The current versions of Slackware or Debian will best fit your needs from
among the full distros. Depending on the 486's resources
you'll have to pick and choose among the packages,
particularly wih regard to streamlining X.

Mini-distros like Peanut will do also, of course.

I found mine in the telephone directory. I found a whole lot,
actually, and talked with friends to see which one was best and why.
They are not free. I found that using a local ISP (rather than AT&T,
Verizon, etc.) was better because I get better service.

At some point, you should consider getting an Ultra-2 SCSI (or better)
controller and make the upgrade to SCSI devices. It will also go a
long way in dealing with the problem of an insufficient number of IRQs
in the PC architecture.

Another possibility is to hook up stuff to the USB if you have one and
if your devices are compatible with it.

I have VA Linux Systems' version of Red Hat Linux 6.2. The following
are installed on my machine, but I do not recall if I had to install
them myself from the CD-ROM, or whether they install automatically
with the rest of the system.

valinux:jdbeyer[~]$ rpm -qa | grep zip
bzip2-0.9.5d-2
gzip-1.2.4a-2
valinux:jdbeyer[~]$

Thanks for all the answers, (x)netload is exactly what I was looking for, I
needed a console app, maybe I should have told you so, but netload is just
what I wanted: small, displays only the necessary, nice ncurses-look,
thanks again.

I run Red Hat 6.2 and similar distributions. Their printer tool,
accessable from the "control-panel" program, allows you to set:
-dDepletion=2
as a "Extra GS options". It still puts down more ink than the machine
would using Windows 95 with EconoSave (or whatever it is called), and
does not print quite as nicely. Photographs are noticably inferior to
the Windows driver.

Any comments/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

has anybody experience installing the Tekram dc395UW driver into the
standard kernel? Im using 2.4.3 and downloaded the driver source form
Tekram directly. I followed the instructions and edited
drivers/scsi/Makefile and drivers/scsi/Config.in. The readme says to
edit hosts.c too. But I could not found the proposed position to
insert the patch text.
make menuconfig worked. Also the compilation showed no errors (or
least didnt exit with error).
I rebooted my system but no boot message hints to an existing SCSI
Controller and 'cat /proc/scsi/scsi' said: 'Attached devices: none'.

How to reasure that the drivers been compiled in?

Thank you,

Tobias

you can control your mouse under X with programs 'xset' and 'xpointer';
please read the respective manpages. To automate this, put the right
commands in one of your xinit scripts.

HP's new Linux-based printing initiative for Linux. Check it out:

http://hp.sourceforge.net/

Now they have released enough of their specs to do printer drivers. But if
I wanted good laser quality, I would go with one of the new models from
Lexmark. Lexmark used to release good OS/2 drivers and now is releasing
Linux printing drivers.

As far as printing with HP's, I would have to mildly disagree. I use a
HP8000n at work which has quite good Postscript printing capabilities. We
throw a few thousand print jobs primarily from linux boxes each day at it.
Works pretty well.

As far as deskjet printing goes, check out the sourceforge link.

That is not enough,
HP Support does not know much about this,
the Linux Drivers are not delivered on the Driver CDs,
The delivered documentation does not mention this,

... what a MS slaved junk Copmpany

No Price bonus for Linux users, which are forced to spent much
time to get the driveers from the Net ... no ay for the many hours to

It seems like, when I've got X loaded, that something seems to constantly
write to the disk and I have no idea what it could be. Frankly, it seems
to be more like a static 'vrrr' than a writeprocess. Noise intensifies
when I move the mouse, for example. This also was the case under the rh7.1
installation., and doesnt seem to happen under bash/non-X or w2k. Anything
will be greatly appreciated.

Yeah. But how to remap ? Maybe it is possible just to manage it for an X

OK, I have a problem with a machine which likes to remember the year as 1994
when I turn it on. I am looking for a way to automate the change from 94 to
2001.

So far I have a script looking a bit like this:

date > /tmp/olddate
sed s/"1994"/"2001"/ /tmp/olddate > /tmp/today

now, that works fine, but how can I get it back into the date command?

I have tried

date -s < /tmp/today

and

sed s/"1994"/"2001"/ /tmp/olddate | date -s (instead of the above one)

but neither work. Date just complains about a lack of arguments. How can I
get date to read the date from the stdin so I can use "<" or pipe the date
into it?

Thanks

Yeah. Just bought a LinkSys NIC. Big Penguin on the box, and a TurboLinux CD
inside. A booklet and glossy docs for three or flavors of Windows. And
somewhere around page 60, a note that it will work on Linux, but is
completely unsupported. That little MS flag means it will work on Windows;
that little Tux means they're trying to climb on the bandwagon for free.

Is this coming from your speakers or is the hard disk light on? Try
rerouting the speaker wires away from the monitor if the former. If the
latter, run free to check how much memory you have available. You may
be using swap, though I doubt it on modern machines.

Haven't tested it, but try:

date -s "`date | sed s/1994/2001/`"

The single quotes are back ticks, found above the TAB key.

BTW, I think there is a fix for broken BIOSes out there, search
Google.com for it.

Yes, wireless is a lot more expensive than a wired LAN. There doesn't
seem to be any way around that.

802.11 wireless cards are going for around US $139, plus $69 for the PCI
adapter for a desktop PC. Most of those work with Linux even though
only a few companies make note of this. You can use them in ad-hoc
mode without an access point, but OTOH you can get an access point from
LinkSys for $269 that also has an Internet firewall built in.

Proxim "Symphony" wireless cards are slightly less expensive and also
work with Linux, but are slower. They don't need an access point (I
have three PC's networked this way).

Not sure if this is of use to you, but it's possible to make the date
command add or subtract a prescribed amount of time.

 date --date='7 years' would give the correct date on your box.

Not sure if you can put that data back into the date command, but it
saves you having to invoke sed via script.

Aliasing date to the above may be a possibility.

We are Micro$oft. Unix is irrelevant. Openness is futile.

They compile for everyone else! Are you using pristine sources, or
a distro patched version?

> In file included from lm78.c:13:
> /usr/src/linux/include/linux/kernel.h:71: parse error before `int'

Yes ... apparently your compilation does not understand the word
"asmlinkage"! Which "compiler" is it? Please compile with -v in the
compiler flags, and look at what heppens.

   71: asmlinkage int printk(const char * fmt, ...)

As far as I can see, asmlinkage is defined in linkage.h, so please
check if it is correctly included. If it isn't, then you'll have to
investigate. If it is, then you'll also have to investigate:

  #if defined __i386__
  #define asmlinkage CPP_ASMLINKAGE __attribute__((regparm(0)))
  #elif defined __ia64__
  #define asmlinkage CPP_ASMLINKAGE __attribute__((syscall_linkage))
  #else
  #define asmlinkage CPP_ASMLINKAGE
  #endif

it might simply see that you have some missing files, or corrupted ones.
Try compiling without MODVERSIONS also.

Peter
