The problem is that my computer can't find my hard drive. I know nothing is wrong
with my harddrive. This started happening when I made a partition for linux. When I
enter "format c:" in the dos prompt, I get an error message stating "invalid drive."
Is there anyway I can get my computer to reckonize my hard drive again? Don't worry,
I'm not going to install linux again on that computer. I am going to install windows
98.
I would really appreciate your help,

Thanks,

Delete all the partitions if you haven't done so. Then you need to
create a primary partition. Reboot and you'll have a C: drive that
you can format. Not having a C: drive has nothing to do with the
system not recognizing the drive. It just means you don't have a
partition that DOS/Windows recognizes.

Use a boot disk with DOS/Windows fdisk on it.

fdisk /mbr

Before you removed Linux, you could've done "lilo -u" and saved
yourself the trouble.

If you are talking about Automatic Power Management, it exists in the
kernel provided you compile in the support. I think that may be for
portable computers though.

I seem to be talking to myself a lot :-)

After going through the ALSA How-To, it seems that while the ES1879 is
supported, the support is poor. I don't understand why. Nor do I any
longer care. I found the magic incantations for make xconfig to
compile support into the kernel. I decided to screw the module method
and just put it in there.

Sound now works. I haven't tested MIDI or duplexity yet.

A newer term PPPoe would be VPN or Virtual Private Network that uses an
NAS or Network Access Server to control multiple PPP sessions. This is
a somewhat over simplified description but one that will serve for the
moment.

To me it means that the little kbiff, kppp, and kpilot apps dock into

Fredrik,
more information needed!
(i don't clearly understand, what means "erased windows98")
Possible causes after installing linux:
--mbr was rewritten
try to boot your computer with windows bootable diskette,
        type
        c:
        dir /w
if you see your disk - all is OK
you can fix this problem by typing:
        fdisk /mbr
        sys a: c:
then reboot your system to get back to windows
(you must reinstall linux later properly!!!)

Date: Fri, 16 Jun 2000 21:32:10 GMT

When I double-click a .zip file using gnome file manager that was created
with Windows WinZip, the file manager "goes into" the file, but nothing
shows up. Much like if it were an unmounted file system.

Why is this? Is there a way around it? The gnome file manager must be
aware of .zip type files because it displays them with their own icon. I
can't find anything in the mime types or elsewhere to help me out.

Please respond via e-mail if possible. Thank you very much.

mmm..
20GB - FAT32
10GB - Linux EXT2
In this case your linux system will see all your disks (read and write)
Your Win98 and Win2k will share fat32 disk with no problems
(if you want, you can also split 20GB into smaller logical disks)
You should install
Windows98 onto the first 20GB disk
Linux onto the second 10GB disk (Lilo->MBR)
Windows2000 onto the first disk
Result
at boot time you should have
LILO:
(configure lilo to load windows on dev/hda1)
after typing windows you should have windows2000
boot manager (choosing win98 or win2k)

I believe there are NT rescue disks on the web with
Linux kernels designed to mount the NT partition and
edit the registry so you can get in if you forgot the
admin password. You might be able to adapt one for
your purpose.

Just an idea.

I think cron keeps each user's crontab in memory. Why else must you
use crontab -e to change it?

There are other services that hit the disk also. Updated/kflush is
one of them ( It synchronizes the cache with the physical files ). It
runs every few minutes according to a setting that was made during
boot up. You can find it in your boot scripts and lengthen that time
if you are comfortable with your UPS.

My laptop's disk will spool down eventually. I have it set to spool
down after 30 minutes of no access. I'll admit it deoesn't stay down
for long. But if it shut down every thirty seconds, then the machine
would be too damn slow :-(.

A little fine tuning, and you can minimize disk access for a machine
that is not being used.

As root: rpm -ivh file.name.rpm

If it's a rpm, you use rpm -ivh (to install--rpm -Uvh to upgrade). If it's
something that came in a tarball, you need to read the README or INSTALL
file that is typically in the tarball itself.

You could take a look at linuxconf. It has seperate menu sections
for managing POP users, and you can set up user accounts in linuxconf
that only have access to those settings.

Here at work we are currently using a Novell box as our fileserver. We
are considering moving over to Linux as most of our servers are Linux
based now.

We do have a concern however using Linux as a fileserver however:
Novell gives you the option of recovering a deleted file, if you
accidentaly destroyed an important file. (It also gives you a "purge"
option that lets you truly destroy the file.)

How would linux work in this environment? I know Linux can make an
excellent fileserver, but what happens if a file is deleted? AFAIK the
ext2fs does not take kindly to the restoration of deleted files. Any
solutions to this? Would a SAMBA based fileserver have a "undelete"
option? (all our clients are unfortunatly MS based.)

Thanks.
