Does anyone know of a site where I can find an ISO image of Debian 1.3
or 1.3.1 (bo)? I have no trouble finding the distributions themselves,
but can't seem to locate an ISO image. I'm trying to install a lean
and mean distro on a dinosaur laptop. Thanks in advance.

First make a backup of your existing, working XF86config file.
cp /etc/X11/XF86Config /etc/X11/XF86Config.original
To create a new XF86Config file and change your screen resolution and color
depth you can use the Xconfigurator program. You can start Xconfigurator
directly using command /usr/X11R6/bin/Xconfigurator or you can access it
from the setuptool package using command /usr/sbin/setup.
Hope this helps,
Chip

I still don't like Netscape's screen design or interface. Mostly I use
Knode, which is almost a clone of Outlook Express, but faster and less buggy
for simple tasks. Outlook Express is still probably the best balance
between features and ease of use, but it can be slow and buggy. I don't
need all of OE's features, so I prefer Knode.
Pan is a clone of Agent. It's OK, but I find the interface (of either one)
kind of byzantine.
If you like console programs, slrn is really good.

I had something similiar when I first did a compile.
I was (if I remember rightly) running the reiserfs and (daftly) didn't patch
the kernel to allow reiser, therefore the kernel didn't understand the disk
format and panicked!
Are you running ext3/reiser? If not and at the risk of sounding like a stuck
up prat, did you remove the ext2 filesystem entry or change it to a module?
That's all I can think of, I've not known lilo to cause a kernel problem like
that (though that's not to mean it cannot :)

Mozilla is indeed better than Netscape (even though it's officially
unfinished), but I still don't like it as much as the others. The screen
design and interface isn't as good.
Unfortunately, there's a lot of mindless boosterism going on in the Linux
community, with little rigor applied to how good the products really are.

that some use of rdate is what I want. Could someone tell me what

Perhaps crond did not get started when the machine rebooted, did you look
for that?
Check the processes running on the machine, "ps ax | grep cron".
To start crond do as root, "/etc/rc.d/init.d/cron start". This or
something similar should work on RH5.x.
Then add crond to your list of services that get started by default during
system bootup.
If that's not it I would probably use rpm to verify the cron package, and
possibly reinstall cron if it has been corrupted.
Hope this helps,

Here is the spot :
I have Mandrake 7.1, with 2.2.17.
I just compiled 2.2.18, because I needed USB support.
I had mentionned the french keytable within the compile process, but
when I launched the kernel, I had lost my french characters (you now,
those with the "accents").
When I type under a console, I get some weird character like a greek
letter or else, but not the proper one.
And under KDE, everything that had an accent in it is now cut before the
incriminated letter !
The problem is : when booting 2.2.17, I have now the same Pb.
What should I look for ?

You need to edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config(-4) files depending on which X
server you are using (3.3.x or 4.0.x). ATI's tend to not like to be the
secondary display. You may have to go into your BIOS and set the BIOS
to initiallize the ATI first. If the built in adapter is AGP and you
are adding in a AGP ATI card, then they both can't be used together. In
this case the bios should disable the onboard one.

Another thought occurs... What's your machine name?
If localhost.localdomain, your upstream provider might not accept
that in a message number... though come to think of it, leafnode
should only assign a message number if your newsreader doesn't...
I don't know about Netscape 4.x, but NS 3.x assigns a message ID
based on what you're using as an e-mail address. Look at the
headers of this message, for instance.
Post a message to leafnode, then examine the headers. The
outgoing message will be in /var/spool/news/out.going. Then
examine the headers from the messages you've posted which *have*
made it through. That should provide a clue.

and more than that, slrn uses *scoring* which is just *much* more
powerful than simple killing.
scores can be positive or negative. this lets you boost
postings/threads. say you find a certain person especially
illuminating, boost him. want to find responses to your own postings?
you can score on just about any header. scores are cumulative, thus
you can let them constructively add, or fight it out.

(Someone told me to put this in. I no longer recall why.
In /etc/services, make sure the following lines are not commented out:

ON THE CLIENT, have cron run something like this from time to time:
#!/bin/bash

You will not need all of that once it is running. I.e., use the
