Date: Thu, 16 Sep 1999 14:49:57 GMT
I plunked down the thirty-five hard earned bucks and installed Caldera
2.3 on my AMD K6-2 450 system. I was pleasantly surprised that the
installation was VERY smooth. Almost trouble-free. I bought a modem,
sound card and video card that I KNEW were Linux compatible-- and
everything worked as advertised. Setting it up was like falling out of
bed, except for the "boot floppy" that reported that "Linux cannot be
installed on this system." Yeah, right. I booted from the CD and THAT
problem went away. It did bother me a little, though. That particular
problem could really throw a newbie for a loop. Other than that,
though, I was extremely impressed. It was kinda spooky, as the Caldera
setup program actually detected and installed the drivers for my
hardware. Is this plug and play or what? I have an Ensoniq 1371
AudioPCI sound card and TNT2 video card. How did it detect them?
Hmmmm....

I'm also a new linux user. Like you, I utilized xf86config trying to improve on
the resolution and, like you, I received the same "According to
/var/run/gdm.pid, gdm was already running (599) but seems to have been murdered
mysteriously" message. After I saved the file to /etc/X11 I did not reboot,
instead I logged out and attempted to login, this is when the error occurred.
Since then I have reinstalled linux and have created several XF86Config files
however I now reboot rather than logout. I'm curious if this error occurred due
to logging out rather than rebooting.

Nonsense. It depends entirely on what you run.
My main machine at work is a P166 24M Linux machine. It's
quite comfortable though I wouldn't try to run Star Office,
Applix, Gnome, or KDE. But, it works great with fvwm2 as a
window manager. I run X, Netscape, WP8, gcc, DDD, etc. It
swaps a little now and then if I've got two or three memory
hogs running at the same time, but not enough to get annoying.

If you're swapping heavily, more RAM will make a big difference.

The above OSes (AIX, Digital Unix 3.*/4.*, HP/UX, and SOLARIS),
use the System V variant of ps. SunOS, Ultrix, *BSD, and Linux, use the
BSD version of ps. On Digital Unix, DEC uses both versions. ps -ef and
ps aux work, for System V, and BSD, respectfully. For linux, use
ps -aux. that will get you what you're looking for.

You have asked to link with the library /usr/include/X11, but that is not
a library.

The "-I" flag is used to tell the compiler (not the linker) where to look
for #include files.
You probably want to link with flags something like "-L/usr/X11R6/lib
-lX11", which means "look for libraries in /usr/X11R6/lib; link with
libX11.so or libX11.a".

least has some form of memory protection, and I have a hard time
believing MacOS is more stable.

there is a hard-RT version of Linux, which AFAIK requires some special work
to use, and is not based on a modern version (eg 2.3) of "real" Linux.
I haven't used it, and am not trying to run it down. why? because
normal, mainstream Linux works GREAT as a soft RT system. I have numerous
programs which do direct port access to fiddle with video retraces,
serial/parallel/speaker/game ports, etc. they all run with the realtime
scheduling class, and thus are not preempted. they use the timestamp
register to obtain microsecond-level timing. I don't even bother to
down their eth0 interface, since the occasional interrupt doesn't cause
significant jitter (which I would probably count as 100 us, since my
application is dealing with slow, electrochemical humans...)

I think there's some other icon you need to click on in exceed.
It will come up with a small dialog box listing hosts "willing to
manage".
Your linux box should be in that list.
Click on it and your xdm/gdm program should display on your windows
screen.

For the most part this will work.
There can sometimes be slight differences in the tar format, based on
different versions of tar. To eliminate this possibility, you can
take the source code for the tar that comes with Linux and install it
on your Solaris machine.
There can also be slight differences in the capabilities of the
underlying filesystem. For example, if you create a tar file on a
system that permits filenames to be 200 characters long, and unpack it
on a system that only permits filenames to be 20 characters long, you
could run into trouble. This shouldn't be an issue between Solaris
and Linux though.

K6 up to 233 MHz used 0.35um technology and used to heat much. I had one of these. I
now
use a K6-2 350 MHz and have no problems at all: 0.25 um technology.
I have to say that I use a CPU cooler program that sends a 'halt' command when it has
nothing to do, because it is not include in Win9x (it is in NT). I dunno if linux
includes such SW coolers though.

I've posted to this group before about how my Redhat 6.0 system
goes down every few days with dire error messages (like "Aiee ! system panic...).
I ran diagnostics on my machine and it passed all tests. At the same time,
our departmental Sun systems (Ultrasparc servers) slow down to a crawl --- and it
turned out that some hackers are attacking our systems with pings and
telnets (a packet sniffer disclosed that our high-speed network is
completely saturated by pings, ftp's and telnets from a few sources.
The question is: how do I prevent these attacks from crashing my Linux system?
(Disconnecting from the network is not an option...). They slow down Solaris
systems (during the attack itself) but don't kill them off. Our system adminstrator
said that the Linux kernel is full of race conditions that cause it to crash under
these circumstances...
Is there some way to reconfigure my system to make it less vulnerable?

<pre>I've posted to this group before about how my Redhat 6.0 system</pre>
<pre>goes down every few days with dire error messages (like "Aiee ! system
panic...).</pre>
<pre>I ran diagnostics on my machine and it passed all tests. At the same time,</pre>
<pre>our departmental Sun systems (Ultrasparc servers) slow down to a crawl --- and
it</pre>
<pre>turned out that some hackers are attacking our systems with pings and</pre>
<pre>telnets (a packet sniffer disclosed that our high-speed network is</pre>
<pre>completely saturated by pings, ftp's and telnets from a few sources.</pre>
<pre></pre>
<pre>The question is: how do I prevent these attacks from crashing my Linux
system?</pre>
<pre>(Disconnecting from the network is not an option...). They slow down Solaris</pre>
<pre>systems (during the attack itself) but don't kill them off. Our system
adminstrator</pre>
<pre>said that the Linux kernel is full of race conditions that cause it to crash
under these circumstances...</pre>
<pre></pre>
<pre>Is there some way to reconfigure my system to make it less vulnerable?</pre>
<pre></pre>

For an insight on the relationship between the command line interface
and human creativity from someone who has more than a little knowledge
of both, please go read "In the beginning was the command line" by
Neal Stephenson. http://www.cryptonomicon.com/beginning.html
