/init.d it says "Starting printer spooler"
without any pause, but it's not started!
If I try to print direct to port with the lprngtool, it works, but the
postscript and ascii don't even get a flashing light.
It worked fine a little while ago, then I screwed up my /var
permissions, but now they are fixed but printing still doesn't work.
I've unstalled (purged) lpd and installed lprng, then the other way
around, and finally ended up with lprng again, but it just doesn't
work!
What else is there to check? Yes, I read the printing howto.
Thanks,
Jon

Hi,
My SGI machine has a printer attached to it,
/usr/etc/lpd is one of the running processes there, and bsdlpr is
chkconfig'ed on. I'm trying to print from a Linux box to that remote
printer, and it doesn't work. (I did configure the Linux box using
printtool)
Did I forget to configure something? I did add the Linux Box's IP and

I found my problem
On the hdc i lose all my partitions.
For repair that, i configure hdc samething with hda (fdisk /dev/hda -ul )
See my hda
Disk /dev/hda: 16 heads, 63 sectors, 19852 cylinders
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 63 33263 16600+ fd Linux raid autodetect
/dev/hda2 33264 20010815 9988776 5 Extended
/dev/hda5 33327 1057391 512032+ fd Linux raid autodetect
/dev/hda6 1057455 1320479 131512+ fd Linux raid autodetect
/dev/hda7 1320543 20010815 9345136+ fd Linux raid autodetect
And now configure hdc with fdisk (fdisk /dev/hdc ).
Disk /dev/hdc: 16 heads, 63 sectors, 19852 cylinders
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hdc1 * 63 33263 16600+ fd Linux raid autodetect
/dev/hdc2 33264 20010815 9988776 5 Extended
/dev/hdc5 33327 1057391 512032+ fd Linux raid autodetect
/dev/hdc6 1057455 1320479 131512+ fd Linux raid autodetect
/dev/hdc7 1320543 20010815 9345136+ fd Linux raid autodetect
And when i have two set of similar disk partitions i use de command
(raidhotadd /dev/md0 /dev/hdc1)
(raidhotadd /dev/md1 /dev/hdc6) etc ...
After i can see in my /proc/mdstat
Personalities : [raid1]
read_ahead 1024 sectors
md0 : active raid1 hda1[0] hdc1[1] 16512 blocks [2/2] [UU]
md2 : active raid1 hda5[0] hdc5[1] 511936 blocks [2/2] [UU]
md1 : active raid1 hdc6[1] hda6[0] 131392 blocks [2/2] [UU]
md3 : active raid1 hda7[0] hdc7[1] 9345024 blocks [2/2] [UU]
unused devices: <none>
My raid are come back .
I conclude when you change one hard disk on linux raid software or
just for resync your raid. The first step is to check your two disks.
If you have two disks with same sizes and same partitions you
can use comand:
(raidhotadd /dev/md(x) /dev/hd(xx))

I would like to send the same message to multiple (say 100) recipients
without showing all their names but only the one to whom the message
arrived (something like "extended lcc").
I know that I can achieve something like that pressing ^R and using
the "lcc" field but using that way no name and email address will be
showed and it is not exactly I need. (Similar in mutt).
Does anybody have any idea how to achieve "extended lcc" feature
in pine? (I use pine under Linux and Win95/NT).
May be you could suggest some other way (programs
under Win95/NT or Linux) to achieve "extended lcc" feature?
Should I write e.g. some shell script?
Thanks in advance

Did you read the PPP-HOWTO? that explains PPP and both a
client and Server and the configuration as a server. Also I am sure
the pppd driver has documentation to the explains what you need to

Subject: Handling of Fortran files in Netscape
Date: Tue, 24 Oct 2000 10:19:23 -0700
Sorry if this is not the right ng to post this question...
Netscape 4.75 under RedHat 6.1 - I'm trying to make Netscape open
Fortran files in emacs. I tried to create a new helper application entry
for files with "suffixes: f,f77,f90" and "application: emacs %s".
This doesn't work unless I change the entry Plain text (wich should take
care only of files with suffixes txt or text) to have "application: emacs %s".
And even in that case I get a warning message saying:
Warning:this is an executable 'emacs' script!
You may be about to execute arbitrary system commands
on your local machine. This is a security risk.
Unless you completely understand this script, it
is strongly recommended you not do this.
Execute script?
If in the entry for 'Plain Text' I put something like application: gedit %s
the file is open in gedit without any warning.
Any ideas how to solve this? I'd like Netscape to handle plain text files
and some editor (preferably emacs) to handle Fortran files.
Thanks,

I have a Linux system, connected to the Internet via a LAN, that I want to

as the PPP server also runs Linux, and I have a shell account on it, so
logically the best thing to do with the remote end is to run Slirp.
I don't know how to handle my end, though. If I were using a modem to dial

But my only way into the remote system is via telnet, and I don't know how
to connect pppd to a telnet session.
Can anyone suggest a way to make this work?

You can put the installation cdrom in and do Upgrade instead of Install.
Choose some small thing to install, like joe. Then you will get the option
to install lilo in the mbr. Do that. You will also have to edit /etc/fstab
unless this is in the same place on the new computer as it was on the old
one. For example, if it was secondary master on the old computer and is the
same on the new computer, then /etc/fstab would not need to be changed.
Otherwise you will have to edit.
You can put the install cdrom in again and type in 'rescue' at the boot
prompt. That will put linux into RAM. Then you will need to mount your /
partition. Do:
mkdir /mnt/rh
mount -t ext2 /dev/hdc1 /mnt/rh (You have to choose the place where it is
now not what it used to be)
cd /mnt/rh/etc
I think the rescue on rh has pico instead of vi. Try
pico fstab
Pico has the commands right there for you. Change the linux partitions from
the old to the new (like /dev/hda2 becomes /dev/hdc2 or whatever.)
That should do it, because the other procedure would have changed lilo.conf.
Try booting.
Later make a new boot floppy with mkboot. See the man on that.

Do you leave your machine up 24/7? If so, most distributions (Red Hat,
for sure) automatically keep /var/log cleaned up by running a daemon
process (logrotate) every night at around 4AM. If you do not let this
run, your files in there could grow without limit. If you do not
choose to run it then, I suggest you change the time so it runs when
your machine is likely to be on. /var/log/messages is the fastest
growing file on my machine (of the logfiles, that is).

Better:
cd FromDir; find . -depth -print | cpio -pdm ToDir
You want the -depth and -d to create the directories. -m to preserve mod
times.
Change to -pdmv to watch the files scroll by, but it does slow it down
noticably.

Sounds like you need to add the IP address of the windows machine to
/etc/hosts.allow

I know that with Star Office I had to run a second setup program as
an ordinary user, from something like /usr/opt/ then it installs some
stuff to your home directory, and you run it from there.
