RPM files are a convenient way of distributing, installing, managing,
uninstalling, updating etc applications.
There are many file browsers available which often can be made to look
like anything you like -- even Winblows Exploder! (eg kfm with tree view
enabled)

Really? The "de facto" standard is still the command line,

Hi,

Is there anybody has got this problem ?

1- I write a session in a cdrom with cdrecord (cdrom still open)
2- I mount the cd and i see the session OK
3- I umount the cd
4- I write another session into cdrom (cdrom still open)
5- I mount the cd and i don't see the new session, only the first one...

i must open the tray an close the tray to see the new session.
I guess the TOC is not refreshed after first session, is there a way to
see the new session without open the tray ?

With a 2.0.36 kernel it work fine, but now with the new 2.2.13 kernel, i
have this problem.

my Linux Box contains :

Linux 2.2.13 RedHat 5.2
Adaptec SCSI Card 2904
Yamaha 8424 cdrecorder

Thanks a lot for your help.

I've been compiling the sources for all my Gnome installation.

I think the help files need to be made with SGML tools.

I've tried compiling SGML tools but I get lots of errors
both with the LaTeX and the source code.

Does anyone have any information about this?

How do I do that?

AuthGrouopFile /dev/null

CDE is horrible. dtwm is IME flaky compared to Afterstep, Window Maker
and IceWM (the window managers I flick between when I fancy a change).
There is info in the Window Maker docs on how to get a different window
manager within the CDE environment. So yes it is possible to have X and
your WM of choice but you may need to install gcc and various libs
before you can compile and install it.

Date: Fri, 03 Mar 2000 13:40:09 GMT

I will soon be setting up a couple of Linux systems with faily complex
partitioning schemes. Naturally, I thought of PowerQuest's
PartitionMagic (PM), which I've never used but which is highly
regarded.

I know that PM supports the ext2 filesystem, but PowerQuest's Web site
also says that the software is shipped on a "Win32 CD". How does one
use PM on an all-Linux, no Win32 system? Do/can you run it from a
DOS-formatted boot diskette?

Any advice on using PM on an all-Linux system would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Steve,

The PM product only runs in windows 95/98/NT. It's nice if you have a system
with both Win and Linux but in your case you'll need to have a disk with win on
it in order to do the partitioning/resizing work that PM will let you do.

Not much. There is some hit for maintaining the journal, but it's pretty
small. Of course, most comparisons don't make it clear where disk access
time differences come from -- the journal or some other filesystem
feature.

> Is the look and feel similiar to a conventional ext2fs?

It can be. NTFS is a journaling filesystem that doesn't implement many of
the ext2fs features. Something like ext3fs, Reiserfs, or XFS does
implement those UNIX-ish features.

> What kind of considerations are there for HD/controller type - SCSI/IDE?

It doesn't make any difference, at least as far as basic compatibility
goes. Of course, you've got the usual SCSI/EIDE issues at work.

PM 3.0 and earlier could identify ext2fs partitions, but not create,
resize, or otherwise manipulate them. PM 4.0 added the ability to create,
resize, move, and perform a few other operations on ext2fs partitions. PM
5.0 retains that ability.

As to "that is all," even PM 1.0 included support for OS/2's HPFS -- in
fact, the program BEGAN as an OS/2 program.

Yes, there's a DOS version of the program available. If you get a retail
package, there's a DOS disk image file (actually two or three files) you
can use to create disk images for use in situations like yours. Don't buy
through the web and download the CD image file, though; that lacks the
DOS image files for some reason, or did when I bought my upgrade that
way. The DOS version is lacking in some bells & whistles (like the
wizards), but it includes all the core functionality, including ext2fs
support.

There's also an old GUI called MGR that you can find lurking
on Susite^WMetalab, unmaintained as far as I know.
